Project Liam's Application

Post by Zartam » 30 Dec 2017, 11:42

Byond ID:
- Zartam

Marine Name:
- Vito Cordoba (MP, SO, XO)
- Dastan Al Akavir (Doctor, CMO)
- Sa'id Al Akavir (Squad Medic, Squad Leader)
- Ludvigs Von Storm (Squad Engineer, MT, CE)

Name of the Synth Character:
- Liam

Are you familiar with the Synthetic Programming and Guidelines ?
Yep, read everything and understood.

Synthetic Character Story :
Image Liam is a fairly new synthetic, last generation, and he has served only on the Almayer.
His sysadmin is a young adult named Azami Kochi, AI psychologist and high ranking engineer in USCM High Command. Despite her young age and lack of experience, she is seen as a child prodigy in the scientific community.
Azami Kochi wanted to implement in Liam's firmware a new client-server communication system using quantum processors and a "fourth-dimensional" "Tesseract" coding language. This technology being experimental, the project has been accepted at one cost : the quantum processors should only serve an auxiliary purpose in Liam's functions. In other terms, main processors are standard, and the experimental ones only show up from time to time, following pre-determined testing routines.

How do you intend to play your Synth ?
Because of his young age, Liam can hardly imitate any human emotion and still has to learn how to leave the uncanny valley in terms of behavior. Despite his lack of "humanity", he is talented and can provide consistent support to any department. His experimental firmware can show up anytime, with random results, but the acting commander can remotely disable Liam if needed. Liam will remind the acting commander of this right regularly.
Example of random behaviors : installation of robotic limbs or organs during surgery without consent for transhumanism purposes, replacement of Tcomms APC with a potato battery, delivery of a lenghty speech with the megaphone during memorial service while the ship is being boarded.

Added to that, Liam will develop a growing interest in the Xeno threat, until it becomes an obsession. Along different stages (hearing of the existence of the xenos, seeing a dead xeno, seeing a live xeno, communicating with a xeno...) he will become more and more supportive until he reaches the point where this could become a threat for the USCM. He might modify OB coordinates to prevent the losses of xenos, prevent access to the self destruct system if all command staff is already dead, cuff an infected marine who is trying to commit suicide or prioritize infected marines during evac (one infected marine with 2 healthy civilians to ensure spread of xeno infection in the escape pod).

While some of this behavior may be borderline, Liam will 90% of the time be a helpful and friendly synthetic, and whenever I'll have a doubt, I'll use adminhelp to double check if something is feasible or not.

How familiar are you with support roles?

I am a skilled CMO, CE and I'm quite familiar with the role of MP.
For example, I can practice field surgery with oxycodone and ghetto tools, find the required elements to make bots, transform a door into a deadly fast-closing, electrified deathtrap, or build an autism fort in CIC using only the metal we can find there.

Why should we whitelist you?

I've been playing CM since the Nostromo, almost every role except req. I love this game and would like to explore the more obscure roles available that require to be whitelisted.
Predators require to be fairly robust in combat, which I am not, and CO requires strategy skills that I don't have, which is why I only play XO during low pop. However, I already tried different (successful) strategies such as LZ2 FOB on LV-624 and 3-squads underground assault from different locations on Ice Colony.

Synthetics, however are more RP oriented and I think I could provide a good animation with my character Liam.

Outside of CM, I used to be gamemaster in a French cyberpunk online roleplaying game and provide animations to a community of 200 people. I stopped due to a lack of personal time, but I'm still involved in this game as a player (as an artificial intelligence). I appreciate games like SOMA and every entertainment works exploring the nature of Human consciousness. I watched and really enjoyed all Aliens, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Armitage III and many more.

Have you been banned from CM in the last month for any reason?

I've never been banned from CM, but I've made some rookie mistakes.

Are you currently banned from any other servers and if so, why?

I was banned few years ago on a High RP server for stealing the captain's uniform and spreading the HoP's brain on the floor while shooting "YOU'RE THE NEW JANITOR". My character had a good reason to do this, but it still broke their non-antag rules. My character was a miner, he found an old research station full of blood and gibs and lost his mind. He then went back to the main station and asked the HoP to give him access to the janitorial closet, for space cleaner, because he was traumatized and wanted to clean himself. Evil HoP demoted him to janitor, leading to a salty, yet skillfull and ironical revenge.

Do you understand that any player - donor or otherwise - can have their whitelist status revoked should they break our rules or the Synthetic Programming Guideline?

Yep

So you're basically going to RP a malfunctioning synthetic that doesn't have a developed learning algorithm and has to learn everything from the scratch besides how to Play every role in every department.

About the malfunctioning part, yep. IF allowed. Had this idea and found that it could be entertaining.
If not, then I'll just play by the book and focus on the character's under-developed learning algorithm and CL-like obsession to Xenos.

From Synth Programming and Guidelines by Feweh -http://cm-ss13.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=14417
USCM Programming -
All USCM Synthetics are built with a 100% understanding and adherence to Marine Law. They are unable to break Marine Law. Also, a Synthetic must follow orders from USCM Command provided it does not conflict with Marine Law...A Synthetic would also never second-guess an order from a command figure provided it causes no conflict with Marine Law or their own self-preservation.

You can't sabotage the USCM. Atleast not without VERY good reasons that comply with Synthetic Guidelines.

I suggest rereading the guidelines if you haven't. You can still edit your application for about an hour, then it's locked. Look at other applications and I might change my 'vote'.

The examples I put in my application are not going against Marine law. Modifying OB coordinates is part of the overwatch officer's duty, coordinates don't have to be the same as announced by the squad leaders. Preventing access to self destruct if there is no official SD announcement from command is stricly protecting the integrity of the ship. Cuffing an infected marine trying to commit suicide is preventing a death. Sending three people in an escape pod is following proper evacuation procedure.

And again, if this specific part of my application is not appreciated, I can go by the book. This condition is part of my application, so I don't have to make any change to comply with your vision.

wiki/Rank#Succession.2FChain_of_Command

This is the chain of command, there will always be a acting Commander and if it's just a PFC you'll have to follow their orders.

Modifying OB coordinates is borderline very bad. If any command staff tells you to set exactly those coordinates you basically have to do it and can't modify it.

The thing with cuffing a marine while he's infected and commiting suicide is, you can not break marine law while doing so.

Also you said, "(one infected marine with 2 healthy civilians to ensure spread of xeno infection in the escape pod)", that's clearly sabotaging the USCM which shouldn't be in the interest of a USCM synthetic.

I am familiar with the chain of command and the Marine Law. Had to play with this a lot as an MP. And it's full of holes and uncovered exceptional situations that a synth could profit from to animate a round. One of the golden rules in roleplaying is to build a stable background, then extract exceptional situations from this stability to provide entertainment.

When the Almayer is boarded and Command staff is dead or unreachable on Tcomms, it is never clear if we should self destruct or not. Preventing access to the room is not breaking any laws in this case.
The OB example was in the scenario when there is no Staff Officer for a specific squad, and the synthetic is requested to do an SO job by the acting commander. In this case the synthetic is in charge of every decision OB-related.
Concerning the pod, it depends on whether a synth is regulated in his actions or his intentions. The action of saving 3 alive humans is legal itself.

Sure, SOMETIMES Synths can do "evil" things if permitted, but most of the time you are playing as a USCM programmed Synth, meaning that you are designed to respect the USCM chain of command and assist the marines to the best of your abilities.

What your application shows is that you seem more interested in making an antagonist who, without warning, suddenly turns on his masters to satisfy their own interests in between bouts of randomly fucking over marines (such as your installing of potato batteries inside vital APCs, which is a really, REALLY fucky thing to do).

Synths are complicated machines that sometimes show some form of advanced intellect, but they always remain loyal to those assigned to. If the staff decide you are suddenly working for Weyland, you work to satisfy their wishes. If you get kidnapped and reprogrammed by the UPP or CLF, you serve their interests. But most of the time, you are a synth of the USCM, and your goal is to help the marines secure and protect colonies through your labor and loyalty to the cause.

While it is nice to have some special quirks to help stand out, a quirk shouldn't be something that edges on griefing.
Sometimes, bravery comes from the most unlikely sources.

I agree with you, my dudes.
Can change to 99% of the time if you wish. I actually plan to throw dices and play "borderline" if I land on a 1/100.

Denied.

For the reasons stated by others, way too edgy.
