The Removal of IO's and the addition of RTO's

As an IO main, I'm sad to see my favorite class go, but I'm also happy to see that this game is moving forward and getting new things. Personally, I'm excited about the new RTO's. I think that's short for Radio Technical Operator? In any case, RTO's have to operate giant radios, which goes in theme with the whole, "Aliens = Vietnam War" allegory thing.

I bet RTO's will be targeted frequently, due to the giant backpacks and importance to the squad, which is fine by me. That's what I want to talk about though - the potential worth of the RTO to the squad.

What exactly are RTO's going to do? From what I've heard, they get to call in droppods connected to some tech-tree and calling in general supplies. Sounding a lot like Warcraft/Starcraft upgradable tech-trees to me. It's really fitting in with the whole MOBA theme I suppose.

With this description though, it feels like RTO's are basically just field CT's, something that I don't suppose we really need.

Since the RTO is not yet implemented, this is only speculation, but this raises so many questions.

What are the RTO's going to do besides lugging around a heavy backpack and calling in supplies? Do they also call in OB's and CAS strikes? Can't anybody do that with a rangefinger and the correct radio key? I don't suppose RTO's will also be picking up papers and reading them for intel :kappa:? How is this tech-tree going to work? Is medical research going to transform into Weapons R&D + Medical R&D? Are the OT's going to assist with Weapons R&D? Are there going to be new roles specifically for Weapons R&D/Tech-trees?

I guess what I'm getting at is that - for now - RTO's and the tech-tree seem very flimsy to me, and they're apparently supposed to replace DEFCON + IO's. - A system that has worked well (enough) since the recent updates. Is it really worth it to overhaul/remove a system that has worked so far?

Although I have to admit, this will skyrocket the roleplay potential of the game, having to follow around your dumbass SL and have him tug at your radio to yell at CIC to call an OB/Supplies/ETC on a certain location (Assuming this is how the RTO is meant to be played).

Like I said - I am happy to see this game is moving forward, but I do feel a little disappointment at the complete removal of a system (DEFCON), class (IO), and location (Computer Lab)

Removing all these for a glorified CT who calls in supplies?

Maybe I'm just being too harsh on a new idea. Maybe I'm a sucker for the status quo.

Granted, I know this is all super far into the future and are not going to be implemented anytime soon. I guess I just crave information and I wasn't satisfied with the town-hall Q&A.

I only want the removal of DEFCON and the addition of a Tech-Tree to be the best thing for CM-SS13.

Most importantly, I want to talk about this change. Do you think it'll be positive? Do you think it'll be negative? What do YOU think?

I want to clash ideas. I want somebody to reassure me that this change will be fine and it'll be okay without DEFCON and IO's - that it's all for the greater good.

I also want a hug. Maybe a massage too. Coffee sounds nice right about now.

I feel the same. IO is my favorite marine role and the recent DEFCON update made it even more amazing. I am not sure about this RTO thing and I don't see how it could be better than the current DEFCON system. I can understand the flaws of the current system such as the fact the whole marine platoon relies on several IO players, but still... I am not sure if the RTO will be a worthy replacement.

UPD: Also, happy birthday! (if this forum doesn't lie about it)

I did enjoy playing as Intelligence Officer for a period of time when I first started on CM, even before the DEFCON revamp where lowering DEFCON was much harder (e.g. no computer to share objective clues).

My favourite way of playing as an IO was usually as a lone ranger when you are not hanging out with a particular squad. Sometimes a willing marine or two would follow me. Every search for intel was a gamble with your life because most of the time IOs had to balance the pressure from CIC to get that DEFCON lowered as well as taking on the risk personally without combat support. It really felt like you were playing Alien Isolation by sneaking around but way better because you are playing against other players as runners and lurkers that will try to body block and cut you off from your escape path when you approach a chokepoint in your escape route.

There is no greater feeling than being stuck in the backlines alone, heart pounding in your ears, the only sound is the the data detector beeping, then suddenly - the MD pings! Your heart races as you race back to the nearest group of people using Move Orders ability, running as fast as you can before the runners or lurkers corner you and cut you off from your escape path. Sometimes you'll team up with other IOs, sometimes an engineer to repair an APC. Sometimes you'll have to make difficult choices like abandoning a quest to hunt for intel to drag your wounded escort via roller bed back to the LZ fending off runners with a shotgun you have in hand.

Playing intelligence officer taught me some great lessons. Like how to be self-reliant. Using your surroundings to maximise your chances of survival. Learning the importance of moving fast and not staying at the same spot for too long. The importance of always having an escape route back to the marines (aka safety). Which rooms to walk into and which rooms to avoid. Or even keeping calm trying to stay alive as long as possible alone knowing that death is near as the Spitter melts the door you welded as you hide a janitorial storeroom radioing for help. In a way, the way I played it was like a survivor except with a purpose and an MD and a light ranged weapon for better odds of survival.

To be fair, lately I have been playing less IO especially after I heard its plans for removal. I count myself as fortunate to be able to play as IO for most of early to mid 2020. So I did already have good memories playing as IO. I feel sad for the new players who will never get that chance to experience all that, or don't want to have that chance to feel all that.

I have no qualms about the introduction of RTO, in fact I look forward to it. But I have been always against the decision to eventually remove IO even when it was first proposed.

If you are reading this and have yet to play as IO, I highly recommend you play it as much as possible while you still can. In my opinion, once this role gets removed entirely, this game would have lost a highly underrated and unique aspect of CM-SS13 that doesn't exist anywhere else on SS13 or other games I've played so far.

    Also,

Where have you heard that they're removing the IO? Could you copy whatever announcement was made?

It was the Discord Town Hall, they were talking about removing curent gamemode and replacing it with control points (read: fix an atmos thing or infest an atmos thing and camp around it to get research points) and obviously IO goes out with it.

Thanks! I wish they'd post stuff like this on the Forums.

I'd have to know what they said on the discord first before I could make any judgements. Because I'm not on there, and I don't think I'll ever be on there.

They will remove headsets from marines and the only way to talk to ship is via RTO, this is done to fix lag and many of it comes from chat and as such radio as well

Just play survivor, it is more fun than IO.

I like playing as survivor (and to a greater extent survivor synth) too. But being IO is a different experience as mentioned before, and the chances of survival as compared to a survivor is much higher
