Domain change

Post by Rahlzel » 14 Jul 2018, 18:34

We're moving to a new domain - cm-ss13.com.

As mentioned in a previous announcement, this is due to correspondence with a lawyer working for Fox. Nothing has been filed, the lawyer and I are just chatting about what Fox wants.

EDIT: You'll need to empty your browser cache and do a hard reload in order to get the website to correctly redirect from colonial-marines to cm-ss13.

Thanks for your patience.

P.S. Nothing official as yet, but we may be in need of a new logo soon, too.

Sometime in the future would it be possible for us to see the correspondences after we’ve satisfied the conditions they have? I have a genuine curiosity in how this process is working

They ask politely enough for things until either they are satisfied or you decide that they overstepped what they have rights to ask for.

Then either they agree that that's enough (Hilariously unlikely), Threaten you with a lawsuit to see if you buckle (a cease and desist), or straight up sue you (also unlikely, as threatening you is free).

Then if you still don't back off or they went from nice to sue they file in court somewhere that tends to favor plaintiffs in this type of case (Trademark infringement mostly, Fox owns the licensing rights outright)

Hopefully, that's not the case and Fox gets happy with us moving away from their brand.

Though it may be unlikely, but the fact that they are working with us means that they're willing for us to keep CM.

Could change the sprites, and lore in game and completely step away from the aliens universe should that come to pass.

The real problem is going to be once Disney fully takes over Fox, they take copyright very very seriously.
Lucasfilm used to have a friendly policy "You can make Star Wars mods as long as you don't profit and make money from it." Now that Disney owns them, forget it, if you make any Star Wars mod, expect to get a cease and desist

The sad part is that they'll eventually just cease and deist us entirely, so enjoy the game as it is while you can.

We were truly live in a golden era of the internet, and it's slowly fading

Yeah knowing Di$ney is now at the helm, any relation to the alien franchise is going to be shortlived. Best to start cranking out unique sprites for our Barines to flight Zliens in Spess

It's actually still possible for people to make Star Wars related mods for games. Off the top of my head, I can name three games that have multiple Star Wars-themed mods that aren't getting squeezed by Disney. I suppose it all depends on if they choose to take the fact the CM team accepts donations to maintain the server as making money off it or not.

The content we have is so heavily derivative that its pretty much novel. I think it would be pretty easy to detach from the original IP it it were demanded.

Of course what the lawyers consider detached could be completely unreasonable. If it were someone like nintendo they would try to destroy the project entirely.

The situation isn't a ticking timebomb, but rather unexploded live ordnance, which has potential to be perfectly okay.

The colonial-marines.com domain name has now been retired altogether since everyone has likely had time to adjust to the change.
