Departing Colonial Marines

Post by forwardslashN » 01 May 2017, 21:03

I am leaving CM. This is not a sudden decision, and it has been in progress for a while now. I am handing over my duties to BMC777 over the next week or two, after which I will be permanently departing CM. I may check in once in a while, but I will no longer be active, and I will not return as a developer for any foreseeable future.

Don't take that to mean that CM is falling apart, or that things are bad. On the contrary, I am leaving because I feel that CM is stronger than ever now, right now, and it's finally time that I can retire and look forward to something else. I have learned a lot from my tenure with Colonial Marines, both as a player and developer, and I have met many great people. It's an experience that will stick with me for a while, and it is hard moving on. But it's time to do it. I feel that I have done as much I could have, and it's up to someone else to take over and carry my work into the future, to build upon it, and to make something even better.

As you have seen with the Almayer, the development team can really come together and make something great, and I want that to be the highlight of my stay with CM. There are many things I wish I could have implemented or fixed or commented on, but that is unfortunately not going to happen now. The truth of development is that it's a very lengthy process, and many ideas do not make it to the finish line. I will say one thing, however: Before I leave, I want to run that long-awaited hugger removal test #2 and then implement the changes into the main branch of the game. So look forward to that this week or the next. Beyond that, I make no promises.

If you want to get involved, if you're thinking about it, now's the time. The team is stronger than ever, more organized than before, featuring a collection of raw talent and skill. Remember that unless someone wants to change something for the better, and actually does so, things will stay the same. Get motivated, get involved, and make that dream a reality, whatever it may be.

As for me, best wishes for 2017, and have a great summer.

I actually feel bad you're leaving x___x

You're actually very enjoyable to have around, whatever you're doing.
We can feel that confidence and know-how that you have wherever you go and that really motivates people into respecting you. Whatever happen, keep that up and hope you have a great one.

Sincerely wish to see again, see you around.
CM was obviously inspired by Starcraft: Ghost opening. At least when marines takes too long to deploy.

We didn't talk at all outside work so I don't know much about you. Although, I can say that without you and the rest of your Developer ilk I'd have nothing to Moderate. So thank you for all the countless hours you put into making this game, and in turn this community, flourish.

Wish you the best of luck.

Well mate, I don't blame yuh for wanting to get away from CM after so long. Must get boring seeing the same thing day after day, right?

Hopefully you'll get to find something new and fresh to occupy you. Maybe a new SS13 server? A gaming project? Maybe even a more humble hobby? However you choose to spare your free time now, may it be enjoyable and refreshing.

It's as if one of the four tethers keeping CM grounded was suddenly cut...

All doomsaying aside, sad to see you go. Best of luck wherever your feet happen to carry you next. o7

I didn't get to interact with you that much, but I respected you for your abilities, and the few times I did get to speak with you, you were friendly and professional. I really hope that wherever you end up, you'll be able to forget all the mentally scarring things that've been discussed on Slack, and I wish you good luck.

Being a dev is hard work, which many players don't get to see behind the scenes, but we have all enjoyed the content/updates/bugfixes you have put out. You have my deepest respect, and I wish you all the best in future.

This is something I have been saying to people for a long time, It's always been my go to phrase for dead chat salt, "If you are going to complain, why not do it in a constructive way?", "If you want X so bad, why not apply for dev and make it yourself?" so on and so forth.

Anyways I didn't expect this at all, you struck me as the type of person that would, I don't know, always be here? Despite us not interacting that much, but well, I have a history of lurking. Anyways I wish you the best of luck, and I wouldn't be on staff currently if it wasn't for you, and it has been such a positive experience so far, so thanks for that. I hope to still see you on the forums or ingame from time to time. Maybe even +1 a certain future application of mine. Writing a more unique ramped up background as we speak! *nudge nudge*. Nah but in all seriousness and joking aside, people move on, and I'm glad you feel content and completed with your contributions to the server, and honestly CM wouldn't be where it is today without you.

I suppose in conclusion, if I wanted to join development. (As I actually thought about it before being a mod), where would I start? and I mean, really start? Coding, I took a school class years ago and I forgot most of it, and I've heard byond coding is a monster. Spriting, never done it, but I can draw, sorta related? Maybe? Just curious what you might recommend as a starting point to learning things so I can eventually help the server in a more... mechanical way? I have all these ideas and well, it'd be nice to have the opportunity to actually make them a reality instead of just ideas, put simply.

Good luck with whatever the future holds, and all that.

Noize has been here for a while. I've never seen him do anything but put his all into helping grow the server. He'll be missed, but he should also be remembered.
