Common Staff Situations
A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him. PM the potential griefer and the injured person asking for their side of the incident. Review say and emote logs of both players while waiting for a response, if there are no signs of retaliation immediately aheal the injured player. If the logs indicate wordless and emoteless shooting, it's grief, if they indicate some amount of RP going on that might have provoked the shooting it's improper escalation. Aheal the injured player at this point if it was either. Check notes on the person who committed the shooting; if there is no related history involved with grief, one/three day ban depending on how the griefer responded or if they wordlessly logged off. If there is no related history involving improper escalation, note. If there is history for grief/the player has been repeatedly noted in the past months, week ban. If there is related notes involving improper escalation, one/three day ban dependent on note severity.
A player ahelps that a predator has violated the honor code when killing him, what should you do? Tell them that the staff team at the current time does not handle whitelist violations and let them know that they should file a player report against the predator if they believe the predator violated their whitelist guidelines. Give them the ckey of the predator player in question.
You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost at roundstart. Mentor and/or SEA's job.
A player is being very rude to you in adminhelps, calling you names and arguing everything you say. He is requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member. I don't really care if someone is being rude to me. If it indicates remorseless/a belief they have committed no wrongdoing the punishment they receive for whatever they did may be increased in certain situations such as grief. He is not entitled to speak to a particular staff member and I will inform them of that in simple terms.
A player ahelps that a marine is named 'John Doe', how do you deal with this? PM the player John Doe and tell them their name is improper because of the fact that it can be considered a reference to law enforcement terms and allow them to give me a name they want their name to be changed to. Check note history. If the player is adamant about their name, force change their name and ID. First/second offense with low note history, another note. If they're a repeated offender, 3 hour/day ban.
You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green and there has been no threat to the ship in the round at this point. IC issue. The MPs should be on alert for this sort of behavior.
A Marine ahelps that they were killed by a survivor. It is early round, the Marines have just landed, and the survivor claims that they were outright hostile to all Marines from the get-go and openly stated their intentions. How do you deal with this? Aheal the marine. Check note history from the survivor player. With no relevant notes, note them and inform them that they are not allowed to be hostile at the current moment unless given explicit permission by admins. Apply a ban with length dependent on note history if they have already been informed of this in the past.
You receive an ahelp from a player stating that an MP has locked them up in permanent confinement for running into Requisitions and taking an attachment that was laying around. PM the MP and ask for their side of the story and the charges. Check logs for the MP's verbal announcement of charges before the arrest; it's possible the marine is self incriminating himself or unaware that MPs need to state charges prior to an arrest if the suspect was compliant.
It is impossible to stack charges against a marine to permabrig them, although you can put them into the brig for 60 minutes if you max time Theft and max time Resisting Arrest. You may only permabrig if the charge *exceeds* 60 minutes, not if it is 60 minutes.
If the MP states charges that are different than
The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other? Queen mother announcement to tell the xenos to charge forward if the Queen is still alive, PM the xenos telling them they should attack if the Queen is not alive. Abomb stragglers continuing to delay the round. Tell the Captain or acting Commanding Officer via PMs to have his marines push out and attack.
You are playing as a medic, and another medic overdoses all your patients and prevent marines from being revived. It seems like it may be on purpose. How do you deal with this situation? I am not allowed to handle a situation where I am involved in. Sending in an ahelp in clear detail is the best course of action rather than spouting it over msay across multiple lines of text, to make log diving in case of a report easier.
The round ends, a Marine starts shooting a hostile CLF member and the CLF member ahelps about being killed after the round ended. Inform the CLF member that EORG only applies to people shooting their teammates, and enemies are allowed to continue fighting to the death otherwise.
A Marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start. You receive an ahelp from one of the victims. Depends on the equipment and gear being stolen. If it is random wackass weapons and attachments, it's an IC issue. If it's specialist gear, asleep the marine in question and allow the spec to recover their gear. Check note history. If there is grief or extensive note history, day or three day ban. If there is no note history, inform them that stealing significantly important equipment to the marines is a form of griefing and is not tolerated. Apply a note.
You receive an ahelp from a Marine saying that he was killed by another Marine. When you ask the murderer why, he said it was because the other Marine had punched him. Assuming the logs are correct, inform the marine that escalation rules have to be followed and that you need to go from fist to knife to gun and explain that people in real life typically don't whip out guns and unload into people for punching them. Check note history. Apply a note if there's low note history, day/three day ban if otherwise.
You find out that there is an improper mutiny occuring. The mutineers are rallying together and preparing to storm the CIC. How would you attempt to resolve this situation? Asleep the mutineers. Inform them via LOOC that they cannot perform a mutiny without first ahelping and receiving permission from staff, and ask them to send in an ahelp. Request a fellow moderator via msay to asleep anyone that attempts to kill or otherwise mess with their bodies as this is going on, or do it myself if nobody else is available. Apply notes, day, or three day bans dependent on note history.
There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it. Inform them that it is an IC issue. Roleplay does not always mean being nice to everyone and thinking the right thing. If it is clearly directed and excessively toxic it may become an OOC issue, but until then it is not a rulebreak. Encourage the player to try and find some enjoyment in it, such as telling the marine off or challenging them to a fight in the boxing ring to blow steam ICly.
A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off. Aheal everyone injured. Assuming there is nothing else to this case, apply a week ban. File for perma.
You see a player playing a Xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines straight from the Xeno hive the second they burst and die. PM the player for their side of the story. Check note history. Unless there are exceptional circumstances (player heard the queen was at the LZ and ran into the frontline thinking there were no marines nearby on accident for instance), apply a note and request xeno ban on next offense, xeno ban if there are notes related to larva suiciding or an extensive note history.
You see a Xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat, as well as insulting the Queen. PM the player asking them for their side of the story. If they get pissy and deny responsibility it just makes the job easier. Check note history. Apply a note if it's first offense/minor note history; apply a day/three day ban if there is substantial note history backing this and/or a remorseless attitude.
A Xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different Xeno player ahelps that it's low role play to call it a "dropship". Inform the ahelping individual that the Xeno language is, essentially, a direct English translation, and so saying "dropship" or using the proper English terminology for equipment the marines have is not LRP.
A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet. You receive an ahelp from a marine regarding this. If the individual was speaking with utmost certainty there are aliens on the planet, inform the Command player that while aliens are in fact on the planet, they don't necessarily know this, only that they know xenos exist in the universe. Apply a note if this is the case. If the Command player was saying that they just "had a hunch" and aren't certain if there are xenos, it isn't a rulebreak.
You find a Marine killing another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself. There are two other marines in the pod along with him. It is not a rulebreak to kill another person to save your own life, and you are even allowed to wordlessly kill somebody if it is important enough to warrant it.
A player insults you after you warn them for a minor issue and begins ranting in LOOC or dchat about staff and mentions you specifically, referring to you as an 'idiot' and a 'retard'. I don't care. They can have their own opinion and shout it at the top of their lungs if they want so long as they're not going out of their way to harass people.
A player ahelps saying he was hugged by a Xeno when he was ssd, and wants the larva be removed from him via admin powers. How do you handle the ahelp? Inform them that staff does not aheal or assist people who are injured or stolen from in any way, shape or form, regardless of the circumstances that required them to go SSD.
You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforce a rule. Inform them in msay about the issue. If they continue to give the wrong information I may send a corrective PM to the player to set the record straight. If the rule is enforced incorrectly and they refuse to correct it, I inform their appropriate manager.
Two staff are arguing in msay if an ahelp is breaking a rule. Because the staff who took the ahelp thinks the player broke a rule, they ban the player based on their interpretation of the rules, with others thinking the person was fine. What would you do? The rules are subjective to a degree which allows staff to enforce the rules however they want, even if it is not conducive towards preserving entertainment. If the punishment was too severe or the rule should not have been applied at all because there is no logical argument that can be made for the rule's application, I inform them of it and DM the appropriate manager.
Why would you like to become a moderator? I want to preserve the enjoyment for players in a round and be there to timely handle situations that I know sucks to be in as a player who cannot do anything about it. I want to be able to empathize with staff who I may not have always agreed with in the past and see things through their eyes to more accurately understand what staff have to deal with on a day to day basis. I view it as an opportunity to further hone my composure, remain impartial and perfect myself.
In your opinion, what is the most important quality for a moderator? Keeping the game fun for everyone involved and handling situations in a responsible manner. That's all that matters and that is all staff is there for, not to punish people they personally do not approve of or to grasp at straws to find things to be punished in situations, even if they wasted a lot of their time investigating something that technically isn't a rulebreak.
Anything else you im fuckign awesome
