Crash course on HvH engineering: WALLS!

So you have become a UPP/CLF/Marine engineer on HvH. What now?

First off, you want to go to the equipment vendor and grab the extra mats. If you want to go to REAL engineer gaming then buy more mats from the vendor. Take a flamer sentry.

HvH engineering differs from HvX engineering. Since a few bullets can make you immobile and cases only block a PERCENTAGE of bullets, barricades are less important

Not only that, but a single well-placed nade can very easily destroy them!

So what do we build instead of cades?

    Walls

Walls not only block 100% of bullets, but are also reasonably tough and block view

Think I am crazy? let me explain

This is your typical HvX cade layout Looks decent right?

Unfortunately, it does not hold up. Each red line is a firing angle.

They can shoot the entire cadeline up. Only a fraction of those bullets may go through, but you only need a couple to get downed and die.

Furthermore, within the box, is where they can throw nades. A single grenade placed at the center of that box can effectively wipe out the cadeline and anyone standing next to it.

Additionally, since the view is unobstructed, they can blindfire the cadeline. Sure they will hit less bullets and waste ammo, but like I said before , it only takes a couple bullets to kill.
Offscreen fire is the number 1 killer in HvH. To add insult to injury, in this situation you don't know where they are without sights or binos. Meaning they THEY have the advantage and you don't!

And lastly, the sentry is pretty much wide open. Sure it can help kill one or two idiots that can charge up to them, but the others can quickly identify where it is and shoot it from offscreen.
Not to mention that it will also get quickly destroyed to grenades

    Now let's look at this:

    Screenshot_414.jpg

The red lines represent hostile firing angles and the green lines represent sentry firing angles. The box is where hostiles can throw nades and the black box is where another cade should be.

    In this layout:
    • Only two angles initially exist to enter and shoot from, which are both covered by a flamer sentry
    • Hostiles will have to leap over the sandcade at the very top, which exposes them to the flame sentry and have to leap over again, potentially getting shot again, to resist safely.
    • An extremely deadly sentry "death hall" is at the south.
    • View is restricted to the range of the sentries by walls. C4 has to be used in order to breach the northern wall.
    • Hostiles cannot SEE the flame sentry and anticipate it. The ones in the kill corridor are hard to spot aswell, meaning in order to notice them, they'll have to find out the HARD way
    • If a cade is placed at the black box, grenades will bounce from it, forcing them to C4 the wall.

At a glance, these defenses pretty much require fire support or atleast 2 C4 to breach. Both of which are valuable resources.

Don't walls take a long time to build?

Here is the silver lining, both UPP and CLF combat engies have CONSTRUCTION 3, meaning that they can build walls in less than a minute, making them actually viable.

With this in mind, your priorities as UPP/CLF engie should be

    1. Creating walls to cut up sightlines. Offscreen fire is the number 1 killer in HvH.
    2. Creating short ranged kill boxes. They should not be able to shoot from outside your view. 1x1 "death" halls with your sentry(s) at least 2 tiles to the side of the walkable area with grenade protection for extra points
    3. Actual cadelines for access control and nade protection
    4. Additional obstructions to block nades\be a nuisance, ideally in positions that force you to be in view of a sentry and force you to leap over to get out of it.

    Here are some additional tips
    • Cades do not really need barbed wire if they aren't frontline facing or if you don't care about people leaping over them.
    • Handrails, wood cades and flipped tables are cheap obstructions that not only force people to leap over, but encourage it as it isn't worth the time to destroy
    • The more walls blocking sightlines, the more enemies have to waste C4 to expand their sightlines, and the less C4 they have to destroy sentry death halls. Same goes with CAS and firesupport.
    • Grenades should be fully expected. Use explosive upgrades liberally, but not too much as to comprimise your ability to make more walls
    • Capture enemy sentries by deploying them and multitooling them!
    • Use flares before a killbox/death hall to create a false sense of security. Make them trust your enviorment, and they will be more likely to trust your traps.
    • Masterkeys can easily be countered by wrenching down vendors in front of your walls

Lastly, the most IMPORTANT rule is to:

    SEND THIS TO YOUR COMRADES!

One guy making cheeky death halls and kill corridors can create a couple strongpoints before marines come, however MULTIPLE comrades doing this can achieve battlefield supremacy through countless strongpoints. More kill corridors, more mortars/c4/CAS used to clear them, and less of that for the real threat, the sentry death halls

Very good strat, Walls always have a place in CM! Also good thing mentions about sightlines, Also for the last image you can use an extra layer of sandbags to slow people down even more.

Greetings.I am an engineer Artem Cherny (Yes, yes, the one who is an engineer / survivor and builds a lot of walls.)
I advise you to supplement the guide with mines and window openings. This addition to the barricades of walls will make you a war hero (which, as usual, will be forgotten to mention).
