Im good at managing 20-30 dwarfs at best, but when you get more then that, it becomes a hassle to manage them, hence I just make it a survival of the fittest and throw my dwarfs through a gauntlet goblins, zombies, and the biome I am in (either tundra or evil to cut down on their numbers).

Works for me.
Just equip all your useless dwarfs witch copper swords (Or if you´re mercifull, a full gear of copper/iron) and put them all to fight against sieges/ambushes/titans/forgotten beasts. If they dont get killed in the first wave, they will git gud and you will have a powerfull army.

Wanted to challenge myself, chose to deploy in a winter corrupt biome (GLORY TO THE MONTAINHOME) first expedition encounters a werewolf that massacres all of them. I don't want to give up, make a second expedition, make them all warriors and masters of combat, send them, they put up a fucking legendary fight against this beast, blinding it, cutting one of its arms off, attacking its kidneys. They too die, werewolf becomes legendary, final expedition lasts about one minute, I abandon the site to Hielhempherder the Legendary Werewolf.

Also when I was first starting I was on an ocean beach, dug a tunnel into the ground and began offloading our wagon... as everyone's walking down the hallway into home one of the dwarves goes fucking berzerk because no booze, picks up a barrel and CHUCKS IT down the only hallway into the base, killing every last dwarf I had save for her crazy ass.

Finally, had a mega fortress with a giant wall around it I was building, and an entrance with giant ballistae shooting down it constantly with drawbridges and shit. Had a master engraver who was obsessed with buckets, and pictures of buckets within buckets. That's why it was a surprise when a bronze golem came and leapt through the only crack in my wall, killing everyone on the surface. I lock the engraver into the lower sections of the fortress where he would spend the rest of his days fighting cave spiders and engraving the walls with pictures of bronze collosi with buckets.

Running the Succubus mod right now. Super fort, plagued by the random reappearance of a wereboard infection. Team killed him but half got infected, two survived to turn and only one of the original infected live and he's in a cage behind a forbidden door. But every so often one still goes into that room and gets infected. I've put cage traps outside and inside my infirmiry just to hope to catch them when they turn.

I'm off-and-on on dwarf fortress. My last fort was going well with a decently sized and equipped military with a few axelords sprinkled in and I was working on luxuries like pump stacks and a proper water cistern for the hospital (the river froze during the winter, two legendary miners died in its construction) when a wererabbit arrived. It tore through my military like tissue paper and all of my citizens were partying in the tavern and didn't manage to pull the lever to close the main gate and force the wererabbit to use the trapped hallway in time. No survivors.

Learning is easy, just generate a world with a lot of minerals and start your fort on an island somewhere with no aquifer. You won't have to worry about military if no one can reach you to invade. Then, dig a hole in the dirt and begin experimenting. One of my favourite forts was one where I did have an aquifer and because I couldn't figure out how to pierce it I ended up setting up an elaborate clothesmaking industry to export masterwork socks instead of my go-to (metal trap components). That one ended up getting raided by elves and ended there, with no military to protect the craftsdwarfs.

It's pretty hard, and you need to be familiar with ASCII's in general first. A good one I'd suggest is Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. Survival rouglike ASCII game that is apocalyptic, and really really fun. It can get you used to using a billion hotkeys and ASCII menu's ect. Also it's super fun

I remember making a boat that drove over 3000MPH with like 3 engines. When I crashed I flew about 5 'map' tile away through several trees wearing power armour. Fun Times

Building an underground base is pretty dope I usually do it. Make sure to have a steady food income and set up some workshops. You also want to start off in more tame areas as you're starting new. Losing is also pretty fun so yeah. Try not to start in an area with an aquifer they'll flood your tunnels and etc.

Love Rimworld. I can't get into dwarf fortress. Just too complex for me. Love watching let's plays or twitch streams though. Plus, friend plays it. Loves making car towers that when you open, a flood of hungry cats come out to kill whatever opened it

Dwarf fortres adventure mode was strange and interesting for me. Once I rushed a big goblins castle and was killed by virus.

I second this. I played drawf fortress successfully before finding out about C:DDA, but it wasn't until after trying it out did I fully understand the ASCII world thanks to it's easily-accessible modern setting with many commonly familiar items, weapons, and drugs.

IT ALSO HAS DRIVABLE VEHICLES AND TONS OF AWESOME MODS! TRY IT OUT!
(Don't be afraid of the experimental builds, by the way. They have the most content and very rarely have issues, though I think they may corrupt saves sometimes)

If you want my hint for getting into Dwarf Fortress immediately, however, try this:
  1. Go into to wherever you have DF installed, and find df_XX_XX_win\data\init (replace the X's and OS with your intall version, latest release is 0.43.05, so that would be df_43_05_win\data\init on windows).
  2. Find the d_init.txt file (not to hard, i's one of the few in the folder), and open it.
  3. Find "[INVADERS:YES]" and change the "YES" to "NO"
  4. Save that file, babeh.
This game can be hard enough to learn, and you may find yourself attached to certain dwarves you aren't ready to lose to !!!FUN!!!

With these steps taken, all werebeasts, titans, megabeasts, and armies will be unable to invade your fort and kill all your dudes. Keep in mind that this wont stop vampires, werebeast migrants/visitors, dangerous animals, and HFS, along with any psychological or societal issues dwarves might develop.
