Can someone explain to me what predators do?

I've encountered predators several times, but they did nothing but stand there and growl and laugh at the marines. What exactly do predators do? I looked on the wiki, but I couldn't find an answer. Can anyone explain their purpose or send me a link that explains them?

I'd recommend watching the Predator movies if you're gonna play a server that has them.
