Naming rules are becoming more RP-centric

Post by Rahlzel » 24 Jul 2015, 03:18

Since CM started as a medium-RP server we've been fairly relaxed about Marine names. However, as we evolve and learn and grow, we've come to understand roleplay controllable factors vs uncontrollable factors.

For example, the server needs donations in order to remain online. Therefore, we allow players to donate for some cool-looking gear so long as it's within the boundaries of a futuristic space genre. This is an uncontrollable factor. In other words, it's not exactly Aliens-universe or "canon", and thus slightly immersion-breaking, but it's a perfectly acceptable alternative to shutting down.

On the other hand, Marine names are a controllable factor. The rules regarding them can be as strict or as loose as we like without any affect on the server. Or, so we thought.

A reasonable scenario to us was something like a CMO named Gregory House who was excellent at his job, a great RP'er, and had his own unique story. The pop-culture name would be overlooked as amusing. However, as we gain in popularity, we're seeing more and more names like Barack Obama, Marcus Fenix, Vladimir Putin, Akino Himejima, etc. There's no consideration to individuality - it's just people picking names of famous people or pop-culture icons.

To put it bluntly, this going to end. Our Character Names rule is changing. Nicknames will still be allowed, however, pop-culture names from games, books, movies, or any other media/entertainment/society along with famous names are no longer allowed. Read the rule here.

While we're still on Stable, breaking this rule will start with a friendly heads-up that you should change your name (since a lot of players including donors will be non-compliant and not everyone reads the forums). Once we switch to Alpha, it becomes as strict as any other rule, up to and including a permaban for continuing to use a name that is against the rules. Donors - Apophis should be contacting you directly to have your name changed if your name is against the new rule (because getting your gear is directly tied to your character name). If you'd like to help, let him know now by sending him a forum PM.

Thank you.

Thank God for this. Even Yogstation (lightRP) had restrictions around popular names.

I'll miss things like Johnny Rico, but I won't miss things like Adolf Hitler. All in all seems like a good move though.

Ah well, Johnny Rico had a good run. Can't say I disagree with the rule though.

In a related note is there a way to change your forum username short of making a new profile?

Nope, I'd do it now though.

You could argue that Johnny Rico is a real name though, I have a friend name Jon Rico. We make starship trooper and bug references to him all the time though.

Yeah, I could make that argument and, to be honest, I rarely reference him as a character IC. But still I think it'd be better to go by my regular SS13 name which is Dayton Mann. I'll probably just keep my forum name the same though, as an homage to my favorite Sci-Fi movie.

I'd be willing to change your forum name manually if you know what you want, but I'd only want to do it once, so choose wisely. You should probably just use your Byond ID (assuming it's not "Johnny Rico").

I'll think it over and then send you a PM. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Is Jack Bright okay? I've been using that name and character appearance for over a year now, I'd be sad to see it go.

Even though I too am to be blamed, I still think this rule should've been implemented much sooner. Props to you Apop.

Seconded. No one even calls them by that.

I usually call people by their abbreviation byond keys like:
BYOND KEY: WHAT UNKNOWN CALLS THEM INSTEAD
Apophis: Apop
SASoperative: SAS/SASSY
OneOneThreeEight: Delta
TopHatPenguin: Penguin
UnknownMurder: UM/Unknown

You get the point.
However, we don't usually call them by their nickname for some reason we use either first name or last name and we are disgusted by having to type out whole thing. Honestly, just because you have a nickname doesn't make you special. It just really does make you stupid, I know I putted a nickname on myself. It was funny at first, but then, it became stupid.

I'm up for removal of nickname. It really stretches the log.
