Chen 'DiscoKing' Westinton's Top Tier CO Application

Post by WinterClould » 17 Oct 2017, 12:27

Byond ID: WinterClould

Player name you use: Chen 'DiscoKing' Westinton

A list of the links to your ban appeals within the last year:

Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines?

Absolutely. I fully understand how heavily scrutinized people who play CO can be and how its a very serious role taken very seriously. Being a trusted member of staff might rightfully so make the roll easier to earn, but they can lose their whitelist just like the rest of us. Command makes or breaks rounds for marines so someone who's just going to fuck around with it and consistently misuse it doesn't deserve to earn it or keep it.

Why should you be whitelisted?

I'll start off with a bit of a resume/list of qualifications. I've been consistently playing on the server for around 7ish months with a lot of time logged as either XO or SO, so I feel as though I have a fantastic grasp on how command works taught by some of the best in how to lead a team of marines to an enjoyable round at the very least, if not always ending in a win.
Additionally I've played almost every non-whitelisted role on the the server exceptions being MP,(Though I've CMP'd at least once, maybe twice?) CE, CT,(I've however RO'd many many times.) and Doctor/CMO,(Though I've done doctor work as the RnD man more then once.) and lastly anything xeno. I can safely say I know the in's and out's of just about everything the marine teams has going on with it as any good CO should, however my knowledge of the ayy's inner works is limited only to what I've seen in the rare youtube video or spectating as a ghost. I don't count my work as XRT as anything meaningful as I was basically insta killed both times because of how bad I was just trying to even learn the controls.

If I'm whitelisted I don't feel as though I'd stray far from the meta as far as FOB local and starting orders go. I know that can hurt a lot of peoples ratings when people vote for them but I honestly just like doing what works best but with whatever improvements my leadership or my own little additions to it can add. If I were any of you I wouldn't expect in a round lead by me to see many LZ-2 FOB's or many times where the starting squad orders aren't: 2 scouts, 1 Power, 1 FOB. But my goals will be to deliver those orders in a way that excites the marines, giving them the best starting moral possible with the motivation to put up a good fight against whatever it is they end up fighting. On top of that I strive to give good adjustments to those orders as the situation calls for it.

A little different from the usual though is I'm a BIG fan of sending down any spare shipside crew we have such as the occasional fifth SO we find ourselves with. The SO would likely work along side the topside RO to organize supply deliveries to the squads on the ground who might not be heard because they're talking on the planetside common radio. Or sending a doctor down to work along side the SO to do minor surgeries on slightly wounded marines, with a focus on as many small surgeries as often as possible, as well as screening healthy troops trying to pointlessly leave the planet to get out of fighting (Unless they need to cryo.). I really enjoy sending down shipside crew to the FOB because they're much more controllable then any normal marine because they're isolated in their lack of a squad. If I send down a MT I trust, I know they aren't going to run off and Rambo. They're going to help reinforce the FOB and be one more line of communication we'll have with the ground. That or they'll risk death via alien or death via Job ban for leaving the secured FOB.

Oh and to prove to the 1 or 2 people who might worry about me writing long ass briefings but not pre-typing them, thus taking 10 minutes for a single briefing. Here's a pre-typed briefing just for you in the spoiler section below! I hope it shows some creativity and RP what nots that impress you all enough to over look my old old days of fairly low RP when I first started out, or my past but not so past days of RP fit for a simple marine but totally unfit for someone of command rank. For the CO role I fully intend to show that I'm completely serious about sticking to the rules and RP guidelines. I've wanted to make a CO app for months but I was never sure that I was ready for it. Now I'm finally feeling ready, that I've matured enough as a player to get in there and lead the men from the tip of the top.

Thank you all for reading. I hope you all find me fit to serve. I welcome any criticisms of my character and if anyone might have ant special worries I'd like to do my best to dispel concerns any you might have before you vote negatively against me, veteran players and staff especially as your the biggest judges that I'm extremely terrified of writing this all. I've tried studying CO apps for about as long as I've been on the forums and I've tried real hard to get this right. I keep adding on little bits here at the end because Im so nervous of the possible rejection. Its terrifying. But do your worst, I need to earn this!
I can't wait to give this all a go if ya'll have me.
(The poll btw, I did the hell yeah or hell na and the jokey question only because it isn't mandatory anymore. so I just did it to be a bit different and in my eyes pretty funny.)

I kinda have a problem that my experience with you in command roles is you act like a meme in them, more or less a kid diagnosed with ADHD who hasn't taken his meds. I haven't seen you play them recently, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from a while back where you'd do stuff as the XO like, climb onto the table and spine around while the CO's giving briefing, then complain about being arrested for it. Also your character's a fashion snowflake, I've seen you get arrested in nearly every role for wearing the wrong thing, I'm not sure if this is accurate but you complained about that too as it if wasn't your behaviour that was the problem in those instances. I'll welcome a guy who likes to dress differently and skirt the law doing so, but that quirk needs to be moderated just slightly if you're gonna be CO.

At the same time your character's consistent and would definitely in their current state be different from other whitelisted COs if they keep their personality, and I'll welcome variety. I'm just concerned on if you'll take it too far and break RP guidelines as with the above example. Your briefing alleviates these concerns a bit, but is still close to the line between realistic CO with a personality to, well, the ramblings of a hyperactive teen?

Being honest about sticking close to the meta is a positive note, never playing aliens I don't care (bill carson never plays them, for example), keeping involved with the ship crew is a positive note, briefing's engaging, and you don't seem to be an asshole ooc.

So I'll give you a +1, but it could be a +1 if you could relieve the concerns about your character being too immature for the role, you feel? Like if someone can tell me you're competent and RP well in command, because I'm still stuck on the bad aftertastes from a whlie back.

It's great to see you applying for CO, I really wish that I could just give you a +1 and have that be all, but like Challenger I too remember the days when half the command staff would shake their head and sigh at your actions. I think that you have the ability to play CO well, but honestly I don't know if Chen as a character should be going for the position. I will admit that my last experience with you in a command role when I was also in one to observe (not couting SL) was a good while ago, and it likely isn't fair to judge you on it. However, I will too hold myself for mistakes of the past, and I think everyone else should as well.

I'm going to ask a listing of questions to you, if you'll humor me. Give me your best IC response and reaction to them.

You receive a hail from an encrypted frequency claiming to be a UPP vessel scouting this sector. Their preliminary scans of the planet have yielded them detailed images of both the creatures you're fighting. They take this as an opportunity to offer the USMC assistance in exchange for cease fire talks in other locations branching off of this sector. What will your course of action be?

Marines throw a fit during briefing, one marine stands out as inciting a mutiny and a riot, they clearly have full disregard for your leadership and authority. What will you do?

A marine challenges you to a dance off in briefing to see who the real DiscoKing will be. What do you do?

Their are numerous reports of the CMP arresting marines for minor crimes and upping their sentences with falsifications. What is your course of action in dealing with this troubling news?

This is only some of the many questions I would like to ask you. I still have fresh memories of an event where a UPP ambassador visited the Almayer to have genuine talks with the commander, and during that critical rp between the CO and the UPP ambassador you were dancing and shouting that they were going to betray us and asking them questions like do they like W-Y. Meanwhile the commander was attempting to broker a deal. This was absolutely painful to live through, and ended what could have been a unique moment where the UPP and the USMC could have for once at least for a small time, brokered a weak alliance.

Now, take all of this with a grain of salt, it's extremely difficult for me to forget things. I also hold myself to this level of accountability. What I need to know is just how much you've changed during command roles.

I've seen you play virtually every role, and I'm proud to say that I've watched you improve a LOT over the passed seven months, you're a known face and though you do silly things now and then it's never meant to derail the round as often as it's meant to bring some laughter into a round, and I can respect that. You have a very unique personality in Chen, and honestly that's a very great thing. If and when you start commanding as him, you're likely going to have to strike a deep balance between what Chen would do, and what a CO SHOULD do during some situations. If you can do that, then you have an absolute solid +o7 from me.

I'll wait for your response and consider it before placing a + or - though.

Thank you so much for saying what you have. I appreciate the positive remarks, and I feel like the concerns you have are exactly what I was worried some people might not be able to over look.
About a month ago I got warned by a moderator not to spin on tables during briefing as any of the officer ranks. I was only doing it because I was just a PO and not the XO at the time but I've taken it to heart anyway so unless Im being some silly PFC Ill be keeping my dancing firmly placed on the ground and for only short bursts not for outrageous minutes at a time like I might have months ago.
On the clothing point, as a member of command staff the only uniforms I value more then the one Im already wearing are the ones ranked above it. As CO Ill never wear or steal anyone else's clothes since I'm already wearing the most prized uniform on the ship. I may however take a liking to any uniform of any admirals that come aboard but I'd never start a fight over it or do something silly like try to pants them for it.

1) You receive a hail from an encrypted frequency claiming to be a UPP vessel scouting this sector. Their preliminary scans of the planet have yielded them detailed images of both the creatures you're fighting. They take this as an opportunity to offer the USMC assistance in exchange for cease fire talks in other locations branching off of this sector. What will your course of action be?

2) Marines throw a fit during briefing, one marine stands out as inciting a mutiny and a riot, they clearly have full disregard for your leadership and authority. What will you do?

3) A marine challenges you to a dance off in briefing to see who the real DiscoKing will be. What do you do?

4) Their are numerous reports of the CMP arresting marines for minor crimes and upping their sentences with falsifications. What is your course of action in dealing with this troubling news?

1) (Good lord) Chen isn't someone with a true dislike for the UPP. He see's them as clear rivals for the USCM and a very powerful force to be reckoned with. Cease fires elsewhere in the system likely aren't something I can honestly promise them, but at least trying to open up talks for them is something I'm totally willing to do in exchange for their help with our little alien problem. I'd welcome a small 3 man diplomatic envoy from their ship to be sent over to talk over the details. I'd make it clear to them that anything more then 3 men would be seen as bad form and would damage our willingness to negotiate. Any number of them counting above 3 would be detained till after I talk with their representative. I'd have the MP force escort them to a meeting room (NOT THE CIC) and there we shall talk for real.

2) If there is one marine, round start, briefing hasn't even begun yet but were all in the room and they're already attempting to incite a mutiny/riot.. isn't the answer obvious? Mateba to the face will shut him up and hopefully calm most of the other fit throwing marines. Any other marines crying or whining over anything will have to deal with it by the MP and enjoy time in jail for not settling down when I order them to.

3) In the middle of briefing I ignore him, we have more important things to do. Before briefing if we have time Ill humor him and do a little dance for a few seconds and something with something in /me then say I won. If its after briefing Ill show him the true power of this CO's funky grooves for a maybe 10 seconds along with a more elaborate /me. Anyone still in briefing left to witness it couldn't possibly deny the face that I'd absolutely wiped the floor with him.

4) If there are multiple people reporting that he's doing this then there will have to be an investigation. I'd demand the CMP come to CIC to explain the situation then I'd ask the other MP's that have been awake for this if they've seen anything wrong. If it turns out the CMP has consistently been arresting people for false charges then marine law states that he needs to be punished for that and jail time plus likely being striped of his rank will follow. If it turns out the CMP has just been an asshole giving everyone max time for crimes they've actually committed I'd ask him to settle down on doing that since it's clearly causing a problem, but marine law is his job so I can't stop him from doing anything unless he breaks it.

Hope I did good on those. As CO I'll have a clear focus on not repeating the mistakes of my past where I've gone too far either do to ignorance or just being a dumbass. I know when command is allowed to be funny and when it needs to be serious. My orders and such can be creative and interesting but when the serious "problems" of the round show up I need to be a true CO that gets results and doesn't fuck around.

Oh and thanks to the others for the support so far. I think I made it a bit obvious that I'm super nervous about all of this so every kind remark really helps me out over here.

The three so far that have -1'd me though in the poll, I'd love if you'd give me the chance to change your mind through the magic of my reassuring words. You should make your complaints known so others can can be informed and so I can try and change your mind of course!

There's not really a wrong answer, it's just to get an idea of what your responses and behavior will be when these situations arise.

1) This is fine, it opens up a dialog and offers the chance at roleplay, much better of an option than months ago.

2) The answer is what you make it, FE is an option for commanders, so is sending them to the brig or pulling rank and chewing them right the fuck out. Sometimes intimidation before FE can make a marine stop their shit without losing you a gun on the field, but yeah, FE works. Not going to knock it.

3) This is acceptable in my eyes for Chen. Generally before briefing the marines have no idea of the threats below and will think it's just going to be easy money, a cake walk. The CO taking a couple of moments to just fuck around and lighten the mood shows that the CO isn't a hard ass. Some people are going to have different opinions on this one, to each their own. I think we have quite a few by the book CO's, and having one that breaks things away from that in some regard is a breath of fresh air.

4) Excellent.

With that, if you hold to it and avoid going too over the top with Chen shenanigans as CO then yeah, you have my support.

Everyone deserves a chance, so I'll offer my backing to give you one. 07 +1

Re: Chen 'DiscoKing' Westinton's Top Tier CO Application

don't really post on applications, never really though i'd see a fucking DiscoKing application though.

the first time i remember meeting Chen was on prison station, which was shortly after i returned from my break after sulaco-era ended. my initial impression i got from him was that he was definitely someone special, i couldn't quite put my finger on it. i think he was one of the first people i met who left a lasting 'impression' on me when i started playing CM again if that says anything at all. i've never really had any problems with winterclould before, he's more competent than your run-of-the-mill marine, and has proven himself before. that being said, the only thing i believe he lacks slightly is maturity; but it's 2d spessman and he's shown himself off as quite the command role aficionado in my book. for me i'd have to give him a +1, however if he is to play as CO i'd expect fairly high maturity on the Carson CO Chart.

i had more cool words to put here but i'm too tired to. good job winterclould, feels just like yesterday you sent the butt of your gun through my window.

Youre generally ok.

You do some stupid power-gaming and snowflakey shit sometimes which you really need to chill on though.

QQ Please I beg you to take sympathy on this poor ol goy. Disco lives on but if it's not the kind of tune you can groove to perhaps you would be more interested in a high quality jam like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQLaq9uKU4

Could you please give me a little run down on some of those power-gamey things I need to pull back on? I don't want to be fucking around skirting the line on things if I can help it. If its about the three or so notes I have about riding in wheelchairs a few months ago don't worry. I haven't touched one since that time you deleted the one I was riding in.

Approved. But try to be a little less Powergamey.
Some examples are, working outside your field, or pushing "play to win" so hard that it eclipses any RP.
