Predators on the Ice Colony

Post by Monoo » 11 Dec 2016, 22:23

Wanted to open a discussion thread on this, because... oh, man. There's a lot of stuff that's different.

Some of my thoughts:

- Predators, despite having all their gear on, can still take small amounts of cold damage. I'll get the cold indicator every now and again and lose health because of it. Not that this is a problem... it's kind of immersive, and stocking your lodge with heaters is a nice touch, but I wanted to know if it's intentional.

- Speaking of lodges, choosing a lodge on this map is extremely difficult. There's no places to mine out a small hole like on Lazarus, since picks don't work on ice walls or frozen rocks. Most of the suitable buildings are situated in places where marines and xenos can both come into regular contact with them, and they're also hard to seal up well. The only feasible lodge I found was the ship underground in the Wey-Yu dig site, and even then it was discovered several times. Lazarus has large sections of the map that people don't go to often, like the western jungle or the northwestern caves, where lodges can be made and safely hidden. Shiva's Snowball has few to none of those.

- The snow makes us blend in a LOT better while stealthed, which is really nice. Seriously. Watching marines and xenos is almost too easy.

- We should probably have some way to pry doors open, since finding lodge-building tools and moving around at the start is a bear before the marines arrive and open everything up.

- We also can't communicate on our casters before the marines set up the comm relay... this is odd to me, as the Vox casters in other media have always seemed to function independently of other radio sources. It's also massively inconvenient for scouting out a lodge, as you have no way to relay your location to your fellow predators.

- Most of the environment in the frozen ship is not able to be interacted with. Like I said, I wanted to open some of the airlocks for the lodge, and I couldn't even open the electrical panels. The window glass was fake and wouldn't break, either.

You know, wristblades have been able to pry open doors for a long time. Most of the doors in the buried ship are fake, though. Can't actually open them.

Other than that, the cold isn't that bad, with only some minor damage, and it's to be expected with how bare Predators are, even with their armour on. Vox casters may be very hard to change, for little benefit, though.

Please don't build your lodge right next to the marine landing site. I didn't think this was a thing that needed to be said, but apparently it is.

I find it hard to find supplies to make a proper lodge, obviously not a lodge from scratch but supplies or materials in general its tough. Not like LV Map, in which you can easily get materials if you get them at the right time. Thing is placing traps, traps are very visible, in which can't really trick anybody unless hidden under an item of course.

If traps were un-acidable it wouldn't matter how visible they were for a lodge. In fact, it'd be better if they were visible.
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

It doesn't stop Marines from just picking them up, though, and probably using them against Xenos.

I haven't played yet, but from what I've been spectating, during Ice Colony the only reliable way to set a lodge in an unexplored place is by using a shovel and lots of snow

Which is a bit meta, yeah? Unlike most of the predator gear, which is pretty much "stick 'em with the pointy end" perhaps only preds should understand the traps?

It's completely allowed, actually.

Like Bolter has said, yeah pretty much is allowed the fact traps do not actually do any damage, it only stuns. As well the mechanics for the predator trap is basically a bear trap, in which can be taken off and etc.

Small note to be aware of, your traps are pred tech, don't give them away freely either.
I actually sometimes almost die trying to retrieve traps that were left around stupidly on LV/Ice.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.
