Seriously though, the wiki doesn't explain what the safety actually does. This is how I think the sentry works, I can't say 100% it's right or wrong.
    It doesn't do anything

Apparently it's supposed to be like:
Safety's off - sentry hits everything in it's way to land a shot on it's target

In reality sentry still fires thru friendlies just fine in both modes
I went as far as trying to gun down marine zombies with their IDs on by turning off the safety and using manual mode(when it was still a thing) and failed

Sentries always get action. 56D's almost never do.

56 Takes too long to set up and take down, gets destroyed too easily, and lacks the RoF necessary for it to cover a wide area. So it's basically stuck plugging a hole - and only for as long as you've got a couple marines willing to sit there, and only so long as xenos have no boilers.

I'll see a 56 put to good use maybe once every ten or twenty rounds. Whereas Sentries get good use virtually every round. Even if all a sentry does is keep a drone/spitter/lurker off a line of cades, it's done more work than a 56 usually does.

M56D has more mobility and, if used by a non baldie, reliability than a single sentry. Its not limited to defenses and can be used offensively. If you are retreating from a position, good luck move the sentry while the M56D can be easily disassembled and moved, especially if you build your marine specifically for the M56D.

Sentries when theyre not sperging out have good use in an FOB defense, but thats it. If it is flanked gg. You need multiple sentriesto reliably kill anything. Lack of versatility and also unreliability, especially solo, make the sentry inferior to M56D atm.

So recently I've been paying more attention to the sentries and they do fire even when the safety is on. However the safety being turned off appears to do nothing. Honestly it seems like it just needs removing, although there's probably some deep code reason that can't be done.

You really only need a two-man team that has a grasp of CM mechanics to make the M56D more versatile and dangerous than the Sentry can ever be. If the Sentries would actually reflect the ROF they had in the movies, I would say something else. But as it stands, a sentry is a peashooter designed to ruin survivor rounds.

When you have a MG, you need one man to be the one setting it up and guarding it while the second one shoots the MG and you have a reliable way to cover fire and even kill a overzealous alien or two. It's accuracy doesn't even fall off that much over range, so you can even hit a boiler a screen away when you have binoculars (the engineer could also have the binoculars to tell you where to shoot).

Big Yes, I've seen people move the "D" around the field and re-wrench it for mass effect. Its range is down the map makes if great for suppression. Compare this to needing 2 sentries to get a hardcore mid-field hit count.

Sentry is like having extra bald stationery unga PFC trying to watch your back with burst fire on and shit ton of ammo behind you but IFF unlike any others ungas you got shot before.

Mounted smartgun at the another hand. Is you but stationary, you can prefire and determined whenever it worth firing. But you would more likely to miss, hit your fellow instead or not having any enemies that dare come to your range of fire anyway... wouldn't you?

    M56 is better.
Lowpop, medpop or highpop - One PFC with 5 IQ points and a well placed M56D can kill more xenos than all 3 turrets combined

If you arent retarded as engi, you can set up your M56D in 10 sec and dissamble in 3 sec while moving at the same speed that the rest of your squad. M56D isnt meant to be stationary it is meant to be a moveable turret securing the back of a push. In good hands, this is literally the most overpowered weapon of the game. However in bad hands it's fucking useless.

Sentry is totally useless in all case. Just pick M56D and learn to use it. Beginn with some basic outpost defense and then run it like a true Unga
