Samantha Maverick was born on July 17, 2148, to parents Joseph Maverick and Caitlyn Andrews Maverick, in a middle-class family in Chicago, Illinois. She is the second in a line of three children, preceded by her older sister Claire Maverick and her younger brother Maxwell Maverick.
Her father, a serving Commander in the United States Colonial Marine Corps, was often away from home, deployed as part of the Second Fleet to secure distant worlds. Samantha and her family rarely got to see her father, treasuring the few times when he did come home during school assemblies and during Memorial and Veteran’s Day.
Samantha grew up in the city, attending Mark T. Skinner West Elementary School in downtown Chicago and later Northwest Middle School and Jones College Prep High School. An above-average student, she would often make the higher end of many ranking boards and was a prominent team member of her schools’ soccer and track teams.
Samantha grew up in the shadow of her sister, Claire, who left to join the USCM when Samantha was only 12 years old. A role model to her, Samantha often strove to follow her sister’s footsteps in the dominantly-military Maverick household.
Her father was tragically killed in action protecting his soldiers on November 9, 2163, when Samantha was 16 years old, two days before Veteran’s Day. Joseph’s unit offered a memorial service to the family on November 11 at Arlington National Cemetery, posthumously awarding him the Medal of Honor and bestowing the decorations to their mother. Framing the medal and its accoutrements on the living room wall, the presence led Claire to accelerate her advancement in the ranks and inspired Samantha, like her father and her sister, to join the USCM.
Her mother initially objected, stating she didn’t want another one of her family members to go, but eventually gave in after several days of long quarreling. Samantha enlisted in the JROTC program of Jones High School, later graduating and writing to Senator Jameson Ford of Illinois to give her a recommendation letter to join the United States Naval Academy.
Samantha signed up for the Colonial Navy branch of the USCM, graduating after four years as an Ensign. She initially served in the Second Fleet, aboard the USS Constantinople, for command training and exercises while the vessel patrolled space.
Complications in staffing and the general lacking of personnel in the more remote parts of the USCM led to Samantha’s transfer to the Third Fleet in 2176, when she was a Lieutenant. Claire, who served in the First as a Commander, lobbied immensely to try and get her sister to be transferred to the First Fleet but was ultimately turned down.
Samantha was assigned to the USS Montpelier, a Marine transport craft, for her tour in the Third Fleet, serving as a staff officer for the Montpelier’s marine complement. While serving on the Montpelier she was trained in Marine combat command and, upon completion, was often deployed to the battlefield along her troops to serve as a platoon commander. Samantha, after approximately two years of service and forty-eight combat drops to her name, accredited several medals for her notable service on the battlefield, culminating in being awarded the Navy and Marine Corps medal.
By the end of her two-year service on the Montpelier, she was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and reassigned to shore operations in Herculis as a logistics officer. It was also during this time that Samantha conducted humanitarian operations on the planet and was subsequently awarded the Humanitarian Medal for coordinating relief to colonies on the planet whose resources ran low due to the sector’s relatively low funding.
It was also around this time that Samantha had learned that Claire had recently been promoted to Rear Admiral Lower Half.
Her service in Herculis led to her eventual promotion to Commander and was instated as the Executive Officer of the USS Yukon after completing Command-at-Sea qualification. She was promoted Captain, and subsequently to the Commanding Officer of the Yukon, after three years on tour with the vessel, completing several runs and notably giving the ship a notable track record for its service in counter-insurgency campaigns across the Third Fleet’s area of operations.
In 2190 Captain Maverick was appointed to the position of Commodore and admitted to the Fleet’s staffing office to work partially as one of five Executive Assistants to RADM Frans Feiffer at fleet headquarters. In addition, she was also made the Commodore of the Third Fleet's Fourth Division.
In March 2191 she was promoted to Rear Admiral with the retirement of the previous Commander, Bjorn Sigvaldsson. She is now the new Commander of the 3rd Fleet's 2nd Battlegroup.
