Obviously L42 with B8 smart scope. If you suck at aiming, you will most likely FF marines which isn't good even with M39 that somehow has bigger AP than Pulse Rifle does.
Unironically the flamer.
It literally shows you how bullet/flame pathfinding(is that a good term?) works.
I used to be in the same boat as your "friend". I sucked at aiming and was not unga at all. I flip flopped between the M3A3, M39 SMG, M41A rifle, L42A rifle, and a shotgun - both slug and buck style. I found out through lots ofdeathsexperience that a buckshot shotgun point-blank style is marginally better than the previous choices. Buckshot PB takes a little bit of muscle memory, hotkey, and skill to pull off effectively. It'll be hard learning it and you'll probably die a lot of times, but it does end up being the best gun in the marine arsenal so far other than OB's. I encourage people to use buckshot shotguns over any other weapon, but it takes an unga mindset and trust in others to not gat you in the back. I suggest training by getting up in the xenos face and clicking the tile past them if you aren't comfortable with trying to directly click on a sprite. It's not a true PB, but its a good substitute - hell, I use it sometimes when a runner or lurker pounces a buddy and I don't wanna accidentally PB my dude. Otherwise, if you really really do not feel like using a shotgun, then an L42A with a B8 smart scope is second best, as a couple of hits subtract a good chunk out of a t1 or t2's HP bar.
TLDR - PB shotgun or bust, L42A with B8 if you ain't feeling unga.
P.S - If you attach an L42A with a bayonet and a B8 smartscope, you can use that to train PB'ing to a lesser extent, but just don't forget about the hotkey to rack the shotgun slide. The L42A PB with a bayonet does about 75% of the damage as a buckshot PB, but this is based on me accidentally PB'ing a fellow marine with the L42A bayonet + PB shot.

Smartpistol if you want to train your aim in between fights and Buckshot for when you want to put your traning to practice.
The most important thing to remember is to never use pistols except smartpistol, unless you happen to have a pistol-sized slot in your satchel that you don't want to fill with flares.

Y-yea, use the flamer if you can't aim

maybe your problem is positioning rather than aiming
you do want to position your self in a way that you have a clear and straight firing line while your targets line up
other than that, load up on 20 M41A magazines go to the firing range place some targets in different ways, and figure out how to aim and the firing lines you need to go for to hit the target
Sheeesh this boy LRP as hell!
