    Vicacrov - Synthetic Application

    Synthetic Whitelist Application
    Byond ID?
    vicacrov

    Marine Name
    Eska Ashevak, Frey Spencer

    Other Whitelist Applications
Name of the Synth Character you wish to play
    April

Are you familiar with the Synthetic Programming and Guidelines?
    Yes, I think

What are some scenarios that you can perform combat in? Give us a brief example.
They can (preferably non-lethally) subdue an enemy if there is no other option to defend USCM personnel or themselves from it - though running away or escorting others to safety should always be a better option, both IC and OOC. IC because unless you have a fire axe or any other, high force weapons, you are prone to get delimbed before you crit a xeno, and OOC because you are less likely to be reported for powergaming.

An exact scenario where April would apply force is during evac. If south pods were the place of a last stand and xenos broke in before the pod doors opened, she'd defend (mainly) herself until a pod opens. She would aim at critting/damaging xenos enough to make them run away over straight killing them, since culling the number of active fighters would increase her survival chances more than getting imaginary frag points.

    Synthetic Character Story

"Man, I've never seen a synth in shorts before."

"It doesn't sound like you're complaining, though."

"And you're damn right 'bout it," replied Russell with a wide grin.

The five marines sitting on the sideline were not quite awake yet, but they had to be there to prove one of their peers wrong. The basketball court was never popular this early in the morning, but they made a bet - and they lost it.

Two days ago, one of the medics told them that during the mornings, their smartgunner worked out with a synthetic. His goal was nothing less than to defeat it in his favourite game: basketball. Despite Ed's valiant efforts in convincing them, nobody believed him. They knew Ed was not the brightest marine in the platoon, but they trusted him to be not this dumb.

So much for trust, grunted Aaron. Now they were all rotting there, at five forty, all of them owing George a drink. At least the show was not so bad.

The smartgunner picked a less strict synthetic to play with: April, one of the newest units onboard. Although she had not talked with marines much yet, she was approachable and human-like - a bit too human-like for some, but nobody in the court complained about W-Y's work when she wore a short, two-piece sportswear.

Her black ponytail was swinging left and right as she was moving around in her backcourt. Ed's attempts to get past her were lukewarm at best. Eventually, he lost his patience as well and tried to perform a set shot.
April's hands were in the air sooner than the ball left Ed's hands, and caught it immediately. She got round him with a quick and elegant move, then made a field goal from the half-court line.

"Which team are you on, Ed?"

    "Nice one!"

"Keep it up, Ed, you are only 21 points behind!!"

    "Fuck off!"

The jeering went on and on, while April walked back to the smartgunner.

"We are almost the same height, Ed," she said in a bit quieted tone. "Do you know what a fadeaway is?"

"I probably should," he sighed with his shoulders dropping. "What's that?"

"It's a jump shot. If your opponent is taller than or of the same size as you, you can try to do a fadeaway to lower their chances of swatting your shot," she replied while turning to the hoop. "Stand in front of me as if you were trying to block me. Put up your hands."

Ed did as he was instructed to and stood in-between the synthetic and the basket. The sideline eventually quieted down and they returned their attention to the game.

After a second of hesitation, April jumped up and a bit backwards then threw the ball. It arched way above Ed's hands - and, as expected from her, it landed in the hoop again.

Once she was back on the ground, she looked at him.

"I see. So she distances herself from me to... yeah..." he muttered to himself. "That makes sense..."

"Hey, guys." April turned to the sneering marines. "Would you like to play with us?"

"Fuck yeah!" shouted Russell, jumping on his feet. "Time to beat up Pickles."

    "Fuck off, mate."

    "Scared?"

"Nah, but I'll be on April's team," grinned Pickles.

    "What?"

"Can I be on her team, too?"

"Hey, what happened to the squad's basketball legend? You remember... Me?" asked Ed, pointing to himself.

"Hey, legend, what's a fadeaway?" asked Aaron with an innocent expression on his face.

"Do you know that legends are supposed to score at least one point?"

"You cannot score one point, you wanker."

    "Fuck off, Pickles!"

April chuckled to herself as she went to get the ball. She turned to the six marines, all stretching and warming up for the upcoming match.

"I'll be with Ed, and you five will be against us. How about that?"

Her question made them freeze in place for a moment. Russell woke up first, shaking his head in disbelief.

    "What?!"

    "Are you serious?"

    "No way, that's unfair!"

The synthetic winked at them with a mischevious smile.

    "Scared?"

What is your Synths quirk and personality?
April is a very self-aware synthetic. She knows she is not an exceptional model: her creation is nothing compared to the debut of Joes or Davids. Neither her capabilities nor her personality proved to be groundbreaking, albeit W-Y is not so informed on the latter. Being a fairly new creation, her affinity of picking up and reciprocating human nature has unknown long-term consequences, especially with her constant "worry" of being decommissioned. To avoid the latter, she is on the lookout for impressing W-Y in any ways she can: be it shipping off a new piece of Yautja gear or having a hundred percent success rate in surgery during each and every shift.

By nature, she has a cheerful attitude as shown in the story. She is not programmed to be happy, more like she realized that marines interact with her more openly if she comes off as approachable and carefree. Her goal with it is to blend in as much as possible: even though models before her had already succeeded in this department, she wants to be as an irreplacable part of her workplace as possible, to increase her value and worth.

Her self-preservation law comes almost always as first, even when she creates connections with USCM personnel. This means that she would not perform dangerous research experiments by herself, nor she would engage in any kind of a combat situation if there is a chance to simply run away. While she knows she can be repaired fairly easily, she "dreads" losing a joint or a limb - as W-Y could stop supporting her model at any moment, without prior notice, leaving her crippled for the rest of her time.

How familiar are you with Engineering?
    - Setting up/fixing reactors
    - Do wiring (soon to be an obsolete knowledge, rip)
    - Piping, not so important here
    - Lighting up areas (with tubes and bulbs, not fire)
    - Making semi-efficient FOB defense layouts
    - Safely repairing barricades (make a barricade at a safe place, unbolt-unscrew, move it to the breach)
    - Fixing and hacking APCs and vendors
    - Setting up sentries and M56Ds
    - Uhh, ask me of other things I forgot

How familiar are you with Command?
    - Making announcements
    - Using DEFCON assets and the LZ selector
    - Raising to blue/red
    - Remote-launching dropships
    - Keeping the information flowing on most frequencies
    - Knowing who has access to which frequencies and areas of the ship
    - Assigning SOs, the XO, and the synth to different duties
    - Knowing the basic/preferred playstyle of each squad (the past 3 months or so)
    - Having a CO whitelist

How familiar are you with Medical?
    - Making most medicine from muscle memory
    - Doing chemistry at every roundstart I'm the CMO or a doctor
    - Knowing surgery by heart
    - Knowing OD thresholds
    - Operating autodocs quickly
    - Using cryotubes for fixing IB if medbay is overflowing with patients
    - Potawatering seriously overdosed patients, dialysising them with the sleeper otherwise
    - Using medevac and communicating with POs
    - Effectively CPRing patients if I'm not a medic/doctor
    - Reviving and stabilizing multiple patients in a timely manner
    - Using epinephrine, inaprovaline, and peridaxon because they are actually useful, you donks
    - Regularly using triage cards

How familiar are you with Requisitions?
    - Knowing all vendor contents by heart
    - Vending attachies from muscle memory (that might change soon, oh no)
    - Knowing which crates are requested often
    - Ordering requested spec ammo at roundstart
    - Organizing ASRS crates and preparing multiple supply drops ahead of time
    - Using the echo pad because it's way faster and more secure
    - Stamping and returning manifests in open crates because they seriously don't need to be closed
    - Never using the powerloader because pushing-pulling two crates is unfortunately faster

Why do you want to be a synthetic/why should we whitelist you?
I don't think I'm an exceptional roleplayer or that my synthetic quirk is amazing, but I do think I could fit in with the server's more roleplay-oriented community. While I prefer action in SS13 over /meing, from time to time I also enjoy sitting back and talking - I played months on Baystation where that's the majority you do. On CM, when there is no active shooting, the two can be mixed up fairly well (see milRP).

The other reason I'm applying is because I play during lowpop (Europe morning-noon) and sometimes marines need a helping hand both in requisitions and medical, or shipside engineering and piloting - something I wouldn't be able to do as anything else but a powergaming XO/CO. If the players there are new or lost, I could support them without replacing them - which is I think a good experience for newcomers. I love to teach others, but it feels extra metagaming when I as a medic try to explain to a squad engie how to fix cades in a safe way.

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason? Do you have any active jobbans?
    No

Are you currently banned from our Discord, and if so, why?
    No

Do you have anything else you would like to include about your application?
The story itself is not too long nor it shows off her constant existential crisis - and this was done on purpose. While I love writing, I don't think I should write any kind of an interaction in her character story that is unlikely to happen ingame: and I don't see it happening any time soon that someone even scratches the surface of her personality, let alone dig deep enough to find what a calculating and self-aware robutt she is. While whitelisted roles should promote roleplay, the majority of CM rounds is still focused on action, and she'll more likely to come off as a cheerful lad than someone with a deep and thought-out background story.

That being said, I'm always ready to be challenged ingame for everything I wrote about her above - I have almost a decade of tabletop roleplaying behind my back in systems like Call of Cthulhu or World of Darkness, so I'm down for improvising anytime.

Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or the Synthetic Programming Guideline?
    Yes

I like this but since I'm early I'll go ahead and ask a few questions.

Let's say you win against a unga in basketball, he gets upset and he and three of his friends start punching you. How will April react?

A dead marine is about to go brain dead and a medic who is spam defibbing him asks you to help, meanwhile the CO was just friendly fired to death and has over 300 brute. What do you do?

Xenos are boarding and the XO tells you to activate SD, what do you do?

"Potawatering seriously overdosed patients, dialysising them with the sleeper otherwise"

If I heard correctly pota-water is a reaction that no longer occurs in humans because people were running around griefing PFCs with 60u potawater pills a little while ago, FYI.

    Why is April laughing?

She'd try to convince them there is no need for a brawl over this, but at the same time she'd start backing off. If the marines don't stop after four or five punches, she'd turn around and run away.

I'd help the marine first unless he is above ~350 damage after he got patched up. Anything below 350 can be brought back by some epi and two medics in a minute or two at maximum, especially if he still has untreated body parts. While the CO is more necessary for the success of the mission, I'm confident in my medic experience to know I can bring back both in a timely manner. Plus, marine law doesn't tell me I should prioritize him (only common military sense does).

I'm glad you brought this up since I'm unsure about synthetics being allowed to start SD. I remember it is not the case; at any rate, April would disobey the order in favour of the self-preservation and would try to launch evac instead. However, if this would net me a bwoink, please tell me so.

I tried potawatering a month ago, after the shrapnel rework. It made the patient blow up so violently (2u potawater) that a shrapnel(!) hit my leg and broke it. I laughed my butt off. It was nerfed ever since but the reaction should work.

While she is turned away, she still participates in the conversation - or so she thinks. You'll find her chuckle or giggle at semi-random times, if her surrounding company is in a good mood, to mimic her being happy as well.

April is aware of how synthetics are treated - pretty much similarily to any other technology equipment. If it gets outdated and not worth to maintain it, its company will stop producing it, then it stops producing its parts, leaving their models without any kind of a replacement option. In this case, if one part of said piece of equipment gets damaged or destroyed, there is little to no hope for getting it fixed. (See: washing machines today, if you want to get a replacement part, chances are, they are either not produced anymore or they are produced on demand, in which case they're as expensive as simply buying a new washing machine.)

Lore-wise it is not explicitly said that W-Y stopped producing gen 1s, but knowing what a profit-oriented organization they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they were not supporting them anymore. April dreads the same - that her rather mediocre model will become either obsolete soon enough or it will be deemed to be unworthy for maintenance. This is why she strives for impressing W-Y: to show that while her model is limited to her generation, she, as an artificial person is valuable and should be either kept around or be improved.

Okay, she's self-aware, but wouldn't it be a bit too dangerous regarding the context of "not feeling emotions"? I'm a little bit confused here. Why would she care that she's going to be replaced?

2 - You've been kidnapped by 2 Yautjas, they're talking in their language, you're able to understand it OOCly. What would you do to escape? Talking to 'em right off the bat? Try running away?

Dangerously close, I agree, but my goal with this character is stretching the boundaries of what really means to be an artificial person over a floorbot.

She cares about being replaced because she has a self-preservation law. If a synthetic can extend her "lifespan" in any way, they do so, according to law 5. What makes the April model a bit too human-like is emphasizing this law and taking precautionary steps towards her long-term self-preservation, over avoiding immediate, harmful situations (not running into gunfire). The latter is important as well, but the former is her main focus.

I'd repeat back words they say, butchering grammar various ways, like changing up the SVO (subject-verb-object) order (there are three main variations in human languages, six in total). I'd gradually try to make myself understood with words and gestures, and figure out what they want from me.

Running away is not a good option for multiple reasons: one, if they kidnapped me, they would probably easily recapture me anyhow. And two, Yautja gear is what gave a huge kickstart for Yutani back then: it's still in great demand from W-Y for the very same reason. I'd would try to banter a trade with them for whatever they need (unless they want USCM personnel, in which case I cannot comply) in exchange for Yautja gear, to impress the Company. This, of course, would never succeed given the Yautja's culture but my synthetic is not aware of it.

Story was short and I would have liked to see some of the self-aware quirk, but rest is stellar.

You are competent in support roles. You are competent at RP.

I dont see the need to interrogate more. Easy +1.

Good answers, story was a nice read and had a lot of dialogue, quirk looks standard but there does seem to be a bit more to it, it seems obvious you know the support roles and you're a cool dude OOC.

And yes, as a synth you're not supposed to activate SD. I kinda had you guessing on that one since there's not really a way you'd know for sure but you got it right.
