    Literal CM NPC goodbye post

Hey fellas, I know not many people read these but I really like this game and spent a lot of time in it. It's all good if you guys meme me or rag on the post. I don't mind. I really enjoy CM and all the guys on it, I know this is nerdy but fuck it was a big part of my life man. It influenced me to do irl stuff that I didn't think I would ever do, good things you know.

I joined around 2018 when some friends would play it while they AFK'd Runescape. We all liked it because it was free but I really got into it. Once I found CM I knew like hey this is my bread and butter. I'll never forget being in a tight situation with a five man squad and accidently shooting my SL in the groin, just for him to shout "My dick man!" Shit like that was what felt like a welcome into the game. I would rotate between periods of heavy play with times of little to none due to IRL stuff but anytime I came back if I saw a familiar face it was always like seeing an old friend.

After the sseth tide things changed though. Lag was insane, anybody who asks for that time period back is crazy. I quit for a while, not because I was mad but more just not down to play with those conditions. The thing is though, anytime I wanted to boot up a game and relax on a Saturday CM was the only one that came to mind. I don't know what it is about this game but my brain craves the feeling. I think it's the combination of deep mechanics, tense situations, social elements, roleplay, and just the gameplay. No other game really ever compared once I started CM, this was really good for me though since back then rounds were super long so I'd only really play on the weekends and since all other games didn't tick the same boxes as CM they weren't even on my mind.

I'm not going to complain about changes or anything, I haven't added shit to this community except being an okay player and always being down to be social and chop it up so I respect the hell out of all the devs and admins doing work for free but stuff changed. It's inevitable but I kind of blame it on the ssethtide. Don't get me wrong, a ton of great players and developers that are way better than me came from it but the amount of people changed everything. Instead of there being a tight knit squad that looked out for eachother it was 40% single player people just going for kills, 40% just trying to figure out how the game worked, and the rest of us. There were still great teams and I had a lot of fun with people but fuck it was weird to see half the people just going for kills.

Once the game started to get to be sprint to meta spot and fight it kind of lost my interest. I missed power holdouts to keep TCOMs up, insane IO bodyguard moments where it felt like we were escaping death itself, all those moments man. It was great, but somewhere it changed. I think it was portable TCOMs, super short rounds, and just culture shift as result. Most briefings now are just all squads charge and all engineers stay at LZ to make cadelines. Nothing special at all and it's not the leaders fault. Even if they say "Alpha go set up power." Half the marines are playing single player and just run off chasing the dopamine hit when you PB a xeno. I did get to play a Winderhealer CO round which is like a Carson round now and it was fun, but it still felt flat. Getting killed is so forgiving now and the rounds ending so fast makes it so nothing really stands out like how it used to.

Another big part of it is round length. Since everyone just rushes the hive it's either a complete massacre for xenos or marines. Last time I played we won within like 40-50 minutes and I was like damn I really just prepped for and dicked around not really doing much for 25 minutes, and did a cycle of kill -> die -> revive -> repeat for the rest. It just didn't feel the same, going shipside to break up a long round and get surgery or anything like that. I'll never forget going shipside to get surgery and dicking around with the CL or the engies just because I missed the drop. It's all gone, you guys know it. And since rounds are so short people will play a ton back to back to back to try and capture that feeling. So the planet doesn't feel alien or new, it feels just like it did an hour ago last time you played it. There's no more nervousness since everyone knows where everything is. And there's no way to capture that feeling. When there was "mandatory first contact" it was like why, these players just played the same map an hour ago and know exactly where everything is. How are they supposed to pretend that didn't just happen and do the exact same over and over.

I feel like the way this server would've thrived for guys like me is if we focused on lag improvement first and just put all the rest of the dev energy into making maps that change every round like binding of isaac. Every round would be something different and would make everyone feel more tense because that's when the good moments happen. Either during or after super tense fights. Instead it seems like everything just focuses on making this a single player game. Even the cassettes just enhance this, put your music in and shoot bug for dopamine. It's lowkey sad. I read this quote about game dev and I think it applies to a lot of games I used to love like CM and Runescape.

"Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game, therefore, one of the responsibilities of designers is to protect the player from themselves.” -Soren Johnson and Sid Meier (Civ development interview)

To me that says it all, people have gotten so used to the game that everything is about the meta. When you just try to do what gets you kills all the actually fun stuff falls to the side. It sucks man, I loved the social element but it's gone and what is there feels empty and sometimes forced. I don't know what culture change happened but man it's weird. SS13 in general is completely changed to me, there's 18+ servers on top all day and at least half of CM is playing single player. It makes me kind of sad, the same feeling I had when I joined OSRS and saw clan wars and house parties are completely dead and everyone just silently gets XP for no reason. I don't know if it's chasing nostalgia or whatever but it's weird.

Honestly, if you read this whole thing thanks and I would get out now. SS13 is becoming like Runescape. Just another dopamine hit game. People talk about how cool it'd be if they made another 2018 server and split the population but to me it wouldn't work. Shit just look at 2007scape and runescape, you can't bring the past back no matter how hard you try. Sure the lag might be better but even then 2018 had bad lag with less people. And no matter what we all know exactly where the hive could be so what's the point in trying to capture a feeling that's gone.

Well, sorry for the cringe rambling goodbye. You guys were real as fuck, I still wonder about some of you and where you ended up. I hope it's somewhere good, this is my good ending.

    Good points and good luck!

Few observation, not just to this post, but in general.

    - if not Mandalore tide 5 years ago or SStide 2-3 years ago, there is a very good chance the player base would be dead. I'm sure devs/managers can just look at the stats to verify how many new players came and stayed after those. Deduct that, you might left with 40 players on high pop who might leave do to the server dying as we saw with other SS13 servers. So yeah, you got 1000 new players, 100-200 stayed for good, out of that certain % bad players. Still, if not those tides, I'm not sure where new players would come from and people always leaving the game for good. Look at Runescape, WoW, Guild wars. All zombie land with no to low players. It's not what it used to be.

    - Marines are unkillable, no perma damage, no surgery, medics get revival juice. No more risk, just shoot, die, get revived. All tension is lost, who cares about playing it like real.

    - IOs removed. Why. Everbody loved them to play or to escort. No fun allowed.

    - Metagaming/power gaming allowed. 6 shots from MOU under 1 second. Double shotty macros and the rest. This guy is right with that quote, it gets you the kill, but kills the fun for both. Yet it's allowed. Why.

    - Survivor doing anything but survive. Running faster than a warrior, starting with shotguns. Those are not survivor. Those are predators wanna bees. Totally flawed horrible change. Yet it's allowed.

With that, hope never dies. Rappling is in, cool new features added. But devs need to crack down on metagaming HARD.

    Sip.
