The enemy cannot press a button if you disable his hand (Make throwing knifes good)

Post by DankAnimemes » 08 Feb 2017, 12:57

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):
I think we have all scrolled through the marine vendors and noticed the throwing knife, and throwing knife belt. We have then proceeded to grab our boot knife and move on. I think the throwing knifes should be improved, so they are at least considered as a viable tool.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
It will add a unique weapon for the marines that would have considerable utility and encourage teamwork. It will also make a waste of code decent. It will also punish xenos for rushing in solo, by making it slightly harder for them to escape.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):
Change throwing knifes so that if they hit a xeno, they have a chance (Modified by the xenos class and age) to stick in the xeno and inflict some small temporary debuffs.
Drones, Runners, and sentinels would all have a 90% chance of the knife sticking. Hunters, Spitters, Carries and Hivlords have a 75% chance. Ravager, Crusher, Boiler and praetorian have a 50% chance. The queen would have a 20% chance. This chance would decrease by 5% each time they upgrade.
The knife would inflict temporary debuffs including.
A minor slow
A "Bleeding" effect that does slight DOT and leaves a blood trail
These effects would also apply to marines, so FF is still a danger. To balance this knifes that succesfully stick in a xeno will be destroyed by the acid blood at the end of the effects duration. The knife effects would also stack so getting hit by multiple knifes is a threat to low level xenos. Overall this would make what is currently a gimmick item, into a viable combat option. Its reduced effect to high level xenos, as well as the limited use keeps it balanced.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
It could be implemented by adding additional code to that which already exists for throwing knifes, and making that code also apply to the xenos.

leaning towards -1

Why does the chance decrease when the Target becomes Larger? (a Small Runner has 90% hit chance while Queen which is bigger is only 20%?), if it's for balancing sure but it still bothers me in the IC logic.

Also throwing knives, I think shouldn't be used in front line battles because it would look sorta weird when some of the marines are trying to take down a Giant crusher by throwing knife at it instead of using guns and other things. but this is my opinion.

i think the decrease is beacuse of increased armor of the tier's as they increase. increasing the chance the knife will bounce off with no effect

That does make sense,

but that would mean a Boilers are equal to crushers and ravagers in armor type against throwing knives. Percentage should be based on the armor level of different ayys then. Still kinda don't like the idea though.

I appreciate the feedback. I think rather than the numbers I originally gave, the numbers should be based on the armor level of the alien itself. The boiler who I imagine to be rather soft, could actually be weaker then some others.

Throwing knives are better for human encounters, they're good against T1s and T2s but they're not good enough. I don't use them because it's way too risky and I'd reserve them for when I'm nested. -1

FF would increase, xenos would end up keeping those knives (not that you'd want them back) and let's be real, you're most likely going to miss or kill your own teammates.

Actually never mind changing this to a +1 Marines deserve some sort of reward for throwing a steel blade into a 7 foot tall insectoid creature with a penis shaped head

Well if the devs didn't want marines using it, then they shouldn't have added throwing knives in the first place.

They should either be buffed to be an actually viable alternative to getting a ammo rig.

Or removed since they are just a gimmick item with no real gameplay value over picking a ammo rig for the 6 extra mags for your M4A1 or shell holder for your shotty.

They're meant for HUMANS and PREDS not xenos both of which they make quick work of.

Experienced preds will just catch them and then shrek you; and when was the last time anyone used throwing knives against Preds?

For humans, most of the people you are facing have AP or weapons that fuck you up significantly (Death Squad, Sniper Rifle IB).

Yah, i will say, anyone who chooses a throwing knife over a gun in real life is gonna have a tough fight on average (nevermind preds, trained troops, killer aliens). But, Rule of Cool is in play here, and i hope we abide by it.

But seriously, does uh, anyone know the way out?!

Neutral, leaning towards -1

On one hand I agree with the sentiment that somebody should be rewarded with managing to land a throwing knife in a xeno. On the other hand if throwing knives are buffed to be useful against xenos I just picture a full squad of marines throwing knives and how ridiculous and RP breaking that would be. Frankly I'd be much more in favor of a complete removal of them from the game as they seem like a worthless gimmick that takes up space in the vendor.
