New to Pixelart, any tips?

Post by Frans_Feiffer » 23 Aug 2018, 19:56

Alrighty boyos.

For quite a bit now, i’ve been curious into what goes into making Pixel art. Due to some awesome art i’ve seen on the forums, i’ve wanted to try my hand at it but i’m kinda (very) bald at it. Because of this, I was curious if any of you awesome dudes may have tips for a baldie such as I. Anything is appreciated, as it’s probably better then what I know right now, so feel free to comment suggestions or tips you may have. As a way to repay you guy’s If I can figure it out, I’ll start taking requests so I can work on it and put said tips to use.

Thank you all, and have a good one!

First of all, welcome to the club. I don't know if I have the best advice since I'm still learning but I can give you some tips. First, read up on some art basics, they apply to all styles. Second, look up some pixel art and traditional art pieces to get some ideas. Third, practice. In my opinion art doesn't seem that hard but it takes some commitment and a lot of practice. Here's some links I have on hand that helped me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdWsNp5 ... e=youtu.be

http://www.dinofarmgames.com/the-art-ba ... -spriting/

https://thevirtualinstructor.com/artfundamentals.html

I've taken little things here and there from many other places and people. The best way to learn is just start and get it out there, no matter how bad it is. Let me know if you get anything done. Good luck and remember to have fun. :thumbup:

Pixel art is a tough cookie because there are SO many different styles of pixel art, my advice would be to pick as style to begin with and practice it a bunch, using references quite often helps to begin with and a really REALLY important aspect of many pixel art styles is shading, shading is what makes Good art Excellent art

I personally started with ss13 sprites for my art then a situation where i lost over like 60 sprites due to my computer dying i gave up on it, picked it back up with a new style about a year back.

Always happy to see more people pick up the art and im excited to see your style!

Thanks! One of the beauties of art is that mo matter how good you get, there’s still new things to try, and new things to learn. Whether it be new styles, techniques, etc etc. at the moment I do a lot of Drafting for classes, as well as some drawing here and there. But pixel art for a while now has caught my Interest and it wasn’t until now I thought about doing it seriously. Thank you though for you tips, as well as the links, and the second I got anything made i’ll be sure to show ya!

Aye, I see what you mean. Even in other arts, shading always gets me, but it definitely shows a difference in skill between someone who uses shading, and someone who doesn’t. Thank you though for your tips, as i’ll be sure to take them into account. If i get anything done, which I should pretty soon, i’ll be sure to post it here, hah.

Welp, at last I got to doing some art. It's just a view of the Shoulders and up, but I'm happy with the results as it's the second thing I've really ever done, hah. I can see where it could use some work though. Shading was the biggest issue in my opinion, as I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to shade the face, and while I think it looks nice, I'm not sure whether the way I shaded the clothes is how it should be or not. asides from that though, here it is;

if anyone has any criticisms, I would be more then happy to hear ya out, as it helps me get better at this whole Pixel art stuff. And just as a sidenote, I don't think I did it right for the image, so it should just be a link. Whenever I try adding an image it just say's this forums Quota has been meet, and pops up with an error thing. So unsure how to get those to work at the moment, hah.

(There we go. Upon uploading, the link wasn't there, so adding it in a edit here just in case. I'm pretty much a flop at this whole thing right now, lol.)

I find that patience is something that goes hand in hand with most hobbies. Though that's a good thing, as practice makes perfect, and if you're willing to put the time in, you'll be met with some pretty nice results after enough time banging your head against a wall.

Make the bright parts dark and I think it'll be a good start. Good luck on your journey man.
