Remove marine reliance on planet-side communications systems

Post by Youbar » 14 Dec 2016, 20:13

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): Currently, marines are reliant on the communications systems on the ground, making them a dependent, rather than independent fighting force. I'm suggesting that this reliance be removed, so that regardless of whether the colony itself has communications systems in place, they can still operate. This makes sense from a military perspective, in that the marines couldn't always rely on local infrastructure when conducting an operation. Instead, communications should take place back and forth from the Sulaco, as they logically would in the 22nd century, with likely faster than light radio waves.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): The marines are not left in the dark if the colony's telecommunications fall apart, whether it be from griefing, or aliens. This will not be the case for Sulaco telecommunications, however.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Telecommunicatons can be placed outside the map, but within the same Z-level, to give the illusion that communications are pinging back and forth from the Sulaco, rather than relying on the colony systems.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Place telecommunications outside the map, but within the same Z-level.

+1, always confused me how you had to set up comms (though, to be fair, it does make for a nice engineering objective)

Isn't there technically one outside the map already? Or are you reffering to another map that doesn't have it?

I think he means in all the non-LV624 maps. You have to either restore power or fix any damage the towers may have obtained.

Honestly, when I am playing ice map/Big Red as CO, my main tactic is to send less squads down first and quickly set up power so comms come back on before sending more marines down.

I always found it to be a clusterfuck nightmare when you have 3 squads all crammed into a single dropship and another squad on a pod, and everyone goes down and gets mixed up and you can't rally your damn squad because everyone loses eachotherandlg=aghdalhgaldjh.

I'd rather just send 2 squads down now and two squads later.
