Thing is I tend to enjoy being drone because if I get a chance I can be a nightmare with hugger combat, so much so if I go carrier and people see me in action they'll focus fire on me over most other threats simply because I've walked into the middle of a group of marines and slapped a facehugger on two or three before casually walking back to my sisters. Lurkers are really just annoying in general because the queen can say "don't mass evolve to runner/lurker" and people will ignore her, then just go off and annoy the marines before dying. Sentnels, Spitters, Defenders, and Warriors tend to be more cautious than Runners and Lurkers from my experience as well, so they survive a bit longer.

Just the fact that yesterday, there was a hive with 10 runners out of 15 or 16 xenos should tell you that people going for lurker is the main reason xenos lose at this point.

I wish that you can turn off the ability to evolve into a certain caste if you want, so the hive doesn't get spammed with runners, lurkers, or a few useless Praes that think they're still useful for anything outside of pheromones and sticky spit.

Right now, because there's nothing physically stopping them from evolving to Runner, and then to Lurker (at least you can devolve, but then you just risk them going AFK or yolo'ing into the marines); you just have to hope that they listen to you.

I blame the unbalanced casts, Because warriors are god awful, defenders and really not that strong, runners are too spongy and the pounds, oh lord it sucks major balls. So the most reasonable cast would be hunter, and is also most enjoyable. You persuade people to play sentinals for example which is an enjoyable cast as well, but hunters now are the top wanted tier because of it's the most satisfactory. It all comes down to what you enjoy because this is a game after all, if you make warriors bad and you die a lot by playing them you won't have fun thusly wont go for them anymore and I think by time now the xeno players know that warriors are bad, and runners are death traps.
