Lily - MattAtlas' Synthetic Application

Post by MattAtlas » 02 Apr 2018, 13:52

Byond ID:
- MattAtlas

Marine Name (so we know who you are; if you play alien mostly, state that here):
- Lyla Bennett

Name/Designation of the Synth Character you’re requesting to use (Follows common naming rules, and requires a first name with no last name):
- Lily
Examples of acceptable names: Jessica, Miles, Tom
Examples of unacceptable names: Trump, God, Robot

Are you familiar with the Synthetic Programming and Guidelines (viewtopic.php?f=57&t=14417)?
- Indeed. I've read it over several times.

Synthetic Character Story (An ADEQUATE description and story of your Synthetics actions and involvement in a previous mission onboard the Almayer):
► Show Spoiler
How do you intend to play your Synth (as in, describe HOW you will act/play your Synth and what support roles you’ll mainly focus on, what is your synthetics quirk)?
- In my mind, synthetics should act calm and composed in most situations, while optimistic or incredibly honest when needed. That is exactly how I'm going to play Lily, a synthetic that will be calm and composed, often telling the truth how it is. As for the areas I'm going to be focusing in, Lily is going to be focusing more on engineering and medical duties. Command would make the advisor-like quirk shine the most, but engineering and medical are what will be of the most use in a round. I'm experienced in both roles, so I do not think I'm going to be specifically focusing on either.

How familiar are you with support roles? (ie; Medical, MT, Science, SO)
- I am very familiar with those roles, having played a lot as command as an SO or other command roles, having a solid knowledge of how engineering works, and medical considering I've played a lot with this type of medical system. I'm also familiar with chemistry, although I'd say that is what I have the least experience in. As for marine law, I know most of it by memory, considering it is essential to playing a synthetic. As for other support roles such as Requisitions, I know the ins and outs of that as well.

Why should we whitelist you?
- I'd consider myself a good roleplayer, and the concept of a roleplaying a synthetic interests me a lot. I think roleplaying as a synthetic will be a very nice change of pace from roleplaying as a marine, and I have a lot of experience with shipside roles such as medical and engineering.

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason (we will check, and lies may result in immediate denial)?
- No, I have not.

Are you currently banned from any other servers and if so, why?
- No, I have not.

Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or the Synthetic Programming Guideline?
- I do understand this. This is essential to managing whitelists.

Personally speaking, the story comes off somewhat short. Another thing that strikes me a bit off is that I can't really feel the optimism quirk in the story. It's less "they can make it!" and more "they're required alive and well." Aside from that, the story was neatly written and I'm neutral leaning towards a +1.

Random question but she noted that her patients may degrade yet she focuses on the one with just broken bones. Why's that?
Troublesome, as usual.

That is indeed where the subtle optimism was supposed to show, considering it isn't just her in the medbay but also other doctors too. She believed the other doctors could have kept the patients stabilized, so it was more of a mental note she had, really.

I like the story, but your synthetic quirk seems pretty bland. Do you have any other ideas on how to use it ingame, or write up a dialogue between Lily and someone else?

Yes, 'optimism' is indeed quite bland. However, as shown in the story, it won't be very obvious - it'll be kept subtle. What will instead be more obvious is the calm demeanour, mostly unchanging, which could even appear eerie in some situations. The 'optimism' will be very subtle and generally unnoticeable, but it's going to be there in some sentences. The calm demeanour will be shown by not using contracted forms and the lack of obvious expression (so, no exclamation marks or question marks), and generally by showing not much outward emotion.

I think this is clear enough-- but if a dialogue is still needed, I'll write one up.

I think a dialogue would be better used, as every synth I have encountered has a "calm demeanor".

I can write another one, if that's not enough.

That sounds exactly like my synth, and we could always use another synth that is actually polite.

I've seen Lyla around quite abit. I'd be fine with them working as a synth especially after her answers to the questions, makes me feel that she knows about a synthetics personality well. I also don't think that optimism is the real quirk, it's more that brutal factual honesty. The optimism just feels that muh better once it has been built up. I dig most of the story.

+1 from me.

It's always a pleasure to have Lyla Bennett in support roles. Tends to be competent and reliable. Would love to see Lily at work.

Great at shipside roles, solid rp'r though this is from observation and not interaction. Haven't played much with recently due to differing schedules probably. You are also real active in the community.

+1 for sure!

The story's short and to the point but I don't really get your quirk, are you trying to be straightforward or optimistic, because I'm only seeing straightforward in the story, otherwise I have no complaints. Neutral.

I do not see any big red flags in this whitelist application. I have seen you in-game and think you deserve a chance to be a good synth. Hence I will +1

Story is alright, it's long and cohesive enough to show that effort was put into it but nothing really jumped out at me as being unique. What it does do is clearly show that you have read and understand the synthetic guidelines in terms of how synths should behave which is good. I feel like a broken record at this point but your quirk doesn't really stand out at all. Remaining calm and composed is something that every synth should be doing unless their quirk said otherwise. This has been pointed out by previous comments and your response was that your synth would be calm and unchanging, however that's how I'd expect every synth to act considering that they don't feel emotion.

The reason I harp on quirk so much is that they exist to make it more fun for you to actually play the role and stand out from just another synth. One example of what I would consider a fantastic quirk is in Admiralis' synth app. It is something completely different from the average synth and makes RP interactions with his synth in game stand out and be fun, which is not only enhancing the experience for players but also for himself. By having a unique playstyle in mind you're not only able to RP more effectively, you're also able to have more fun.

I don't personally recognize you in game so I won't make any comments there. However from all the other comments on this app I have no reason to assume anything other than that you're a rockstar player.

Like a few other people, I have not seen you stand out as a player much, but that could definitely just be different time zones.

Pretty short story.
Decent answers.
Did just make their Forum account a little bit ago, but have some good activity.
I think we have a lot of synths that are polite, and can't really state any that are not.

Therefore, I will have to go with a neutral. You got good feedback, so some people know you.

Good luck.
I play as Monday "Scatter" Williams, he is the guy that takes no one seriously, except his good friend, his work.

Story is alright but it's too short for what it has to offer, it it was longer at the same pacing and level of writing it was at it would be good. To be blunt I think your quirk is just blander then white bread. You're active ingame and seem alright but the main thing is having a good application and I don't believe this one is at the standard of what a good application is.

-1

However if this is denied and you re-apply you could easily pull off a way better application with a bit more effort and a more unique quirk.

Accepted

While I would agree with Kavlo that your biography is a bit on the short side- I believe that it accomplishes what it should set out to do, and gives me a good idea of how you will play your synth. It might be a good idea to be slightly less robotic in your presentation in-game. Nonetheless, I think you will play the role well.
