Announcing my retirement.

Post by Abbysynth » 20 May 2016, 08:20

Hi everybody,

Neither coding nor playing CM isn't fun anymore so I am quitting for good. I tried to work on the CQC update this week and barely got anything done due to many negative factors, including hostile players and staff who feel they need to cater to them. I kept second guessing myself and rewriting it, which never happened before because I thought nobody cared about stuff like that (certainly not me).

My behavior's been pretty bad lately because I do not back down and the nitpicking culture arrived here with nothing to stop it from spreading. Remember when we used to do stuff like spooky events with ghosts and noises and stuff? People would flip their shit over that stuff today! Short answer is if the game's not fun then it's not a game, it's work. I'm really spending my free time on work for no benefit?

I'm facing an increasingly hostile player base and admin team and it's because of stuff I've done. If the choice is either to change who I am as a person or stop coding, I am going to stop coding. I spent about 500 hours on coding Alpha when I came on board and none of that ever felt like work. Head staff recently had a few choices to make, and in my opinion they chose the wrong ones.

So as of today, I quit and will not be coming back. Thanks for the good times.

CQC update will not happen and neither will xeno update, unless someone else does them. Sorry.

Well, sorry to see you go. Hopefully you can find fun in whatever work you seek. Even with some of things you've done, I think we can all agree that CM would be nothing like it is without your and the rest of the DEV team's work. We all sincerely thank you for that. It may seem like everyone including myself is a whiner but it's because we care for the server more than most, it manifest itself in hate toward some changes, because everyone has their own idea of what CM is/should be. Never the less, we appreciate your and the rest of the DEV team's efforts enormously even if it never seems like we do.

Hey Abby, thanks for bringing up the issues about nitpicking culture and seriousness. I totally agree with you.

I have noticed it is hard to connect to people here socially and people are being way too serious over a damn game! Even though we have extremely good regulation on how events are done, how abusive staff and bad behavior is dealt with, PEOPLE ARE STILL NOT HAPPY. And it is impossible to satisfy everyone no matter how serious / professional / nitpicking / organized the stuff are made here. I have been really wondering why making events is such a big taboo here, I have honestly almost never seen even admins making any events. People (staff and players) are treating each other like we would be in a government institution/parliament, even though this is a gaming community.

That is one reason why this is not the only community I hang around on. Even the staff feels very distant and literal to me, only people I have enjoyed being around in the staff is limited to Jackserious and some other mods/mapper. In addition to that, I also enjoy talking to some laid-back players (you might guess who they are) and that´s it.

I personally never understood why people complain about their round being ruined by events or admins messing around. To me, the engine blowing up twenty minutes in ruins the round. Admins blowing a hole in the hallway/spawning space carp/turning all the armor into dresses three hours into a long round makes things entertaining. I think people need to relax a little, we're here to have fun after all.

Anyway, thanks for all you've done to get us this far, Abby. You will definitely be missed.

This whole situation makes my head hurt. Combination of people needing to lighten up, while others need to thicken their skins. Like it or not Abby was clearly a driving force behind the development of CM, so I really question where it's going to go from here. Rough.

I will always miss you Abby, Shame to lose a great Dev member. I'm actually appalled at the state of CM at the moment, TOO many hostile people, Kinda why I've been off it for acouple of weeks.

If you don't like a place, don't stay!

Good on you for sticking to your guns and not staying somewhere you feel stressed/raked over the coals and overworked for little reward.

It's the same reason I'm permabanned by my own request on a couple servers. :)

Well definitly miss you, but k ow that your always welcome back. There has been more drama than usual lately which has affected everyone negativly. Hopefully, you'll be interested in rejoining us in the near future, after things calm down.
For now, I'll be stepping back more into development to work on the Xeno update and some other projects we've got going on. We are also going to start bringing on some more dev staff. Abby was a big force behind our development, and we'd be very different today without her, however while updates may slow. They won't stop.

Well I can't say I didn't see this coming. I haven't been privy to the entire backdrop that is what staff deal with up until recently, and having seen it I'm not sure what to say... I honestly think everyone is in the wrong and more than one stupid choice was made by all involved. I'm sad to see you go since I never got a chance to really chat with you and you seem like a pretty fun person, even similar to myself in a few ways. Regardless, this is probably for the best. I wish you well in all that you do, and luck as well. May your days be happy ones.

I'm gonna agree with grypho here. I feel as if we've devolved from a community that sticks together over a game, and instead have turned into something of spite and hate, which upsets me. Losing abby upsets me a great deal, because without her work, I would not have this amazing server to play on. And as stated by allan, if we lose our head dev, shit is inevitably going to bite us in the ass. May not be now, may not be immediately, but this is going to hurt us one way or another.

TL;DR, I'm very sad to see abby go, and no matter what anyone does, it's not good enough, and they'll voice it rudely.
