Harry Bickerson - Commander Application

Post by Terminutter » 07 Jul 2017, 12:53

Byond ID:
  • Terminutter

Player name you use the most:
  • Harry Bickerson

Make a list of links to all of your applications and (job)ban appeals, including whitelist and staff apps, within the last year. Also, provide "Ban reason; Verdict" beside each (job)ban link:

  • None

Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines?
  • Of course, everyone is bound by the guidelines, just like everyone must obey the Iron Will of Marine Law, lest they be the target of divine judgement

Why should you be whitelisted?

While currently playing Command Staff, such as XO or SOs:
  • I believe that I am good at communication, ensuring that everyone is up to date.
  • I typically delegate a lot, giving the grand picture that I want as a department head, then expecting my subordinates to obey to the best of their ability. I feel this keeps people involved, and doesn't undermine others. When I do give direct orders, I expect them to be obeyed, but I try to keep this to a relative minimum. This does mean that I communicate with departments like medical and the MPs, to ensure that I know what they are doing, and what is going to interest them.
  • I like a bit of Arr Pee, and am willing to chat to people, and indulge certain individuals perverse paperwork fantasies.
  • I try to praise people who genuinely do well, rather than just complaining about the baldies.
  • I do my best to be reasonable, and to hold firm to the rule of "Do not be a dick".

As a Commander:
  • I would aim to be a macro level planner, rather than micromanaging - I tell my XO, SO or SLs what to do, which they then accomplish in their own ways. I won't be bossing individuals around.
  • I aim to engage everyone, even the less involved parties - I will try to find things for MTs or the researcher to do, and will humour parties like the CL. This extends to the Marines - I won't say "Delta, you live in the FOB forever", because that is dull as hell for them. I will try to rotate Marines in duty and base, if needed.
  • I will be firm, but keep an open mind if it will expand the game. I won't always playing to win, so much as to make an enjoyable game. If there are 5 marines and me holed up on the Almayer, far from the SD, and hordes of hostiles, I am not going to bolt up for 2 hours, we will lead an honourable charge, for the glory of the USCM. Conversely, if I have overwhelming forces, I am not going to evac the planet because two people stubbed their toes, we are going to push.
  • My hair may be short, but it is thick and bushy.

However...
  • I suck at combat, I am very much a roleplayer more than a robust kill-o-machine 3000.

For the attentions of the Weyland-Yutani Regional Executive Director Only
Unauthorised distribution is an offense under W-Y Code of Conduct subsection X3-72, punishable by immediate termination or reassignment.
Regarding W-Y Potential Asset:
  • USCM Officer Harry Bickerson
Proposal:
  • It is suggested that this individual will serve W-Y most admirably as Commanding Officer on the USS Almayer, a newly constructed spacecraft under the flag of the USMC.
Said individual has been shown to prove amenable to W-Y influence while operating under other Officers on <REDACTED>.
Bickerson's strictly by-the-book tendency shown so far, as well as his obedience to hierarchy means that he will likely be an effective asset in the field should any conflicts arise, though he will not be open to bribery.
However, his hard line tendency to obey the book cannot be guaranteed to continue, given his loyalty to the USCM.
  • If necessary, material regarding <REDACTED> can be used to help influence the subject into ensuring W-Y's best interests are followed.
Suggested Action:
  • Petition USCM through <REDACTED> for the promotion of Lt CDR Bickerson to CO Bickerson, using <REDACTED> to help with influencing the appropriate parties. A donation to <REDACTED> may help
Signed:
  • Mr Holden Briggs - Weyland Yutani Liaison Service Manager, LV-513 Sector.

Stellar app. Wonder where you got the idea for this format... :^)

I have to say that I've only really seen you play since last week or so, though I don't remember anything negative. Do you just play in lowpop timezones or do you have other characters?

Cheers on the app.
I haven't really played much over the last month, just recently got back into it last week after a little break, but usually play in the early evening (in the UK), or around noon (if off work)
I used to go as Harry "Turtle" Bickerson if that helps, and have been popped as survivor a fair bit recently (forget to turn it off). I also tend to go MP (instant "all the -1"s), SO and similar "RP" roles, so marines who go planetside tend not to see me.

Briefing either coming up over the next hour, or in the next 16 hours, as I have a nice decent shift at work.

Prior to the briefing, (assuming I start at roundstart, full crew), I am going to ask my SLs to sound off, and my SOs to claim a squad and give me the composition of the squads, as this will determine initial squad assignments.
My template (and very conservative, won't be too adventurous for it) briefing is going to be something like this:

Marines, at ease. Take a seat, time for a sitrep.
We are currently in high orbit over planet LV-624. A jungle planet, humid, swampy, currently staked by Weyland-Yutani, with a small colony present planetside.
We have recieved a distress signal from said colony. Attempts to patch into the colonies information system have failed, and as such, we have no knowledge of what is on down there.
My bet is that it's likely a regular pirate situation, or merc raids, though we cannot rule out natural disaster or plague. As such, I am sending you down armed up for a skirmish, and expect you to behave as conducts a USCM marine.

Alpha, you are on initial recon of the drop site of the Alamo, I expect you to scour the area immediately around the dropship, taking good care of the Nexus and the Cargo area by it. Establish an FOB, and I will give further orders from there.
Bravo, you are to take the Nomandy, and are to proceed down to Engineering, where you are to check that power is up, there has to be a reason for the comms blackout. Secure it, turn it on, then join up with Alpha.
Charlie, Delta, you are to start probing - I want every pod cleared, and colonists located and extracted, so that we can get some more intel on this. Charlie is to take the Alamo, Delta is to take the Normandy.

After the initial drops, the Alamo is to become the primary troop transport, while the Normandy is to stand by at all times for gun runs and support, in the case of raiders. The Almayer is also available with heavy support.
Medical is prepped for a mass casualty situation, and requisitions is ready to supply you with more gear if needed.

All marines, I want trigger discipline enforced - don't shoot your comrades, and make sure you don't plug a colonist, or you are on cleaning duty for the next month.

Dismissed, and god speed, Marines.

Just because you made a "Special" application format doesn't mean you have to make it apparent on every other one. Seriously, you make me want to die. Can you try to be a little humble?

I had some rather pleasant RP under Bickerson.

Limited as I had to go food but never-the-less, he's a good candidate here.

Question:1) How will you communicate with your marines in the mid game (when they're planetside)?

2) What is the first thing on your mind when I say the word "cargo"?

1) Primarily through instructions to the dedicated squad staff officer, if possible, with updated primary and secondary objectives. If I need to talk, I will try to keep it short and sweet, to avoid conflicting information.
Ideally I try to stay positive, rather than complaining about worthless marines, that just crashes morale and leads to opposition. Commands should be few apart, but obeyed, while squads need a high level of autonomy under their leader.

2) First thing on my mind would be "try and stop that RO line from rioting", and let's be honest, most people think that. Other than that, the main issue with Cargo is that they often feel overlooked - half the time they have 100+ points because no-one asks, or everyone asks with so short notice. You need to try involving them by getting packages prepared within five to ten minutes after deployment, to allow for them to be prepared in advance.
Or give them arr-pee things to do.

You discover you don't have SLs in most of your squads (only Charlie has one). What will your course of action be?

Assuming I have SOs, the specs (a round without 4 specs is physically impossible) are to be defined as acting SLs (except for Charlie). This is to be clearly communicated by the SO (assuming I have one, if not it is me or the XO) over squad comms and put as a secondary objective, until an SL awakens. If the spec gets made combat incapable, I have the smartgunner (similarly, there are likely 4) take over, then work down.

I would likely give the spec a SL helmet and comms, but I wouldn't go for an ID swap, that messes everything up, especially when a SL does wake up, and ruins it for the defrosted SL.

If the spec decides to try to ignore their responsibility, then there may or may not be MPs waiting on the Almayer return, depending on how they decide to slack off. Failure to assume their command as acting SL is neglecting their duty, but I am not going to yank out a crucial figure and sabotage the op, they can always be detained post operation. If they do fail to assume responsibility, then I default to next down on the hierarchy.

The rules are pretty inflexible in this, it's a military hierarchy, not a democracy, but if shit hits the fan, and PFC Urist McCompetent is the only decent member, I might issue an executive judgement that he is the only sane man in the squad who can lead it temporarily, as the rest are unfit for command. The break from protocol can be on me as a CO.

Cheers for the support, everyone!

Edit: I have a new stance to hold for my voters - as Commander, I petition that MPs are supplied with electric shavers, and all mirrors are removed from the Almayer. Mandatory head shaving is required for all sentences over 20 minutes, to prevent lice.
That way, all convicts must be shaved, and the de-individualisation serves as a way to enforce the law against snowflakes.
