Yeah, trying to find one specific reasons for why LV is fucked is a fairly futile effort. It's pretty much universally agreed that despite being the most played map in CM, LV is in probably the roughest shape of any of the maps still in the game. But let me go down a couple reasons, most shamefully ripped from existing replies.

Fog - Probably the most annoying part of LV. Means that the gameplay is held up until at 12:40 at the very very earliest, and add another 10-20 minutes per gap. It's easy to spend an hour of gameplay without firing a single shot. And in the instance where there is actually a gap, it just becomes whichever marines rolled sniper or got iff gear vs the xenos boring enough to pick boiler. Some of the least interesting gameplay roles around, and they are the only ones who actually do much of anything. I have been around long enough to remember the days before fog existing on LV, and it still ended with marines fighting in the exact same fucking tiny caves they fight in now, which leads to the second thing.

Caves - Oh dear god the fucking caves. The caves are seemingly intentionally designed to be as un-fun to fight in, for xenos and marines. For marines, it has the same issue as the gaps. Only one or two marines without IFF can have gameplay, and the help/harm intent shuffle gets people killed constantly, and dragged off so far they will never be reco-ed. For the xenos, its the same deal. Only a few bugs can have any actual influence, so its just a matter of who got to t3s first and can either kill one or two marines before running off, or go back to lobbing boiler gas from the other side of the caves.

The fucking rest of it - Yeah most of the map is fine tbh. LZ2 is shite and we all know it, but the rest of the layout is perfectly serviceable as a jungle battleground. The idea of having defensible outposts connected by dangerous jungle is kinda neat, but it really just results in whoever is unlucky enough to get tackled dragged off deep into the jungle, or the bug that tries to kill em getting pb-ed into the shadow realm.

A full rework is a good idea, but I can't for the life of me think of someone masochistic enough to actually try to pull it off. Plus the current LV is so ingrained in CM, good fucking luck actually getting the reworked added in.
    - Squad Leader Cassandra 'Boston' Ellis (and overconfident CO)

    (Probably already dead)

    remember, we're open sourced now.

You can do all that stuff yourself
    Walter Meldron - Human
    WAM - Xeno
    Frank - Synthetic

It easier to yell at someone to do it

LV is about 4 years old, it's the original map we made for "new CM".
It's had slight improvements, changes, variations and overhauls over the years.. but in large has remained the same.

It's sort of a nostalgic map at this point, but ya I'd agree it was created for a different time and different gameplay.

idk man the xenos would get rolled if the caves were more open. The open area is the river, containers, tfort. In TF2 comp 6s what makes it interesting is that most of the map is fairly open until the last point where the team needs to show their skills at defending a choke or vice versa pushing a choke. It's not necessarily the most interesting part of either game but it's there to make sure that the winning side did something fairly difficult and the other team can still turn it around.

On a particularly horrendous LV round, dchat's biggest brains came up with the how to fix LV™ guide :

    Remove fog
Place domes and more structures on the beach
Make lake open air (why not?)
    Labs in the caves
Karl Karlsson, the man (and sometimes Captain)
    Maxwell, the synth
    Enhath'vot Guan-Dha, the predator
Also a feature Coder & CM's Maintainer Team Manager

    Timeline :
    Spoiler Spoiler:

[CENTER]Retired Synth councilman, forever a member of IO gang
