Synthetic Command Transfer: Hannibal model 253

Post by Luftkommando » 18 Nov 2018, 05:36

Byond ID: Luftkommando

Marine Name (so we know who you are; if you play alien mostly, state that here): I've jumped names a lot, so I'll just put Alexis 'Luckless' Newton.

Name/Designation of the Synth Character you’re requesting to use (Follows common naming rules, and requires a first name with no last name): Hannibal

Are you familiar with the Synthetic Programming and Guidelines (viewtopic.php?f=57&t=18978)?
  • I am familiar with the rules regarding Synthetics and their operations. The new rules are mostly common sense. A synth is meant to play a support role to the Marine's offense. They aren't there to be a tank or go ham with a telebaton, they're there to make sure the marines get what they need when they need it for the coming battle. In addition, a synthetic should listen to all commissioned officers and heads of staff without question, unless said order can be deemed less critically important in the current situation. (I.E. being asked to clean the blood streaks off medbay when you're currently operating on a marine. The marine's surgery comes first due to the life at stake and the time-sensitive nature of it.)
Synthetic Character Story (An ADEQUATE description and story of your Synthetics actions and involvement in a previous mission onboard the Almayer):
  • The story below points out the major role-play points I want to make with Hannibal. If you want more reading after the main story on-thread this is a link to the, mostly abandoned since I ran out of creative steam, collection of short stories I made regarding Hannibal and operations aboard the U.S.S. Wichita during a U.S.C.M. operation against the C.L.F. Since the creation of that thread I added Hannibal's 'physical' quirk, so the thread is not one-hundred percent accurate in terms of that portion of his Role-play but is still representative of the bulk of the RP he would be doing.
► Show Spoiler
How do you intend to play your Synth (as in, describe HOW you will act/play your Synth and what support roles you’ll mainly focus on, what is your synthetics quirk)?
  • Hannibal's quirk will be 'by the book'. Always taking first into consideration the standard procedure for a given task and very rarely if ever making adjustments on his own. I intend to focus on assisting command over medical or ship-side engineering even though I can fulfill those roles should they need to be filled. Hannibal being most 'at home', as much as a Synth can be 'at home', providing tactical knowledge in operations ground-side or giving an unbiased and calm voice of reason to the command staff aboard the Almayer. In practice this 'by the book' attitude will result in Hannibal citing U.S.C.M.C. doctrine and procedures. I eventually hope to make an actual fluff piece for 'U.S.C.M.C. Doctrine' so people who feel the urge to look it up can understand what the blazes Hannibal is on about when he cites "Article Three, Section Two dash C of U.S.C.M. command doctrine".

The more major quirk I wanted to employ is the following paragraph. I just didn't feel the specific way I wanted to role-play it fit into the main category quirks come from.

Hannibal's sheer age means that he's often broken down and been repaired quite a lot in that time. The only part of his original creation that hasn't been replaced or repaired being his 'consciousness' which has minor overflow problems. This 'overflow' results in past tangentially correlated memories to be brought up every so often as Hannibal speaks with individuals. Practically this will be role-played as Hannibal occasionally mis-naming some of those he speaks to and when this is pointed out remarking with some variation of "How rude of me, Your voice/appearance/mannerisms are very similar to that of (insert fake name here). I apologize for my confusion." or speaking with someone who isn't there for a moment before inevitably being interrupted by someone asking who he was speaking to. Some echo of a past conversation creeping back up as Hannibal gets to a location that is just close enough to a previous memory to trigger it. For the mis-naming, I'll try and focus that on only a handful of people per round and have a set 'echo' for each of them. Since just constantly spouting off random names can and will just get completely confusing after that point. With a smaller number it can very clearly be defined who Hannibal's 'echo' versions refer to.
How familiar are you with support roles? (ie; Medical, MT, Science, SO)
  • I'm familiar enough with support roles to know all basic operations. All major engineering functions I know, I'm conversable with the medical procedures, and while I'm not a wiz with the experimental stuff that a Researcher will play with I'm fine enough with it.
Why should we whitelist you?
  • I enjoy the prospect of playing a synthetic and have, most, of the skills regarding role-playing them. I enjoy learning and being a team-player, with a Synthetic being a good all around character who can assist in all parts of the operation aboard the Almayer.
Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason (we will check, and lies may result in immediate denial)?
  • I have not, to my knowledge, been banned from CM in the past month.
Are you currently banned from any other servers and if so, why?
  • I am not currently banned from any other SS13 servers to my knowledge. Although I very rarely play other servers so if I was silently banned while offline I wouldn't know.
Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or the Synthetic Programming Guideline?
  • I fully understand this and accept the punishments if I were to break them.

But who killed Hannibal?

You are a trusted player, and its a decent quirk. There was a good amount of visible effort put into the app.

Why is the Almayer picking up a synth that is so old and known to glitch that way?

There could be a couple reasons.
  1. The Almayer isn't a top-of-her-class vessel, nor is she even very combat capable (her singular AA cannon is disabled and she has only a few of what I assume are space-torpedo tubes). She's a transport ship and probably not high on the list of 'Let's get fresh synths there'. Maybe it's High Command cutting corners where they can and assigning an old, beat up Synthetic to a ship that's unlikely to see any actual combat outside serving as a floating supply base. High Command not believing the glitches to be a large enough detriment to Hannibal's functions to warrant removal from service.
  2. Possibly the Captain or a cryoed officer aboard the Almayer was transferred and vouched to bring Hannibal along. Citing that despite the age and minor issues with memory they're still a great asset to have on the patrols the Almayer would be taking.
  3. Perhaps the Almayer herself was cutting corners. Having to choose between a fresh, and expensive, hot off the presses Synthetic or a cheaper but older model with a few relatively minor issues, they decided that to keep the budget where it needed to be they would take the cheaper of the two options.
  4. Maybe there just were no other options available at the time. The Almayer is racing to get out of dock when they realize their synthetic unit never actually arrived. Rushing back to the quartermaster they find that the only available unit left is the dusty old Hannibal model nobody else wanted. So they take it. After all, it's only got a few minor problems. It'll be fine.

Why'd you choose the name Hannibal? Any significance?

How often do you intend to use this in a quirk?

What do you do if the CO takes very poorly of it, and asks you to not speak over command, and find menial tasks to do?

There was no significance given to the name when I chose it. I just went with the first name I thought of that wasn't already in use.

The protocol spouting will be consistantly done. If someone 'breaks' protocol in minor ways, like medical not turning on the surgery sign on the door when they start a surgery, Hannibal will mention the broken protocol in passing and if someone wants advice from Hannibal he'll always preface it with an "According to X..." to let them know where he's getting the information from.

I only intend to use the mis-naming on no more than two or three individuals in a round. With only one being someone Hannibal would commonly speak to, like a member of command staff or medical, and the other potential two being uncommon speakers, like marines or MTs. The echoed conversations would be uncommon enough that I would only do one or two in a round.

As for the question on the order. I would proceed to do my best to find tasks while not speaking over the Command channel. The given order doesn't conflict with any laws so I am required to follow it.

That was a solid answer to the question, i was initially uncomfortable with a synth, the most "cognitively sound" member of the crew being "cognitively unsound" as part of their quirk, but i think my fear stemmed from your story where the "mental" lapse occurred during an important conversation about the fate of the entire ship. I really like the spouting of protocol, it's definitely something an older model might do.

A tentative 1+ from me.

+1.

Luft is a staple of the community and has been here quite a while, and the application itself is pretty good. This is a stellar example of a synthetic whitelist application, I just wanted to see how you responded to these questions.

Pretty good application, pretty good roleplayer, not much else to say. Gonna be a +1 from me.

remember to not remove your ID in front of a sentry in the CIC though

I've RPed with them a couple times as a predator, they never shot me even if they definitely should of.

The quirk is workable, and I take a like to it - being similar to mine. The story was written well enough.

+1, shoot more predators

As far as the quirk goes, as long as it's limited and doesn't actually cause issues that would result in it being replaced it should be fine. No actual issues from the player overall, and anything of note has already been brought up as far as I care for. Since you have a predator whitelist as well and haven't caused issue in that role I don't think there's too much reason to assume you would in the synth role. I'll give this a +1.
