How else is the gambling industry supposed to profit off impulsive kids?

Why don't you think about them for a change?

It's just really gotten out of hand. I remember when games came with expacs, not dlc and loot boxes. I feel old, and also yeah, it's absurd that you can drop truckloads of money and never get the thing you want/need.

Not terribly robust, but will give runners bananas.

I personally don't see an issue with it. Separating idiots from their money is how people make money and if someone wants to spend all of their money on lootboxes why stop them?

You don't see an issue with targeting children with gambling? Something that is illegal to do unless you're 18+?

Most games with gambling that I've come across are 18+ besides for overwatch.

It's also not really proper gambling, you're paying for a product and you get a product back regardless of whether or not you like it. What's the difference between that and just buying a skin? If it was gambling you'd have the opportunity to get nothing in return for your cash and that'd be a bit shitty.

In the vast majority of cases you essentially DO get nothing in return for your money. I'll use CSGO for my example since it's what I'm most familiar with but the vast majority of things you get in return are worth less than 10 cents at the cost of a $2.50 buy in. While not literally worthless, it is functionally worthless. Buying specific skins is much different because you're paying for a produce you know that you want instead of the chance of getting what you want.

Functionally useless but based on arbitrary terms. The economy of skins and what-not are entirely artificial and they have no real use or value outside of the economy of the game, you're essentially just buying a random picture that some people want more of and some people don't want but you are still getting a return.

I do see your point though and I think that marketing specifically to children is a bit morally dubious, but in most cases the games are 18+ like with CSGO or the new CODs (which I think have lockboxes or somethin')

I would not be surprised if opening loot boxes released dopamine in the brain.

Its your choice if you will or wont buy it. Same goes with your parents, will they give you money for it or will they not.

what happened to maple story-esque point shops where you can spend IRL money on what you actually want, instead of spamming 50 crates to never get what you want that is 100x more expensive?????

It basically is, but without the legislation and regulations that apply to gambling.

On this, it seems as if the free market's already brought down the hammer on EA for this. It's clear that this practice will be rather heavily discouraged inside of triple A games, which is where most of this controversy is coming from.

Quite frankly, I really don't want the government involved in my hobby because they fuck everything up royally and without fail. Source: Net neutrality, tax code, managing their own payouts, et cetera ad infinitum.

this

no one wants to buy EA's shit right now just from their massive PR fuck up alone, not to mention the new battlefield is COMPLETELY dependent on the lootbox system to work; its literally woven into the games core gameplay

the smarter gamers will realize this and back off, and a lot of said smarter gamers are actually some of the best game reviewers in the industry (dunkey, angry joe, etc), hence normal people will also follow their example

sure it won't stop everyone, but thats a significant enough of a dip that even disney is starting to tell EA to stop fucking them over

no need for the government to come in

Under no circumstances should we be trying to get the government involved in gaming. This is just a foot in the door excuse that leads to the Jack Thompsons of the world getting their way. It's even using the exact "think of the children" shit they browbeat us with in the 90s over violence and bad words in games.

There are many things that need regulating because the free market failing to stop damaging behavior can cause massive socioeconomic problems, and thus the positives can outweight the negatives. Pixels on a screen is not one of those things.
