Bullets can go diagonaly, nades can't. Try to throw and shoot them in straight lines. Nades are blocked by basically every object and mob. Window frames and cades let nades trough. Even stupid wooden coffin and rest of anything pushable, or not doesn't.
From HEFA you need to have it about two tiles from the edge of your screen for shrapnels to disappear. HEDP has stun range of 4 tiles if I remember correctly. Incendiary have 3 tiles range. Chem nades can vary, from fart to mini OB.
UGL and GL nades explode faster, about a second after they land somewhere. GL nades lob over benos and marines.
Nades should be used like they are IRL. They are supposed to scare off the enemy and force him to get out of his cover, in case of benos you should throw them behind, or in the hole they will most likely try to escape. Any semi-decent beno will avoid nades pretty reliably, however this will be a test to skills. Either they don't escape and die to bullets, or try to escape and be stunned by nade.
You will stun only unluckely, outsmarted, or stupid benos with nades just throwed anywhere, don't count on them and don't use them in that way.
Tips: Don't use HEFA on benos, unless you can drop it right onto the tile where beno is currently critted/resting. This way it will eat whole package, otherwise it's not worth shit. All damage from HEFA can be avoided by just resting on other tile than HEFA is.
HEFA is great as suicide nade, just activate and put it back where it was.
Leave nades for robustos, don't carry more than two, you won't have good chance to use them anyway at first.
If you do plan to play with explosives, use Heavy armor (Use it always anyway).
You can throw nades into other Z-levels. Simply click with UNPRIMED nade on the ladder.
Don't trust Chem nades. 99% of them is unreliable and can work as bigger suicide nade. Otherwise they will husk marines, while barerly harming benos.
