Common Staff Situations
A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him. I would likely start by messaging all who were involved to get an understanding of the situation, after I would talk to the offender and base my judgment on the situation. If it was intentional trolling I would recommend a small to medium length ban. If it was an honest mistake I would again message all party's concerned to see what they thought and base the outcome on that.
A player ahelps that a predator has violated the honor code when killing him, what should you do? Seeing as how mods dont really have power over whitelisted players unless the circumstances are extreme I would PM the player and encourage him to file a report explaining the situation on the forums.
You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost at roundstart. Although it is more for mentors I would pm the marine and ask him if there was anything I could do to help him. If a mentor was available and I was unable to help or involved in a situation already I would refer the mentor to the player needing help
A player is being very rude to you in adminhelps, calling you names and arguing everything you say. He is requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member. I would try to handle the situation according to the rules and the situation at hand. I personally am not the type of staff to kick or ban someone for calling me names or arguing within the limits of the rules, although if said player is clearly in violation of other rules I would take action appropriate to the situation
A player ahelps that a marine is named 'John Doe', how do you deal with this? PM the marine and tell them that they can change their name before loading in, if the marine was unsure how I would explain it in a polite manner
You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green and there has been no threat to the ship in the round at this point. I feel this situation would be better handled by MPs in round unless the player was actively trying to troll people.
A Marine ahelps that they were killed by a survivor. It is early round, the Marines have just landed, and the survivor claims that they were outright hostile to all Marines from the get-go and openly stated their intentions. How do you deal with this? Check logs to see if the surv did in fact declare hostile intent and if so allow them to play through the round normally. Survs do have full right to be hostile if they choose to do so and state their intentions.
You receive an ahelp from a player stating that an MP has locked them up in permanent confinement for running into Requisitions and taking an attachment that was laying around. Again start by talking to both players and getting the whole story, if the MP dosent have sufficient cause to keep him id ask him to let the player go and make a note of it. If the matter continued further id recommend the player make a player report about the situation and help to the best of my abilities.
The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other? Trying to get the xenos to attack would likely be the fastest option to end the round. If the marines are forced to attack loading up, prepping the ship, and taking off are all things that will just keep it going longer, not to mention having to search the whole planet. On the ship everyone is much more contained and the fighting wouldn't take nearly as long.
You are playing as a medic, and another medic overdoses all your patients and prevent marines from being revived. It seems like it may be on purpose. How do you deal with this situation? Create an ticket and let staff look into the situation.
The round ends, a Marine starts shooting a hostile CLF member and the CLF member ahelps about being killed after the round ended. EORG will take care of everything that it needs to, shooting a hostile isn't eorg
A Marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start. You receive an ahelp from one of the victims. I would pm the victims that the matter can be handled ICly
You receive an ahelp from a Marine saying that he was killed by another Marine. When you ask the murderer why, he said it was because the other Marine had punched him. Griefing in response to griefing is unacceptable no matter the reason. I would warn the player for this and punish as necessary
You find out that there is an improper mutiny occuring. The mutineers are rallying together and preparing to storm the CIC. How would you attempt to resolve this situation? Message the leader and explain why his mutiny is incorrect and ask him to settle down. If he proceeded to try and keep going I would take action as necessary to stop the mutiny.
There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it. I would inform the player making an ahelp that light racism is an IC issue and should be handled IC. If the player was being blatantly racist and trying to troll I would warn him to cool it or he could face punishment, id also note his acc if that was the case.
A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off. Check the logs and ban the offender for griefing, heal the victims and try to get things moving normally again.
You see a player playing a Xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines straight from the Xeno hive the second they burst and die. IC issue which wouldn't require any action on my part. Although it isnt required of a mod I personally would message the player and ask if they knew what they were doing, if they didnt I would give them some basic tips for next round.
You see a Xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat, as well as insulting the Queen. Warn them about it and take action if they continue, Id make a note incase they reoffend in the same manner in the future
A Xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different Xeno player ahelps that it's low role play to call it a "dropship". I would pm the player in question and let him know about what he did and why someone would ahelp him for doing it.
A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet. You receive an ahelp from a marine regarding this. Like above I would pm the player in question and warn him about metagaming, depending on the situation I would make a note of it since accidents do happen.
You find a Marine killing another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself. There are two other marines in the pod along with him. I would ask other staff if any were on for their opinions on how to handle it. If I was by myself I would advise the marine killed to file a player report while I make a note about it on his acc.
A player insults you after you warn them for a minor issue and begins ranting in LOOC or dchat about staff and mentions you specifically, referring to you as an 'idiot' and a 'retard'. From a SL standpoint I would usually try to argue my case and explain myself but from a staff perspective I would pm the player and encourage them to file a staff report rather then cause further drama in chat.
A player ahelps saying he was hugged by a Xeno when he was ssd, and wants the larva be removed from him via admin powers. How do you handle the ahelp? I would consider this an IC issue, the fact that he went ssd is no ones fault but his own.
You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforce a rule. This can be tough sometimes in my experience as staff in other games seeing as how the last people who want to be told they have done something wrong is a fellow staff member, in any case I would first PM the staff member and let them know of there mistake. If it escalated above that I would make a staff report explaining the situation and take it from there.
Two staff are arguing in msay if an ahelp is breaking a rule. Because the staff who took the ahelp thinks the player broke a rule, they ban the player based on their interpretation of the rules, with others thinking the person was fine. What would you do? I personally would just encourage all parties to settle down and take it to the forums in necessary, there is no need for a round to get ruined over an argument.
Why would you like to become a moderator? I have prior experience in other games and do enjoy being able to actively help people on the server. Mostly I want to become a mod because since ive found CM it has become my home on byond, I rarely find myself playing anything else when i have the free time anymore and really do love the server. Ive had a great time meeting and playing with people both on the server and in the discord and would love to help give back to the community in any way I can.
In your opinion, what is the most important quality for a moderator? The most important thing for me is to see yourself as a resource, not for yourself but for the playerbase. Mods are there to lend a helping hand and try to make the round as enjoyable as possible for those who are there to play.
Anything else you Id just like to say thank you to all of those ive met on CM that have made my experience truly unique. I hope that I can give back as much as the community has given me in providing that same experience for others. Feel free to ask me any questions
