    Just L - Commander Application

    Commander Whitelist Application
    Byond ID?
    Just L

    Player Name You Use Most?
    Orlando 'Florida' Blackburn

Make a list of links to all of your applications and (job)ban appeals, including whitelist and staff apps, within the last year. Also, provide "Ban reason; Verdict" beside each (job)ban link
https://cm-ss13.com/forums/showthrea...-(Discord-Ban) | Permanent discord ban for posting a CBT joke

Have you received any ban within the last month? How long was it and what for?
Just a discord ban for posting a .webm file where the filename was the initial paragraph for the CBT wikipedia page.

Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines?
    Yes

How do you view the tool of Battlefield Execution to be used? What circumstances do you think it would be necessary to BE a member of the crew? Where do you think the Battlefield Execution Mechanic Differs from regular Execution and why?
Battlefield Executions (BEs) are specifically for removing a player from the round that is actively ruining the round, such as someone that is going around attacking people violently and then hiding in lockers or in maintenance. Using a BE on someone who is just doing a bad job is NOT what it is for, such as a RO that is slow at ordering ammo or supplies, or a doctor who makes a few too many mistakes on a surgery and nearly kills a marine. These are cases to teach someone how to play better, not drive them away by giving them the ultimate 'You fucked up' answer and killing them for the rest of the round.

It is different than a regular execution in that a CO can do it whenever they feel it is absolutely necessary, rather than having to decide if the accused has done a capital crime worthy of an execution, as it is sort of a grey area outside of the Marine Law rules.

How will your Commanding Officer run his/her ship? Provide a detailed explanation on how he would handle situations that might commonly occur such as, a insubordinate Req, Engineering, MP, or Command Staff
Blackburn will take a more hands-off approach to running the ship, usually leaving things in the hands of the departments, their heads, the XO, and CIC staff. He is more of a frontline commander, but not in the memey way that some COs are described as “PFC++++”. He will manage the fight from the front lines or just behind the front lines, and take the fight to the front when absolutely necessary.

When it comes to insubordinate crew on the ship, he would deal with it on a case-by-case basis, asking the crew under him why they are acting the way they are instead of taking heavy-handed actions, such as sending the MPs to arrest them immediately. Talking with the crew members first about why they are not doing their jobs will lead to a better understanding between the CO and them, and will hopefully lead to a positive resolution instead of having to send them to time-out in the brig.

However, when it comes to insubordinate military police, this is something that generally would be ahelped/spoken to high command about if it was too out of hand (Such as a MP stealing things, breaking marine/server law, and so on), as to be frank Marine Law is a complete and total mess and the less involvement people have with it IC, the better.

What do you think is the job of a Commander?
The job of a Commander in CM is different than the job of a Commander IRL. It still has the same general purpose, but overall I think the job of the Commander is to do his best to make the round more fun for everyone on both sides of the fight. This means taking actions to keep the round moving along, unless it would be completely stupid to do so (Such as telling the entire marine force to push a 2x2 chokepoint with 2 boilers watching it.)

The Commander is supposed to also make sure that everything is going fine shipside when possible, filling in for missing crew or making sure that someone else is assigned to fill the job of the missing crew—the RO can also fix the engines, for example, and the synth can handle medbay. The CO also is supposed to work with the staff when there is an event going on to try and make the event run smoothly. I personally will prefer OOC talk about what I should try to have happen IC during an event, since unclear instructions in events tend to make them go poorly.

As a player what do you think could be added for Commanding Officer to benefit the role?
More choices for equipment for the commanding officer. A special CO shotgun, one of the specialist kits or just the option to take any of the standard kits like JTAC, HPR, MOU53 field test kit, and so on. More choices for what to spend DEFCON points on would also be a good addition, since the current ones are more or less set in stone. (Defcon 5 – Req Points, 4 – Req points and sometimes pilot points, 3 – Cryo marine reinforcements, 2 – LTB-TOW tank, 1 - Nuke)

Special loadouts for each squad would also make planning out strategy more fun as well, and introduce new ways to play the game. Stuff like 'Enhanced Engineer Training' that would allow every member of a squad to do what squad engineers do, while also buffing the squad engineers (Make them use less metal/plasteel, build faster, etc) or unlocking special armaments for the squads, such as nonstandard weapons that are usually only found in black market crates from req.

What do you think you could contribute by being whitelisted?
What I personally can bring to the game as CO is my experience in roleplaying, as I have been playing tabletop RPGs for over a decade and I have been a game master for about 8 years, so I know how to encourage roleplay and make it fun for everyone involved. I also will strive to try out different tactics during rounds instead of the same standard meta-strategies for each map (IE Hydro-Nexus FOB on LV-624, Megafob LZ1 on Big Red, Megafob LZ1 on Ice colony and so on) while also being competent at leading the marines themselves and making it fun for them and the xenos. The average marine player really just wants to fight xenos and act like the marines from the Aliens film, albeit somewhat more memey, and I will try my best to foster fun roleplay and gameplay for everyone involved in the game.

When it comes to something such as roleplay on the ship with the CL, since he is really the only role that exists 100% for roleplay, I will try my best to make it fun for the CL as well, though from what I have seen there is very little for the CL to do besides hassle the command staff and try to get them to sign contracts. Maybe in the future CL and the CO could have more to do together, but until then there’s very little to be done.

From what I understand, a decent chunk of the playerbase likes having me as their squad leader or overwatch, and I enjoy playing the leadership roles in CM. I find XO to be fun only when there is no CO, since the XO generally has nothing important to do if there is a CO and ends up either working CIC like a Staff Officer or deploying to the front line and just calling in fire support.

Your story (potential topics listed below)
Not one to advertise the unpleasant parts of his past much, Orlando Blackburn instead tries to put out an aura of warmth and comfortable respect. His normally-stoic expression belies the attempts at humor he so often makes, preferring to earn the respect of his men by treating them as well as he treats himself—and by endearing them to himself via his good-natured approach to interacting with them.

Blackburn was born on Luna, in the poorer parts of the Olympia colony. His parents did not plan to have a child, but there he was anyway. As a result, his parents did not even give him a proper name, instead naming him after the only piece of entertainment they had in their possession – The old Earth movie “Black Hawk Down”, specifically the actor Orlando Bloom in the film. This was hilarious to them, and completely failed to register with him as a joke.

Eventually, Blackburn was left to fend for himself in his teenage years, his parents having wholly left in the middle of the night one day. He wandered around Olympia for some time, receiving handouts and charity from a few people, until he eventually found himself at a Jewish Synagogue called “Temple Olympis Kahal”. The rabbi and congregation offered him a place to stay. This particular temple happened to be both for religious purposes… and for martial ones. The head rabbi at the temple taught Blackburn the ancient arts of Krav Maga, which set the young man on his path towards the military then and there. He was enamored with combat at this point, craving the visceral feeling it gave him compared to the daily suffering and scavenging of his life beforehand, able to give something his all for once. This synagogue is also where Blackburn learned to laugh again, as they hosted weekly movie nights for the populace on Olympia, specifically with decades or even centuries-old films from Earth. Comedy films were his favorite, though he did take a keen interest in action and kung-fu films as well.

Speaking with the rabbi once he reached the age of enlistment, Orlando received his blessings to join the USCM, giving him some funds and wishing him well in his future. Blackburn boldly went forth to the nearest USCM Recruitment Office, joining up with the marines and partially bypassing boot camp due to his impressive physique and religious status. This earned him the ire of many fellow squadmates, but the respect of others who looked at him as ‘finding a way to skip past those fucking drill sergeants’ as one marine put it. Blackburn already had some issues with authority, but this only made it more pronounced.

Despite the oddities in his past, Blackburn was an impressive soldier. Not a legendary one, but a skilled and confident one nonetheless. He performed well on most of his deployments, killing a number of dirty space commies and CLF. Blackburn is wholly convinced that the CLF are simply a rebel faction created entirely by the UPP to wage a war against the USCM on a different front than the UPP, and he is incredibly distrustful of any Eastern Europeans, if not outright hostile to them.

Over the years, Blackburn earned a name for himself, both by leading men and brave actions—such as defeating three CLF disguised as USCM in hand to hand combat before they could assassinate a Lieutenant, charging an enemy position while wielding two MOU53 shotguns and firing all six barrels with near-perfect accuracy into the opposing forces, and managing to use an entire box of HEFA grenades to kill a single xenomorph drone, quite possibly the most impressive act of his entire military career. His squadmates, most of them finding his bizarre past a point of interest rather than something to berate him over, and eventually he was christened (or jewished) with the nickname ‘Florida’ due to the legends of the Florida Man from Earth, renowned for taking truly ridiculous actions that seemingly made no sense, but always worked out in the end.

Blackburn eventually went for a commission, his past actions earning him an easy spot in the officer training school, and he worked his way up to CO over the course of a number of deployments, becoming known for his use of unexpected and strange tactics, yet still finding success on many of his operations. Perhaps this is why he was assigned to the USS Almayer, in command of the Falling Falcons—an unconventional group of conscripts and soldiers for a very much unconventional commander.

Orlando is top tier roleplayer and has always been a robust and adaptable SL and XO during my own rounds, will no doubt bring the same fun and variety to CO. Glad that you view the CO as a job for facilitating fun rounds, not just winning everything, excited to see more people adopting the field CO style too. Big +1

Just L's knowledge of game mechanics is quite thorough and his roleplay has always been enjoyable to take part in. I think his backstory and new ideas for additions to the CO role are solid. +1

One hell of a fellow SL but don't recall seeing ya as my OW.

You were competent in leading squads and when you were in command you seemed to help those squads out just fine so I see nothin wrong with ya as CO.

Thanks Compy. I used to roll for SO a lot more, but I found that I can help people out and have a lot more fun as SL, so I switched over entirely to it. I've got XO and SO set to low priority, so I do rarely roll it sometimes.
I do have a couple of medals for playing XO/SO for what it's worth.

Great SO and SL, though I have never really seen you as XO. Application is great too.

Your one of the SOs that I trust as XO and I think you can easily adjust to CO.

    Good luck

Thanks man. I have played XO a few times since I came back from my break, but I feel like CO is where the real fun is at. I wanna give marines medals and stuff for kicking ass, you know?
If you want a few examples of my XO games, I believe my second or third XO round since I came back was with Aestel Wellick as the CO, we did an LZ2 ice deployment and I managed CIC mostly by myself for the entire round, and we ended up winning. Windhealer also gave me a medal for an XO round I had where I was able to keep the marines well organized.

As I said above, I generally don't roll for XO or SO much anymore, since Squad Lead has much more of an impact and far more chances to roleplay the way that Blackburn works best, which is being a stupid action movie character on the front lines.

Blackburn is a fantastic SO and one of the few other Command Staff that I'm always happy to see at my side in the CiC. From what I've seen of the handful of times when he chooses to XO, he's very aware and attentive of what's going on not only on the ground, but also willing to RP and give attention to the ship side crew without taking away from the ground side operations.

His willingness to follow orders as an SL is also commendable and shows his ability to listen and follow commands in regards to the information being provided on a grand scale while cooperating and providing backup to the other squads he's deployed with.

I can only see good things from him having the CO role. +1
