StephenNelson/Brian Scott CO Application

Post by StephenNelson » 21 Apr 2018, 06:46

Byond ID:Stephennelson

Player name you use the most: Brian Scott

Make a list of links to all of your applications and (job)ban appeals, including whitelist and staff apps, within the last year. Also, provide "Ban reason; Verdict" beside each (job)ban link: N/A

Do you understand that any player - even donors or staff members - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our Server Rules or Roleplay Guidelines?

Yes

Do you understand how the Battlefield Execution functions?

Yes

Do you understand you are not above Marine law, or allowed to enforce it yourself?

Yes

What do you think is the job of a Commander?

First and foremost the job of a commander is to promote interesting gameplay. While doing so A commander must lead the crew of the Almayer. Role play comes first, however leading the marines must also be considered a top priority.

If a member of your staff is disobeying orders, how would you handle it?

Ask him/her to discontinue their behavior. If they do not stop, I would call the MPs (assuming some are available.) If no MPs are available or within reach, I would warn the staff member again. Failing to comply with orders after two consecutive attempts at communicating would result in a BE.

Why should you be whitelisted?

I Have been playing CM for about 1 year now. Recently, I have played CL and PO, And occasionally XO. I figure that CO is the next logical whitelisted step. I understand that I have some notes attached to my account, however I promise that I have learned and moved past these. As a CO I will follow both marine law and the rules of the server. I also believe that the most interesting rounds come from unconventional tactics. God knows we could use more LZ2 FOBs on LZ-624. As a CO I will, attempt to make each round unique, without throwing the round for the marines. My decisions will henge on the number of available marines as well as the type of available marines.

As far as character traits go, I would like to play a CO who is understanding yet firm. I will NEVER resort to BEs unless the marine in question has been given multiple opportunities to correct their attitude. I do not enjoy removing marines from the round arbitrarily. Expect a CO who likes to win, yet attempts novel strategies to do so.

Thank you all in advance for your feedback

Well, I think I've never seen you as an SO or an XO, though that can be due to different timezones and/or my poor memory.

Also, this seems really low effort

I'm gonna go with a -1 on this one. I think that you need to play XO way more, not just "occasionally"

Understandable. I'm definitely not known very well as I tend to fly under the radar. Hell, I bet my Reddit posts are known more than my CM Fourms posts. Still please keep an eye out for me over the next few weeks! I'll definitely play XO.

Can you give some examples of novel tactics you'd try? By your forum activity you're not entirely new, but this app could have more effort. Go into detail on what types of strats you'd try and I think people could be willing to give you a chance.
I play Dave Ross, local metalhead that accidentally dived head-first into the army.

I used to play Trevor 'Chinatown' Li.

Here's an Updated application, majorly fleshed out.

First and foremost the job of a commander is to promote interesting gameplay. While doing so A commander must lead the crew of the Almayer. Role play comes first, however leading the marines must also be considered a top priority. The ability to balance RP/novelty and practicality is a hallmark of a good commander. A commander should strive to introduce new and unique strategies and tactics without outright throwing the round for the marines.

If a member of your staff is disobeying orders, how would you handle it?

First, I would ask them why they are failing to follow my orders. If they have a legitimate reason then I will hear them out. It could be that they are more aware of a specific squad's situation than I am and they are preventing me from ordering the men into a slaughter. If there is no valid reason for them to be disobeying my orders, and they do not stop, I would give them a firm warning. If they continue to disobey I would call the MPs (assuming some are available.) If no MPs are available or within reach, I would warn the staff member again. Failing to comply with orders after two consecutive attempts at communicating would result in a BE assuming the staff member cannot be arrested.

As a CO I will attempt to make each round unique, without throwing the round for the marines. My decisions will hinge on the number of available marines as well as the type of available marines.

Alternate FoB placement is one example of an unconventional tactic that I would like to introduce. LZ2 on LV-624 can be made into a great FoB site, and building a FoB here also breaks up the LZ1/Nexus/Hydro meta that most LV-624 rounds devolve into. LZ2 on Big Red is also a viable spot for a FoB. (although I do recognize that it is generally inferior to LZ1.) A FoB at LZ2 at big red would be a far less common tactic, as Big Red is already large enough for battles to be unique. (Xeno hive placement is much more fluid on Big Red.) I would really like to try to establish a proper containment area for the infected during infection rounds. Re-routing some metal and plasteel to the MTs and having them set up a proper containment area on the Almayer before all hell breaks loose would dramatically change how the round plays out. (This is assuming we get some information from high command on the nature of our mission.)

I would also like to see CAS used more often than it generally is. I would communicate with Specalists/SLs near round-start and make sure that they were all aware of how to call in airstrikes, and that I would like them to make use of CAS if and when the situation calls for it.

Facilitating communication and the spread of information is important for any command role, however this becomes vital when one is playing as the CO. Now that general coms have been restricted, facilitating the flow of information between squads/departments largely falls onto command's shoulders. I like to think that I have become proficient at relaying information across channels and keeping all necessary parties informed. While playing PO/SO/XO I am constantly relaying information between command, the squads, req, and medical. PO especially has taught me the value of keeping parties informed. A radio call to medical detailing the severity and number of wounded marines helps them do their job better, and by extension helps the wounded marines. As a CO I would certainly employ these lessons in communication.

Anyone who has interacted with me as CL can tell you that I enjoy RP. Player interactions outside of combat are by far my favorite aspect of CM. From Researcher-Xeno hi-jinks to run of the mill colonist RP, i enjoy it all. I feel as if I have gotten fairly adept at facilitating these interactions between players. All too often a response team will arrive on the Almayer and immediately be set upon by the marines without any roleplay occurring. I view this as a wasted opportunity. A combined UPP-Marine last stand against the xenos in medbay is infinitely more fun and interesting than a brief firefight during which no words are said and those who are not killed are in pain-crit limping around waiting to get picked off.

Having said this, I do realize that RP requires both parties to want to RP. I will not bend over backwards to try and capture a survivor alive who has been wordlessly killing marines. Likewise, if UPP, CLF, Freelancers, or any other faction board the Almayer and immediately begin to kill marines, I will not stop the marines from hunting down and killing the threat. I would of course attempt to speak to the leader of the hostile forces and get them to stand down. If they are indeed open to dialogue, (and a ceasefire) then RP can begin.

Finally, I won't use any character quirks unless they develop organically over the course of my playing on CM. I suppose that I may be prone to sarcasm, but this is because of me personal sense of humor and not a forced character trait. I will speak normal English and react the way I feel a battalion leader in the marines would react to events, namely, with confidence and professionalism.

Thank you all in advance for your feedback

The whole point of the first application post of being locked after an hour is to avoid this. Once you submit it, you can't just listen to advice and change it the next day.

Right-o. Well then go ahead and lock this. I'll try again next moth after I have some more XO experience under my belt.

Feel free to lock/move this application.

I'm also going with -1, haven't seen you around, especially XO.
I play as Monday "Scatter" Williams, he is the guy that takes no one seriously, except his good friend, his work.

Plays as much command as literally everyone else putting in an application, but put much more effort into his app.

Easy +1

Going to have to go with -1 as it feels like there wasn't any effort put in this app.
