The Future of Tribes as a Game-Mode

Post by Feweh » 05 Jun 2017, 11:40

Just wanted to give people some quick information so you'll all leave me alone about tribes.

For starters, Tribes was initially just a quick change to Hunter-Games to give players something different. It ended up being really fun and different from pretty much anything anyone had played previously (similar to nations, but more freedom).

Going further we are EVENTUALLY going to make Tribes its own game-mode that will run on its own. However in the NEAR future it'll still be heavily admin run and influenced.
Soon will have an actual map for Tribes that'll incorporate the best of what makes Tribes fun.(Artouris will be making a jungle type map with heavy Predator related stuff)

I've decided that Tribes will probably be renamed and returned back to Hunter-Games simply because I want the over-all setting to follow much like the movie PREDATORS (2010 movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1424381/).
Like in the movie humans are kidnapped from Earth and dropped on a game-world created specifically by the predators to be hunted. Instead of it being a quick hunt... Humans survive on this game-world for a long time and are casually hunted by Predators and other inventions or beasts of the Predators choosing. This will create a plausible reason for humans to group together and form tribes together and trade among each-other. With this we also have a reason for having REALLY advance gear like guns and armor... but also it being in such short supply as it's generally distributed by Predators.

Now I've decided to shift to this theme for a pretty big reason.
Relevance to actual CM/Alien Lore. It doesn't make sense to make this an entirely unique game-mode that has no connection to the Aliens universe or Predator universe in some way, because then we'd basically be making a unique server at that point. Further-more since will return to a connection with the Predators and Aliens... we can actually use a lot of CM elements back into Hunter-Games/Tribes and it'll make sense.
For example, a normal hunter-games round could be going on and we could say that a WY Ship or USCM Ship detects a distress signal planet side from one of the human tribes and now we have WY involved.

Essentially, I want to do away with a lot of things that don't make sense and aren't connected to Predators. So another thing that's going to stop is "Gold Coins", instead currency should be based off something that the Predators (myself) would want or reward you for. That would be alien skins, human skins, trophies etc. So instead of finding Gold Coins, you'll find Xenos (as example) roaming the new map that players can team up, kill and then trade the alien skin for unique items/gear.

Finally something that'll end is pre-made settlements/tribes.
Something that is a lot of fun is self-creation, sure its easy to join a tribe thats already set up with all the gear you want... but it's not really fun and the only thing left for these players to do is to murder everyone since they have everything they already need. They'll be far less admin intervention as to leaders getting special gear and will have far less global announcements about wars/politics/trades etc. Generally, when announcements are made it'll be for big events or the Predators speaking to the entire game-world.

Going forward with weapons, will strike a balance between melee and guns. After numerous tests, I've realized that purely melee is actually really boring and not very CM like. However, giving everyone a sniper and 50 rounds of M4 ammo is a nightmare. This will also make sense for the setting of the game-world, as the predators do give humans weapons, just not in great supply... by the end of the movie you see the humans scavenging and making primitive weapons to fight.

For those curious, will keep the Colonist ERT but probably re-work it much like the PREDATORS movie. New players will lets say every 15 minutes be randomly chosen from the dead who "ready up" and they'll be parachuted in across the map much like in the movie. This will simulate predators capturing humans back on earth and dropping more of them into the game-world.

Next Tribes will probably only happen on the new map once it's done, so the time-frame could be days to weeks. Please stop asking me when tribes will be hosted, ill let everyone know.
Thoughts, ideas, suggestions etc down bellow.

I definitely like where this is going.
Only question is, would people spawn/parachute in with their own gear like in Predators? Or are they spawning in unarmed?

Probably with a knife only, since our playerbase is shit and will just bum-rush people/tribes they've been observing in deadchat.
I've seen this done at least 3 times now.

I have an idea that may be colossally stupid or smart.

To make Tribes more interesting, and as a way to aid Developers, I'd like to make a note that you said Predators hunt them and other inventions and beasts. I think that other forms of creatures that are made in development could be used in Tribes to act as a form of active testing. It makes the stuff that the humies fight random, and gives the devs data to work with. Even some more permanent additions that are only for Tribes would be cool, like the super-fast humanoid from the movie that engaged the protagonists in a small battle, after they find out about the Super Predators and escape from them.

I'm spitballing here, but the evolution of Tribes as a gamemode, and more particularly its setting, allows a lot of leeway for this stuff.

While not a terrible idea, it's not a very good one.
Regular rounds are more controlled with marines fully loaded, geared and with full teammates supporting them.
Hunter-Games is going to be a bunch of people who are allowed to kill eachother at any moment and possess maybe a bandage, spears and a handgun if they're lucky.

Not the ideal circumstances to test your xenos in.

I like the way Tribes appears to be heading. I think that making it more in line with the Movie will be a great thing - furthermore, allowing Predator whitelisted players the chance to play as Predators would be a good thing as well. Having the ability to "fight" Humans as they spawn and pick and choose Xenos to butcher as well.

In a perfect world, I'd even like to see the Xenos brought in as well at random times, with an alert when one or two spawn in... and a supply drop NEAR the place they're spawned in at. Imagine a Mature Hunter crawling around vents and murdering lone survivors. Nothing coordinated by a Queen, just more as obstacles for the survivors/Predators.

Liking where this is going! Maybe even allow a "job" system that allows players to ready up with different benefits.

Medics start with maybe an advanced first aid kit...

Doctors start with surgical tools.

Marines start with a pistol?

Specialists start with a Rifle?

Etc, etc.

Just random thoughts!

I like it.

I really didn't like the idea of minor and major tribes popping up before the round started, but I'm glad that's over.

A suggestion about tribes: Re-add the ability to change to unique radio frequencies. That way you can set up your tribe radio channel and not have to talk on common.

This sounds like a really fun and enjoyable gamemode.

Crafting should really be expanded on for Tribes, as you say you want to remove pre-made settlements. Maybe we could make spears and armor out of alien or human bone, sorta like how Lavaland works on /tg/ derivative servers.

It'd also be fun if there was a predator pyramid in the new tribes map. Lots of traps and the possibility of pissing off the xenos, but valuable rewards for those willing to take the risk.

This is an interesting evolution of tribes. I'm not particularly sad to see pre-made tribes go, as that was pretty weird in practice seeing everyone rush to the big facilities to grab all the spawned-in gear.

It'd be nice to see the predators more involved, too. They showed up a few times, but I'd like to see them able to express themselves better on a new map more suited to them, with more interesting traps they can use. Something like a pyramid would be really swell.

In regards of predators being more involved with this mode, would they still have their ranged weapons locked or would they be free to use them (with honour of course)?

Should be an interesting change and certainly a welcome one to see.

Probably full freedom, since Predators are getting absolutely wrecked lately no matter what they use.

Predator players in the Tribes rounds should just git gud cause I was one of the first Preds to be deployed in Tribes on the very first round, Became the Nexus Guardian, Sacked Med-Dome Tribe, Killed Two Predators in a honor duel, and killed the final human that survived the entire tribes rounds. Only Melee, no projectile weapons were allowed.

I mean, you sided and teamed up with a whole tribe. Imagine fighting ALL the tribes with no one to back you up. I doubt even the most robust pred could do that

When I assaulted the Med Dome, I was the spear head that broke into the flanks and made an opening, and against the two predators it was an honor duel for them both. No help needed. Also there are already times where I don't need back-up as a Pred to decimate whole squads so.... Nothing to really imagine there.

Again, honor duel is 1V1, even against a pred if you're a pred it won't be as hard. Especially with no knockouts. Also, you were the spearhead and you had the whole nexus tribe behind you. Let me give you a scenario you'll have in new tribes if you don't get all buddy buddy with a tribe

You go to hunt a guy, his whole tribe see's you and all of them shoot at you, wounding majorly or killing without you having the chance to close the distance, or
You have an honor duel with some guy, he KOs you and cuts off your head.

I've seen those happen many times in just REGULAR gameplay, no doubt they'll happen in tribes

Hell yeah. I opened this thread with great sadness, expecting Feweh to be like, "I'm sorry but I can't do this shit anymore, tribes is cancelled." Instead it's getting made to a new mode. Awesome.

I think part of the issue with predators in tribes is they seriously underestimate how deadly people with melee weapons are, especially the stronger ones, and ESPECIALLY especially in groups. Pretty much every predator death I saw was because of that head KO. They'd land a few hits, then get knocked unconscious and savagely beaten, completely incapable of fighting back. This happened to every predator in the same round, including an elder.

If no actual predators were to be available, could normal pepole from d-chat that you see fit get the role? Or is it still whitelisted ONLY even if no one can do it?

I believe this will be the best gamemode to test a new race...The Engineers!
They always have my attention somehow, plus it would be a very big leap in RP and for CM in general (But not just the so great muscular 9 feet man who will fuck yer shit up). Maybe, an engineer's ship saw what happened at the colony and want to talk to the ones they "Created" to see if they are fit to be alive or "Must go apeshit crazy on these lowlifes who can't establish peace", or maybe guide them to a better understanding of life and society so that they could become "Gentlemen" in the future. Stuff like that. I wonder if the devs are interested in the Engineer topic.
