Basic Questions & StoryWhat do you think is the job of a Commander? The Commander's task in a round is to set the direction that the operation is going. CO sets the Marines in a direction, the XO often ends up figuring out the finer details (working with the SOs to relay them to the marines), and the SLs carry them out via their Marines. None of this would work without a direction to go, even if that direction later turns out to be the wrong one.
Why do you want to be a Commanding Officer? I initially got into Command because I wanted more out of my experience. I noticed something about Charlie squad: that we never really had great coordination as a squad. I tried out SL, but I wasn't a big fan of having direct control of so many people. I find myself better at delegation and overwatch, so I tried SO. I had a good time, and I found that I wasn't so bad at it. But I noticed a lack of quick response times from my Executive Officers, since they're normally the ones in charge of the CIC. As a result, I became an XO main. Now, here I am at the precipice. This is the second half of the previous question, basically: I want to play CO because I feel that I can do an excellent job at effectively and quickly communicating relevant (and irrelevant) information to Marines, deciding on a pretty good course of action for most maps (I have several rounds as aCO), and I really want that drip. Oh my God, the drip.
What do you think you could contribute by being whitelisted? I feel like I do a good job at generally having great reaction speeds, and I'm good at keeping Marines in the loop about things such as 'where is the frontline' or 'where is the Queen' or 'what are we dying to right now.' I'm certainly not the greatest and I'm probably not even in the top 5 of people that've ever sat in that cushy center CIC seat, but I'm never one to turn down an opportunity to improve as a person. Also, I would look really cool groundside okay.
How will your Commanding Officer behave? Describe their character. Seoyeon is someone that's undergone a slow change from the person she used to be when she was a mere bug-hunting PFC. She started her career out as a PFC with a knack for killing like anyone else, but her occasional jests and occasional begging to ‘be in charge’ mostly came from a deep-set angst about a lack of control and a lack of confidence in her previous, civilian life. Over the course of time, as she rose up the ranks, she found actual skill for keeping track of a group of people and ‘getting these morons back on the road.’ As she had more responsibility handed to her, she was able to mature as a person--less agitated all the time, less of a delinquent. Nonetheless, she does still heavily enjoy deploying groundside if it makes sense to, and she extremely enjoys the weight of a Mateba in-hand.
Name and briefly describe your Commanding Officer's own ship. The USS Spectral Dragon is a rapid-response combat vessel in service with the United States Colonial Marine Corps as of 2190, assigned to the Third Fleet.
The Spectral Dragon is a unique case, one of the first of a line of ships produced by the Rising Empire of the Shining Sun, created in a shipyard in 2160 controlled by a typical skunkworks group with radical innovation on the brain. She was designed to be one of the most maneuverable vessels mankind had produced, boasting extremely powerful thrusters and a highly efficient fuel injection system. While she’s no slouch in terms of armament, her main tactic in active combat would simply be to be impossible to hit.
Unfortunately, the project would grind to a halt, as the RESS’ naval doctrine had changed away from roles the Dragon would be suitable for. On top of that, designers had been frustrated with an inability to balance the power draw between onboard shields and the particularly-demanding engines, older models of reactor unable to keep up. Most of the 100 ships that had been produced were scrapped, destroyed in live-fire exercises, or left to collect dust. With growing tensions in the United Americas leading to more and more handshakes with RESS government officials and W-Y suits, a few ships of the line were purchased out of purgatory to perform rapid response to insurrectionist threats. One of them would later end up in the hands of Seoyeon ‘Goose’ Choi.
Your story (potential topics listed below)
ExperienceHow experienced are you with the position of a Squad Leader (SL)? Ultimately, I’m far from the sheer amount of playtime others have accomplished, and I’m sure there’s more I can do when I’m put in the position. However, I’m very familiar firsthand and secondhand with the way Squad Leaders work and more importantly, what they’re here for. I don’t really ‘vibe’ with the playstyle of a Squad Leader, as I prefer to be in charge of the bigger picture, though I’m very comfortable with getting them to do stuff.
How experienced are you with the position of a Staff Officer (SO)? Very. I found myself heavily enjoying the position of Staff Officer, though aforementioned issues led me away from the role. I’ve started to get very familiar with the way certain SO characters are, and I have a great time working with most of them. I’m at the point where I can comfortably give advice to others on how to play the role.
How experienced are you with the position of a Department Head? This is, admittedly, a massive weak point in my application. I do not have any hours clocked on a Department Head (besides XO) in this year or the last. However, I will say that I have been around the block a good dozen times, and I’m familiar with how these roles function, and what they can bring to the table; especially when times get tough. I’m also very open to communicating with these players/characters and seeing what I could be doing better for them
How experienced are you with the position of the Executive Officer (XO)? This is my baby, essentially. I can’t claim to have hundreds of hours as XO or anything; however, I’ve become very familiar with the position over the course of playing it, and I’ve been called upon by a pretty good amount of COs to take charge of the operation (at this point, this is more comfortable to me than when the CO is there sometimes). I have learned the vital art of looking back on the times a round has ended up in us losing, and dissecting why that happened. I’ve been looking to CO players and some others on what I could be doing better in my time, and I’d like to claim I’ve become a reliable XO.
How familiar are you with Marine Law and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)? I have read over these pages plenty of times lately, though of course I couldn’t tell you how much a DASO charge is on command like the most dedicated MP players. I plan to put in a few hours this week as an MP, just to get some field experience. Nonetheless, I am familiar with the things one can/can’t do/allow as a CO or anyone else, and of course I’m capable of quickly referencing SOP/ML before I do something my brain registers as ‘possibly illegal, my dude.’
ScenariosWhen do you believe a Battlefield Execution should be used? List some examples of scenarios in which a battlefield execution would be correctly used. A battlefield execution is essentially a way to remove someone that’s a direct hazard or obstacle to the overall health of the operation, and a threat to your Command. Though, I believe it’s mostly for people that are doing this /knowingly/, or are so hilariously ignorant that it’s gumming up the gears. If you’re unable or for some reason unwilling to handle things in a regular judicial manner, a BE is right for you. For instance, if a Marine is going around shooting up the place and can’t be dealt with normally, or if the PO knowingly leaves behind 50 marines to die to xenomorphs out of spite.
Under what circumstances do you believe it is legal to pardon a prisoner? What are some examples of crimes you would pardon, and those you would not? Pardons, in my opinion, are for the purpose of ‘You’ve done a crime, but I’ve decided that you’re more valuable on the ground than in the brig.’ You’re putting your own ass on the line for somebody you trust so much that you’re basically jailbreaking them. However, this cannot be applied to capital crimes, and shouldn’t be applied to people that are pretty much literally griefing. If it’s a spec punching an IO at roundstart for the fun, oh my God why were they arrested anyway.
What is your routine after starting the round as either a Staff Officer or Executive Officer? Assume you joined round-start and are inside your quarters. I lower my tactical mask to around my neck, put my beret on instead of the uggo patrol cap, and grab a bottle of sake (as a visual prop) and a box of cigars (nice gift for the briefing). Both of these go in my bag, of course. I proceed to scroll up to check if there’s a CO. If yes, don’t fucking touch anything and say good morning to everyone. I might check how many Engineers each Squad has if it’s lower pop. If there isn’t, select a primary LZ and start making my moves. Announce when brief will be, draw up a plan, deal with anyone asking me to do stuff. After that, it’s just a normal round from there.
How would you handle insubordinate departments? State what you would do for each department if they were insubordinate. Medical:
This is hilariously unlikely unless it involves Research. Chances are they’re making moves to distribute drugs without permission, forcibly injecting people, or making corrupted xenos. Chances are, negotiating with the CMO will do it. If there is none, I’ll tell them off myself, then have the MP’s handle it if they don’t comply.
Engineering:
MT tribe are often very polite. If they aren’t, it’s simple enough to ring up the CE or send the MP’s after them. The only real job they’ll be doing after roundstart is fixing stuff or reloading the OB, and I have the skills to reload an OB on my own.
MPs:
Ahelp/fax HC, they legitimately aren’t allowed to do this to me. Regardless, I will talk to them while I do this and try to talk them down.
Requisitions:
Chances are it’s probably just a new CT being treated like shit. I’m willing to walk down there and have a chat with them myself if it’s needed, I can have the XO/SOs handle the CIC in the meantime. They deserve a good time.
CIC:
Typically threaten them with MPs and they’ll probably get back in line. This is assuming, of course, that they aren’t willing to just talk it out. If not, send them groundside and basically get rid of them. Sparse harm they can do down there.
How would you handle an understaffed CIC? What if you and the XO are the only available CIC crew? I’ve dealt with this before, honestly. It’s no real problem for me, I’ll just be unable to really hyperfocus on small things, I’ll have to be devoted to the big picture and moving all four squads rather than small things like ‘oh by the way [x] is separated a bit.’ If there’s only an XO, I’m also familiar with this situation. We’ll probably get along and establish a strong telekinetic link in order to facilitate reflexual reactions to situations. Except when one of us accidentally forgets to announce the OB. Nonetheless, I won’t be gallivanting on stuff like deploying groundside, XO needs the help.
What would you do if you were deployed and a marine told you they were going to desert the operation? Genuinely, the Mateba’s probably the best resort. MP’s can’t realistically get to them in time without probably dying to a Runner or something. If it’s over the radio, I’m fully willing to just ignore them and go handle something else; I have better things to worry about.
