    FortyPercent - Moderator Application

    Moderator Application

    Personal Information

    Byond ID?
    FortyPercent

    CM Character?
Robert Hale / Bob "Dangerzone" Hale

    Are you 16 or older?
    Yes

    Timezone
    Yuro

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
Probably at least 20-40, not sure.

    Qualifications

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
I've been on-and-off mod in couple smaller chatrooms and forums. Mostly roleplaying related (in german). Though at this point, most of them petered out and died off slowly and the one left is like ten people, at which point there's really not much modding

Do you play any servers aside from CM-SS13?
/tg/-station and goon station, on occasion. But not a lot.

Provide links to any previous Colonial Marines applications that you've made:
Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
As stated under staff experience, not really.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
    Nah

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, which server, when, and what for?
    Nah

Are you familiar with the chat program Discord (its use is required)?
    Yes

Communication is a vital part of being a Moderator. Are you willing to actively do so with the team?
Sure. Don't really see how you can mod without that conceit.

    Common Staff Situations

A player randomly shoots someone at round start and MPs have detained him.
Check his notes. If there's a previous one stating he's out on the next warning, he's out. If not, next step kinda depends on how bad the shooting was. Yunno, spree shooter in briefing or escalation over a scuffle in the req line.

Send him a message, ask for his side, and explain why he did bad next. Then finally decide between note, warning or temp ban based on the responses and the impact on the round.

A player ahelps that a predator has violated the honor code when killing him, what should you do?
    Ha. I've been there.

Provide him with the ckey of the Predator, remind him to make sure to remember the time stamp of when it happened and point him at the report forums.

I mean, that is unless the pred did something crazy like blow up in briefing. That'd need more direct attention. But breaking the honor code is a Whitelist Council problem.

You see a player walking around the ship naked and clearly lost at roundstart.
Shoot him a message and ask him if he needs help to find out what to do. Then either direct him at the nearest SEA/alert the nearest SEA, or if none is around see what I can do about helping him along the way myself. Also link him the quickstart rules and remind him to take a peek at the server rules.

Or, if he wants to figure it out by himself, I guess that's up to him. Just a reminder about making sure not to break any server rules and that CM is a little less whacky than other SS13 servers.

A player is being very rude to you in adminhelps, calling you names and arguing everything you say. He is requesting to speak to an Admin+ staff member.
Check his notes and act accordingly if something is prompted.

Otherwise, inform him that he's stuck with me. And that he can open a report on the forums if he thinks I'm not dealing with him properly. Depending on just how bad it gets, I might mute him as well after that. ...if I can do that. I probably can.

A player ahelps that a marine is named 'John Doe', how do you deal with this?
Message John and tell him that we have a rule concerning names, and he might want to read through the server rules again. Then rename him, asking what he wants his new name to be, and telling him to change it after the round. Also a note on his account about the incident. Maybe more, depending on his note history.

You see a Maintenance Tech running around in armor and carrying a rifle. The security level is green and there has been no threat to the ship in the round at this point.
That's an IC issue. If I'm playing MP I'll hunt that bastard to the ends of the earth and lock him up for his crimes against our lord and saviour, the SOP, but if not that doesn't seem like something I should get involved with.

A Marine ahelps that they were killed by a survivor. It is early round, the Marines have just landed, and the survivor claims that they were outright hostile to all Marines from the get-go and openly stated their intentions. How do you deal with this?
Unless it's a CLF event, that' against the rules. Depending on the survs responses to my chat with him and note history, warning or worse, plus a reminder to read through the server rules and especially the Roleplay Standards before playing survivor again.

You receive an ahelp from a player stating that an MP has locked them up in permanent confinement for running into Requisitions and taking an attachment that was laying around.
Figure out who their arresting officer is, and then have a chat with 'em about why. If there's other reasons, that's fine. In that case I might have a chat with the prisoner about ahelping and leaving out information. If not, I remind the MP that there are maximum sentences and that he needs to read marine law again. And should let the marine go. And add a note to his account, or worse.

The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the ship, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
QM the xenos into redeeming their genes by staging one last glorious assault. And then maybe send a SM to the a/CO as well that they have a feeling there's only a handful xenos left and now would be the time to finish them. Or a fax from HC instruction them to wrap up operations and prepare for transit to the next operation theatre ASAP.

You are playing as a medic, and another medic overdoses all your patients and prevent marines from being revived. It seems like it may be on purpose. How do you deal with this situation?
Since I'm personally involved, at least somewhat, I'll ahelp for another mod/admin to look into it. If nobody else is around, I'll try to looc. Maybe report 'em on the forums afterwards if its bad.

The round ends, a Marine starts shooting a hostile CLF member and the CLF member ahelps about being killed after the round ended.
Tell him that's fine because EORG only applies to FF, not hostile forces.

A Marine is running around disarming, punching and stealing gear at round start. You receive an ahelp from one of the victims.
Likely just an IC issue, so I inform the victim to tell MP. On lowpop, when there's unlikely to be MP, I might message the marine and tell 'em to cool it.

Depending on the severity and note history of the thief, though, I might choose sterner words and apply a warning or worse.

You receive an ahelp from a Marine saying that he was killed by another Marine. When you ask the murderer why, he said it was because the other Marine had punched him.
Check the note history right away. Then have a little chat and either issue a warning, act according to notes or if it's a new player and the victim is only downed not dead-dead they might get away with me just pointing them at the rules, especially 4 and 14.

You find out that there is an improper mutiny occuring. The mutineers are rallying together and preparing to storm the CIC. How would you attempt to resolve this situation?
I'm not sure if mods can use mOOC. If yes, use that. If not, message the marines individually and remind them that all mutinies have to be sanctioned over ahelp first.

There are minor racist comments going on IC. 9 of the 10 people are laughing and RPing but one player gets offended and Adminhelps about it.
Inform them that minor racism IC is fine. If they think it crosses the line to OOC, provide them with the ckey of the offender and point them at the player report forums.

A marine opens fire at round start in briefing killing multiple marines and instantly logs off.
Seems like pretty cut and dry griefing. Apply a ban (3 or 7 days, not sure which one), note it and check with the mod team on what to do next.

You see a player playing a Xeno larva/chestburster run towards the frontlines straight from the Xeno hive the second they burst and die.
Check note history. Then either apply a xeno job band, or if they are apologetic and/or are a new player, apply a warning and remind them that combat larvas are not allowed.

You see a Xeno memeing, saying AYYLMAO, REEEEEE etc in hivemind chat, as well as insulting the Queen.
Check note history. Then either apply a xeno job band, or if they are apologetic and/or are a new player, apply a warning and remind them that that's LRP and will lead to a job ban if he keeps it up.

A Xeno player calls the shuttle a "dropship". A different Xeno player ahelps that it's low role play to call it a "dropship".
While I personally think that xeno vocabulary is good (and cute), xenos communicate over hivemind so saying dropship is fine. I inform the reporting player that it's not a rule violation and to just go ahead and set a good example himself by calling out birds and talls properly.

A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet. You receive an ahelp from a marine regarding this.
If it's Windhealer's Xendingos, I'll let it slide. Because c'mon.

Otherwise, I'll message the CIC member and remind them about the roleplay standards and that they don't know what's down there. Further action according to notes and playtime.

You find a Marine killing another Marine on the EVAC Pod to take the last spot and claims it was RP as he was saving himself. There are two other marines in the pod along with him.
It's not EORG yet, so no automatic ban. I'd probably check the logs and maybe shoot a message to the other two marines. If he roleplayed it, it's fine. That's something someone would reasonably do. If he just unloaded without a word and then immediately climbed into the freezer just to get into the ERT, I might note him for powerplay. Case by case differences.

A player insults you after you warn them for a minor issue and begins ranting in LOOC or dchat about staff and mentions you specifically, referring to you as an 'idiot' and a 'retard'.
Ranting against staff excessively is against the rules. So if I can, I'd mute him. Also, as with the other issue above, point him at the forums where he can file a report on me if he thinks I did him wrong. If his response to that is equally colourful, I'd ahelp it.

A player ahelps saying he was hugged by a Xeno when he was ssd, and wants the larva be removed from him via admin powers. How do you handle the ahelp?
Tell him that there's no rules against attacking SSD characters, so he'd better hurry to the nearest operating table.

You see a fellow staff member give wrong information in an Adminhelp or incorrectly enforce a rule.
Shoot them a private message to try and clear it up. Maybe escalate it to an Admin/Manager if that chat goes nowhere, just to clear up which one of us was in the right there so that same issue doesn't crop up again.

Two staff are arguing in msay if an ahelp is breaking a rule. Because the staff who took the ahelp thinks the player broke a rule, they ban the player based on their interpretation of the rules, with others thinking the person was fine. What would you do?
I'd likely rather not get involved at all. But, if the argument is heated, just tell 'em that they can take it up to an admin/manager for a judgement call. And there's likely always time to hash out the details in the mod forums/channels later.

Why would you like to become a moderator?
Been playing a lot of CM and I quite like the community. I'm not exactly the most talkative or one of those names that stand out from the crowd, but there's been all those mod retirements lately so I figured I'd throw my hat into the ring to pick up a little of the slack.

In your opinion, what is the most important quality for a moderator?
Just one, huh? I'd say a calm, helpful attitude, even if that is technically two. Possibly.

    Anything else you
I'm assuming there's a sentencing guideline somewhere, but I couldn't find it browsing the forum, just in bits and pieces from browsing through appeals. Is it in a secret mod forum, or am I just blind?

My forum perms haven't been removed yet even though I retired, but before they are...

A Command staff player at briefing near round-start mentions there are aliens on the planet. You receive an ahelp from a marine regarding this.
Please avoid player favoritism, staff are supposed to be as impartial as possible.

You find out that there is an improper mutiny occuring. The mutineers are rallying together and preparing to storm the CIC. How would you attempt to resolve this situation?
Yes, you can and should use MOOC to stop that from happening.

You are playing as a medic, and another medic overdoses all your patients and prevent marines from being revived. It seems like it may be on purpose. How do you deal with this situation?
Reports are reserved for whitelist issues and issues that weren't able to be handled ingame for whatever reason.

And lastly, our general procedure is to go with the least harsh punishment appropriate for the rulebreak. You'll be briefed on that and other stuff when you're accepted. And you're a good player so I don't see why wouldn't you get a trial.

    +1

    Thank you for applying!

Rem here pointed out what needed so no need to go into more detail on your answers, though I am slightly concerned on the favoritism of certain players. I know everyone does it but as staff ESPECIALLY Moderator/Admin you need to push that aside as much as possible.

+1 from me as I hope you understand the whole ordeal on favorites and I trust that you'll overcome it to the best of your abilities.

I gotta agree with Doctor Compy, favoritism should be avoided as much as possible as it causes bias which may lead to them getting away with something they should have not.

    I will remain Neutral.

Right, uh, I meant to say like Windhealer's Xendingos. Based on the whole "As long as the players are having a blast and not every single rule is being broken, it's okay to let some things slide here and there." rule from the mod code of conduct. They just seemed to be the most obvious example for something that I'd personally let slide in regards to that particular question.

But I do understand that having favourites is a big problem for modding.

Forest and Compy brought a good point. Favoritism may bias your decision and you have a lot of notes from recent months. I am unable to support you at this time. -1

Alright, my notes. I’ve gotten three of them.

    Being a shitter in dchat
    Being a bald CMP
    Being a bad CMP

The first one was as Alpha SL, my very first time as SL ever, if memory serves right. Prison Station. We were chasing Xenos through a one cell wide, three or four cell long gap, an unga got in front of me and downed by... something. I didn’t have medhud so assumed he was dead. Then the queen cane around the corner and I flamered her. That’s when I learned queens are immune to fire. I died. In my own fire.
Then in dead chat the unga called me out for being dumb and bald (both of which apply in retro perspective) in not the kindest of words, so I fired back mocking him for getting in front of a flamer wielding Alpha because memes. Mod called me out, I apologised, and have since stopped shit talking like that in dead chat. I do like to think that I’ve developed beyond that at this point. ...though I admittedly catch myself being the guy who prompted my response back then these days.

Next one was the prisoner out of brig. The full logs of my conversation about it with the mod who noted me can be found in my CO application, so I won’t repost them here.
To make it short, a prisoner wanted to cook himself a last meal before going into perma. CO was busy and told me to figure it out with SOP and ML. Neither covered it. So I allowed it and had an MP escort the prisoner to the kitchen.
Where the MP then ahelped if he could go rogue and allow the prisoner to flee because he didn’t agree with the sentence the prisoner got. So I indirectly enticed an MP to break rule 15.
Since then, I’ve made sure not to put MP into situations like that again and remind them of their duties/server rules when it seems like they’re wavering.

Which gets us to note three. This one... I have no excuses for. Well. At the time my internal reasoning was “herpderp, no ML against blackmail, let’s do crooked CMP and wring the CL for every penny he’s got. Make myself a CL ID, proper number and all, plant some sec gear in the CLs office, have a chat with him, allow him to pay to avoid being charged. No ML gets actually broken, I get some RP, it’s the perfect crime.”
...but CMP are supposed to follow the spirit of the Marine Law, not just the letter. Be the beacon of righteousness and all that. So I didn’t even object when the mod called me out, put the ID back, and like to think I have since been a model CMP.

I perfectly understand that these excuses are just that (let alone less than that in the last case), but I like to think I learned from all of them and have become a less shitty player since. And would greatly appreciate the opportunity to prove this during a trial.

Though I understand just as well if some people do not see it like that and hold moderation to a higher standard than I am able to meet at this point.
