Edgelord Commander Whitelist Application

Post by Edgelord » 11 Dec 2016, 00:26

Byond ID:

Edgelord

Player name you use the most:

Dayton Mann

Make a list of links to all of your applications and (job)ban appeals, including whitelist and staff apps, within the last year. Also, provide "Ban reason; Verdict" beside each (job)ban link:

N/A (was appointed Mentor by Feweh)

Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines?

Yes

Why should you be whitelisted?

I'm glad you asked, whitelist template. I think that I should be whitelisted for several reasons. For one, I am a very active member of this community. I have sunk about two years into this server and think the community here (despite the salt) is one of the best ones I've ever been a part of and I think it's fair to say I have contributed a decent amount over that time and have learned what's fun and what isn't.

Additionally, I think I'd be a good fit for CO because A) I very much enjoy to roleplay and B) While I'm not the best Commander I'm a very analytical player, I always try and see what went wrong and what went right so I can improve for the next time. I think that, winning or losing, it's all about the experience and the people who are the most fun to play with are those who really contribute to the experience regardless of the current situation.

tl:dr I'm not the worst upboat me pls.

A long time player is acting insubordinate, he is good at his job (SL) but he is unruly and acting out. Towards the 1/4 of the round he leads a mutiny against you. How do you try to defuse the mutiny while retaining command or, failing that, be in a position of high importance?

I first offer to parley with this player, see if a one-on-one can dispel the grievances. If the player refuses to open a dialogue I will dispatch MPs to deal with the situation if it is not too large-scale. If I know the mutineers are violent I will make a call-to-arms of loyal marines calling for the suppression of the mutiny.

Preferably this would all be handled non-violently. A player's reputation wouldn't have much sway with me if they were trying to use it to gain advantages over other marines.

And if the SL is successful in taking over, what do you to secure yourself a position of power in the new command?

Well in a majority of the mutinies I've seen the CO is usually imprisoned or dead. I would act in whatever way seems natural for a proud officer of the USCM to act. Though it would take a desperate situation for me to surrender to mutineers. I would do whatever seems best for the ship at the time.

I've always been a big fan of Dayton. I know him personally, so I can personally vouch for his credibility.

Question:

What do you think you do as the commander.

That was an actual question, what do you do as the commander.

Oh it seemed like a joke.

It was so vague I assumed it was a joke. Assuming a full staff I leave squad communication to the BOs and XO as to not try and do everything and make sure everyone has something to do. If there's troubles on the ship I usually dispatch the XO to solve them personally. Additionally, I do periodic rounds on the ship to see that everything is going as planned. I do regular checkins with the different departments to ensure cohesion. If any bridge staff are not available I either fill in the gaps or assign someone else to. I usually request 15 minute checkins from my Overwatch officers.

During boarding procedures I grab the smartgun and fight with the men. If you're wondering about what orders I give it varies depending on situation and squad sizes. Generally I have both LZs guarded, one with an FOB (usually LZ2) power duty and patrolling. After power is operational I usually reassign them to go where they are needed and if there is no pressing threat they patrol as well. From then I play it by ear. Again this varies from round to round.

While I should have asked sooner before voting, it probably wouldn't hurt to ask now, to see if I'm going to get the kind of CO I prefer over a CO I learned to dislike.

So, say the FoB is under heavy attack, right? Lotta aliens, marines are wetting themselves but still holding out. They are near a vital LZ and you already lost your other LZ due to not having marines defending it. Things seem bleak, but you should still have marines waking up from cyro.

In a situation most dire, what is a CO like you to do?

+1 for a CO who seems to know that commanding involves managing subordinates rather than single-handedly running into combat and robusting to prove you're a "lead from the front, never retreat" idiot while neglecting cargo, medical, shuttles, etc.

Wew, finally have time to answer this.

This is an interesting question which could have a lot of variables in this situation but I'll just speak from experience.

Usually in situations like this I will have one or two squad leaders. Generally if they're alive at this point it means that I can rely on them to some degree so I usually try and reorganize leadership to be under them.

As for the hammered FOB I can speak about this with confidence: it's all about the fortifications. Anyone who knows me knows that I spent a majority of my time as a Squad Engineer. And while I find myself a bit turned off from the role (at least for now) one frustration is forever burned into my memory: ABANDONING FULLY FORTIFIED FOBS. I would sometimes spend entire rounds procuring metal and plasteel, setting up barricades and replacing glass with girders, only to have some CO have 20 or so marines retreat. Hell I've flat out refused those orders out of frustration with how out of touch command was.

Having picked up CO since then, I find myself more hesitant to ignore direct orders, but the sentiment remains: A retreat should not be issued if the fortifications hold and there are able men and women to hold it. I apologize if this is a long-winded answer to your question but I think the context is important for this situation. If my marines are being hammered in the base but the barricades and structural integrity of the base as a whole are holding, then I will not order a retreat. I will do my best to motivate them with a rousing speech (I think I'm not bad at being inspirational as I rather enjoy writing) and keep the reinforcements coming but other than that I will trust in the strength of my troopers.

If fortifications are broken, however, I will seek counsel from my SLs on the ground. Marines win when they fight smart, and crushers and boilers have a way of ripping through marines out of cover. Both in and out of character, I refuse to sacrifice men if I know their lines will be broken. I believe in their strength but when you get your commission idealism takes the backseat to pragmatism.

Ah yes, I myself had the displeasure of having perfectly good defenses be abandoned due to command's fear of being overrun, despite the fact that surrendering the planet is like shooting yourself in the foot and calling it a wise tactical decision.

To me, a good CO is willing to do everything to hold a planet. Supplies, manpower, words of encouragement, whatever it takes to keep hold of the planet. 60 marines are useless on the sully (mainly because admins like to punish this kind of behavior), so put all that fresh meat to good use holding the line.

We don't build FoBs for nothing, after all.

This is good enough for me vote.

Thanks! But just as a last comment I would consider fighting to the last man on the planet if it wasn't meta-knowledge to know that the xenos can board the Sully ;P

Even without the knowledge, losing an LZ to hostile wildlife is dreadful, and if you lose all your connections to the planet, your operation grinds to a halt.

That is why when I go CO, I use everything I got to ensure that we retain that flow of troops and supplies, because once you lose the planet, you're boned... Makes me wish that the dropship wasn't so stubborn..

Day.....ton.....Mann...., what can I say about you my good sir. If I were to be honest I never really seen you as a CO, I mean you make a kick as BO, Engineer, or Standard. But when it comes to those solid leadership roles, I have never noticed you. You're as competent as they come, you know that game, and you're an old time player so I'll keep my vote reserved for now until I see you in action as a CO or XO.

That's fair, I don't have as much time logged as CO, mainly because of work, but I do have plenty of XO experience and the times I have been CO it's been a pretty good experience. I feel that I have a good grasp of what people really respond well to, and I'm going to keep applying that to try and create a positive experience for everyone involved.

Also I appreciate the praise, coming from you that means a lot.
