To simplify things a lot from the viewpoint of a player and a a staff.
Alpha. Newbies and people who enjoy newbies. No trouble makers but unreliable fodder.
Bravo. Fob.
Charlie. Rp gang thats usually the most reliable.
Delta. Unga bunga go kill.

Pretty spot on with your descriptions.
What role do you normally play? I prefer delta but I've been mixing up squads more, and I mix up who I overwatch as SO. Overall I'd say test them all out and make some battle buddies, it makes the game a lot more enjoyable and will help you live longer. In general:
Alpha-Mostly new people, but they will follow the SL around like a puppy. Will follow orders but generally have no initiative without command.
Bravo-Best squad for starters imo. Usually get fob duty so you can figure out the basics of engi, medic, pfc, SG, and SL. Good mix of vets and newer players, good banter.
Charlie-Very reliable with a lot of good vets. Great banter and self sufficient squad. Fun rivalry with Delta makes it more enjoyable too.
Delta-The wildcard squad. Has the most dangerous vanguard potential and can end rounds in 40 minutes or less....or get wiped in 10 minutes. Lots of retards (myself included) but self sufficient to the point of ignoring orders to win.
Goosen Dagen-casual marine
Alpha: Will follow you without question, but will also slug shot you in the back
Bravo: Ol' Reliable work horses of the USCM, no flash all class.
Charlie: Usually has the best banter and good support classes (Engies and Medics)
Delta: Robust PFCs who won't listen to you unless you really know what you're talking about.
Delta ungas best ungas
