In my near 2 years of playing on CM it's been incredibly hit or miss when it comes to roleplay. I don't expect it nor do I put the bar on others to reach my expectations. When I first got onto CM back in early 2019, I knew what I was getting into. I came from servers like Aurora and Baystation, my bar for RP was probably a bit higher than the usual 'new CM player' as it were I suppose.
To get back onto the point of roleplaying in CM. It's hard to really gauge what's even considered RP anymore. Stuff like "That's LRP" or "We need to be HRP" has been beaten and overused to the point it makes you roll your eyes. Whatever is roleplay is an entirely subjective thing. To be as literal as possible with the definition of 'roleplaying': "The acting out of the part of a particular person or character, for example as a technique in training or psychotherapy." To me, when it comes to roleplay, if you are playing a character that could reasonably exist in the designated universe you are playing in. You're roleplaying. Colonial Marines is a pretty grim universe what-all with Weyland Yutani Weston Yamanda being a mega-corporation that have the men, resources, and technology to go toe-to-toe with a legitimate government battalion as we can see when there is the occasional deathsquad round sent to deal with idiot marines. There's aliens that would turn your intestines into a nice party hat after putting a giant worm in your chest that will explode out of you. There's a violent anti-USMC group literally willing to suicide bomb themselves to kill you.
It was mentioned earlier, I think, but the Colonial Marines of the Falling Falcons are a pretty odd bunch. The 'Nobodies'. It's reasonable to expect that not every single marine is going to be the smartest, thought-provoking, or capable. What is NOT reasonable is people who don't try and running around saying "among us drip" or "haha gamers" and other stuff that is obviously OOC, and I feel that is what the crying shame of the lack of roleplay is. Of course, I totally understand why most people don't. It hurts to come to terms with it, but CM-SS13 is a TDM server through and through. You don't get mad at people on Squad for not roleplaying with you.
It is difficult to find good roleplay, I know as well as anyone else as I have tried my best and do my best to be the one people know can roleplay. It sucks but sometimes you just have to be the only one to do it when nobody else does. I'm rambling, I am aware, but that is how I feel on roleplay, at least here.
