    It honestly depends.

If your team knows what they're doing (Read: can avoid shooting your team with the MG), M56D.

Otherwise, sentry gun. There's not really an easy way to fuck up setting up the sentry, and you just set it up and forget it. A bad M56D can *ruin* a push/defense.
Usually playing as Darwin 'D.J.' Jefferson, PFC (Private: Flare Carrier), or Smartgunner almost always out of ammo. Occasionally an RO who yearns for death, dealing with rampant jackassery of his coworkers.
Against my better judgement I decided to start making Youtube videos involving Colonial Marines. Channel

I am a strong believer in Comrade Sentry. A well placed comrade can buy marines time to fall back and reposition. I'll take the MG if I'm going to the front and know a few people on my squad know how to use it. Usually it's sentry for me though.

As it stands, comrade sentry has contracted a bug that makes him unreliable at random (usually vital) times and will not fire at targets well within range.

If that bug was to be fixed, he would have the advantage over the MG, especially with the radius adjustment. But with that bug, you would be better off using the metal in that crate to build Cades than assemble the hunk of junk.

I'd rather have the cold, emotionless, killing capacity of a sentry than the cold, emotionless, killing capacity of a player.

M56D, it's far more useful. Easier to transport, easier to set up on front lines, can kill an Empress in 3 Bursts.

The issue is It's not made for (most) FOBs due to their designs and the chance of marine FF.

If you have a marine dedicated to manning an M56D on the front lines, with an escort marine and a sandbag marine, you've got an instant win.

    This.

Its damage output is second to none, its a mobile barricade on its own so you can put it on a 1x1 or 2x2 choke reliably, has burst fire, and needs no battery. Plus its setup is faster and the gun is easier to transport than a turret.

And with the sentry gun breaking and admins not fixing it unless they are feeling generous (no, turning the turret ON and OFF does NOT fix it, stop spamming that in OOC, admins) id say the smartgun nest beats it by miles.

While it is sad to see that (as of current) the sentry is having issues, in a situation where the Sentry had the kinks worked out, I'd go to it over the M56D, at least when it comes to defending an area.

See, the M56D is nice and all, but the one fatal flaw it has it not the fact that it lacks smart-bullets, nor is it the fact that it is hard to replace once broken (unless the devs plan to add M56D crates). No, that flaw is the fact that it is MAN-OPERATED.

For it to work, it needs a gunner. A gunner that is very squishy. If a gas attack happens, guess who is running away? What if he is alone to defend a chokepoint? All xenos have to do is get rid of the gunner and the M56D is useless.

The sentry, on the other hand, is automated. Gas cloud headed your way? Sentry don't care, I don't think it even takes damage, so the moment that cloud lifts, it'll be the first "marine" shooting while the others move back into position. A marine and a sentry can make a great team as well, and provided they have a decent defense setup, can help hold an area with minimal manpower. The sentry can watch one flank, while the marine the other, ensuring an almost perfect 360 degree defense, provided they are positioned properly.

The M56D was always better for offensive operations, rapid deployment and all that. If you got two marines working together, you can quickly take it apart and put it back together in the blink of an eye, and it can certainly suppress a hallway with relative ease. But when it comes to defending an area for an extended amount of time, I always go for mah sentry boi. Course, it helps that I have an understanding of its limits and know how to take care of it, unlike a lot of engineers who just prep it and forget it, assuming it can take care of itself. The reality is the sentry is not a simple static defense, but an automated comrade that, when you work together with it, can hold off the swarm for a decent amount of time.

Good player on a M56 > Sentry when it works > Sentry when it doesen't work > bad player on M56
