A note about problematic player saves and lost logs

Post by Rahlzel » 24 Jun 2018, 20:34

Just so we're all on the same page, and because it's likely this issue could be seen as convenient should it happen at the "right" time:

For about a year now we've had an intermittent problem with the server when it has been on for too long, like a slow memory leak. It happens approximately weekly, give or take a few days. It will not load from or save to text files of any kind, including admin permissions, player saves, and logs. Player saves return to the point before the problem, which means for most players they are returned in full. It's like playing a game and having it crash before you can reach a save point. You lose everything you've done but everything up to that point is saved. Unfortunately, logs take the biggest beating because there's new data attempting to be saved to them constantly.

One of our goals is to switch to a more modern database system that should prevent this issue completely. There also might be a way to auto reboot weekly at round-end using our Map Daemon. In the meantime, if you log in and see your player save is gone (and there aren't any posts about needing to wipe saves), you can rest assured that it will come back after the server reboots which will hopefully be soon - this is a pretty major issue that I'll want to hop on and fix. There are some exceptions, such as near the end of a round. You also may want to get in the habit of getting better logs yourself, such as screenshots and copying the chat log in case they are needed for reports. ShareX (free) is pretty awesome for screenshots. OBS Studio is arguably the best free software for recording video. You can then clip up relevant video using Avidemux (also free) and post it on Streamable (also free), or similar.

I apologize for the inconvenience and I look forward to going godmode and killing everyone when the logs stop saving

I have no idea what you're talking about. It doesn't look like anything to me.

reasonably informing the player base of a problem, its planned solution, and a current troubleshoot fix for the time being

what a foreign concept
