Timed Jobbans

Post by NoahKirchner » 14 Mar 2017, 01:29

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):Add timed jobbans for people who are new or have a minor mess up for the first time, mess up, but not bad enough to warrant a permanent jobban.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): It will allow more flexible punishments, especially for new players. IE a medic committing suicide at roundstart, a queen going SSD, or a xeno nest-slashing a host. They didn't read the rules, and this will be a nudge to go read them, but they won't have to go through the appeal process to be able to play the role afterwards.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):I am not entirely sure how you would accomplish it, but I know that I've seen it on other servers (obviously not a reason to implement it on its own), and it appears to work from what I can gather. It'd streamline the ban process and make the game a little bit more inviting to new players who don't read the rules and mess up, while still maintaining a firm stance on "ignorance is not an excuse"

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Some change to the jobban code.

+1 Jobban is acting like a permanant banned... it shouldn't be unless it's major issue of you are doing.

+1 Every other community has this, it'd cut down on staff time dealing with forum issues, situations where a permanent job ban are required can easily be given instead of the less minor ones.

All the perm-bans do is make everything needlessly bureaucratic and a drain on time for all those involved.

+1

They should get a ban, but just because a MD was using a rifle once, does not mean they should never be allowed to play that role without appealing again.

There's going to have to be exceptions to this. The only time someone should recieve a timed jobban is when it has to do with connection (logging out at round start or as an important role), as these are often out of the player's control and our general player base consists of teenagers.

Jobbans are issued when people abuse their role to break rules, or perform under the standard, like an MP extending a prisoners time for transgressions that do not exist in Marine Law, or a CMO breaking into RnD to make a grenade. These interrupt other player's enjoyment and if it goes unpunished, influences other players to behave in the same manner or even create metagriefing/hostile tendencies.
You will never be as bad as the baldie who picked up a tactical shotgun while a hunter was pouncing on top of a CMO for 4 seconds, with his only response being to pace around before being decap'd by said hunter. You are not Brett Kimple, and you never will be. You are not the reason why I regular MP.

In theory, yes, permanent jobbans should work like this. But also, connection issues, relatively minor first offenses (they should not be let off by any circumstances, ignorance is not an excuse), and other such "thing" (no idea what to call them) all have to fall under the permanent jobban bit because there is no alternative.

Basically every people who got jobbanned going to give a +1.... even the whole community... if you are going to Jobban someone who just broken ONE rule... why permanant? Give it a week, month, day, hours, year(seem like permanant lul)

Also... I can see why Jobban is permanant... they go back to NOTES from the previous past and add this up so they can make you permanant..

-1 permanent jobbans are incentive to follow the rules. Like Snype said, ignorance is not an excuse.

The only people who bear the real brunt of dealing with jobban appeals are staff, and we understand it's part of the job. Plus, we usually lift appeals that are based off connection issues.

Fair enough, I'm not a staff and I didn't know if always having to lift jobbans due to connection issues got annoying, figured it might help streamline the process.

Also, I hear it might have to involve some SQL database funkiness.

Though it would pose a good system in something situational, it does serve as a punishment for those that don't deserve to play the position because they broke the rules or blatantly tried to troll and grief the round with the position. Some people should get a second chance after a certain amount of time based on the situation but that should be up for the staff to decide. I know some friends that were 'perm banned' but after like two years they were unbanned.(lol)

For this to be implemented it would really be up to the upper management and their feelings on punishments and if something warrants and perm job ban or a partial one.

+1 I was jobbanned from xeno and my appeal was denied.

I feel like most of the people who would +1 this are people who have gotten job banned so there is some serious bias for this suggestion. Beyond those people I feel like the staff would be the only opinions that really carry some sway here and I kind of doubt many of them would be in favor of a fairly large relaxing of the rules like this. I have no idea of the complexities that go into being a staff member on the server and any non-staff are probably in that same boat. That being said I don't really see the benefit of making suggestions regarding the changing of punishments seeing as it is a staff matter and I imagine they discuss these sorts of things in their Fortress of Solitude out of the sight of us normies.

I can't speak for the other people, and while I have been jobbanned previously I'm of the mind that they probably should've been applied more liberally. Regardless, it was a suggestion not to how the rules would be enforced, but offering an alternative that maybe hadn't been considered previously. If the staff don't like it then they can shoot it down.
