M39 is very good from my experience.
L42 turned out to be a big letdown, it's inaccurate and weak enough that you'll routinely waste all of your ammo when trying to shoot targets out in the open without harming anything. IFF capability still makes it retain its usefulness on maps like prison station.
Multi-barreled shotguns are just horrendous to use, avoid like the plague.
Wait till you get sawned-off PB burst on some Ancient Lurker. Dead and gone instantly. MOU is bad, but others are going further on "High risk - High reward"
I want to like the L42, especially since it has IFF. However, I typically find it useful for just harassing targets at long range. For as long as I've used it, I don't think I've gotten but one or two kills with it, and that was with combined fire of other Marines on xenos already downed.
I was really excited when they made the ls compatible with the l42, but it got nerfed shortly after. It used to be a viable and fun weapon with qfa and stock
They should retcon the shotgun to be the "standard issue" weapon of the USCM instead of the pulse rifle since it's way more common.

Holdout pistol mains stand up
Been shotgunning with buckshot since Sulaco and after alll the changes, buffs and nerfs it�s still the best choice for the PFC main.
Followed by the QF + Agrip Rifle with AP.
In terms of general weapons, Shotgun stands heads above the others.
The Shotgun is the standard issue longarm of the Marine corps.
