    That is the most truthful thing anyone said here. 100% agree with this. It's not so much a problem of admins or players (even tho they are both far from ideal) but the main reason we are loosing the battle for RP is simply because right now you don't need it to play the game. There is not a single mechanic in CM today that would force you to RP with people. The only talking you are ever required to do is giving orders as a command role, nothing more. Every other role can be done without a slightest player interaction. As a marine role you can get anything you want to from your squad prep and squad req. Medbay is stuffed so full of meds you could treat half a planet with it. Research has all the things they need coviniently in the labs already. Mess SGT has his own garden so he doesn't need to as research to grow him stuff. POs can install ship ubgrades themselves. There is just no mechanical dependency on anything. Deparments don't need anything from each other and are all self sufficient. Instead of having to go to the mess to eat when you are hungry you have food vendors on every corner. Paperwork is non existent because there is no feedback for it. Wheter it is a fax to HC or the Company 90% of the time its being ignored. These are all the things that are effectively removing all the need to even try and RP. You simply don't have any reasonable IC need to do it because it doens't accomplish anything.

    Wouldn't it be much better to have for example the IOs have to report their findings to the commander who would then send a fax report to HC and based on that the DEFCON would be raised? Have the POs put in a request for ship upgrades to engineering and have the engineers install it? Have research be able to actually affect the round by making better meds for the doctors who could start using them or invent special ammo that OTs can then manufacture but require exotic materials from the surface? Or better yet put a request in with the CL for some very high tech equipment required that he would then need to fax to the company and convince them to give him funding? Have spec kits at the round start kept in req or some special armory and have the specialists and SLs actually sit and talk who will take what?

    All of the above things are examples of gameplay mechanics and rules that would promote player interaction. And you need player interaction to be able to roleplay. And while yes the last step would be for the players themselves having to act in character while making these work (a slight nudge from the admins might help) at least they would have the oportunity and need to do so.

    then why not just give CO exclusive access to techweb, and if there's an XO but not CO within the first fifteen minutes of the round, XO gets techweb control?

    No need to delay its quite simple really. Have the XO have acess by default with the CO having the ability to take over should he want to. Surely its not so hard having one time command transfer for all the techweb functions.

    There has to be a system like that in place already in case XO doesn't wake up

    This is quite sad. As someone who was an avid roleplayer on this server before taking a long break, these older roles and the old standards will be missed.

    It's a shame.

    Personally, I am not a fan of the merge, I believe that merging CO/XO will remove the ability of the aCO to roleplay beyond standard operational leading.

    I think this will likely impact the CL role, make the CO/XO role more stressful (as well as forcing you rely on LTs more, who have a lower-bar than XO, leading a squad which has an SL with OW is one thing, leading an operation is another)

    I voiced my opinion on the CO council regarding this matter.

    Yes, well. We all know how much say the CO Council has in what happens with it's own Whitelist, don't we.
