Shell Bandolier

Post by Mycroft Macarthur » 30 Aug 2015, 09:15

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): a new vest item as an alternative to the shoulder holster or ILBE would be added

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): it would only really be beneficial to shotgun users at this time but overall make their jobs infinitely easier

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): basically this would be a new vest item that would be meant to store shotgun shells.....and nothing else, it would not be able to carry ANY item larger then a shotgun shell, by default it could not receive any other item at ALL but i can see arguments for allowing it to carry flares and other small items like pens, cigarettes and so on (perhaps even a lighter, you know, for smoking with)

the way it would work is, this item would have a carrying capacity of 21 slots, a player would put shells into the vest, when it was time to reload their shotgun they would remove shells from the vest (same as any container) and load their shotgun as regular, some people may think that an item capacity of 21 items in a vest is obscene but in reality thats actually what the current vests hold already, the ILBE can hold 3 items and if each of those items is a box of shotgun shells then you already have 21 shotgun shells inside the vest (7 times 3), the ONLY difference is that this would be infinitely more convenient for shotgun users to reload on the go. (this also applies to REGULAR boxes as well, which hold 7 items each)

let me compare

this way you would go out there fighting the aliens, fire however many shells you need and when you have a moment you would just take individual shells from your bandolier and load them into your gun one by one and you would be free to continue engaging the enemy this way until your bandolier ran out (at which time you would have to restock it, a bigger annoyance when out of combat for infinitely greater convenience IN combat)

as it is NOW you would have to keep boxes in your armor, vest, backpack or belt, remove the box and then reload the shotgun at much greater inconvenience, you COULD keep a box in your pocket slot but aside from losing one of the all important pocket slots these boxes only carry 7 shells inside them which isn't even enough to fill a shotgun to maximum capacity (8 rounds plus one in the chamber) by default so if you see much combat your pocket box is almost always half empty or only carrying two shells anyways, the more steps any process has the harder it is to do in combat.

its a pretty small suggestion overall, just another container type item but such a simple addition could mean ALOT to people who fight with shotguns.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): this would probably utilize similar code as the ammo cans did in pre alpha, the only difference being it could only hold items of tiny size (or whatever size shotgun shells happen to be)

+1 This would really help in some situations as I even carry a shotgun some times with 3 boxes.

in addition, if they ever add other weapons which are/can be reloaded one bullet at a time (this would be especially applicable to certain types of rifle and revolver) then you could use this for the same purpose, in the grand scheme most bullets actually arent that large and have comparable sizes, if you want to argue that most bullets are ALOT smaller then shells (which is true, shells tend to be wide and short whereas bullets are usually long and thin) then just say the vest is made of nylon or spandex or any other stretchy material, i mean its true anyways, its alot cheaper then leather is and you wouldn't need to use it for the WHOLE bandolier, most tactical items are made of several different fabrics because each different fabric is great for different purposes and theres nothing wrong with that.

+1, I'd love one for rockets, too. Perhaps that can just hold 3-4, because, y'know, rockets are bigger than shotgun shells.

Throwing in my +1,

Maybe it could go into the belt slot, like the grenade bandoleer, if the jumpsuit slot is contested.

Only concern I have about it is the fact that, when you open it, you have half your screen filled with the bandoleer's menu. Other than that, all for it!

+1. An easy solution to the screen half full issue is to only have 8 shells visible at all times, less clutter.

well thats basically how the ammo can worked and really it doesn't take up nearly as much space as you would figure so even if it didn't work like that i think it'd still work out

+1

Though with all of the new additions to cargo, we may have to lower the costs or increase the rate at which they gain points for orders.

•Under barrel, rail, muzzle attachments.
•Webbing and jumpsuit accessories (Bandolier would go here.
• Explosives
• Incinerators
• Surgery/Medical
• More stuff.
• Even more stuff.

And all of it is needed at once. You'd think RO would have ALL of this stuff already and would only need to restock, rather than not have these things to begin with and have to order them.

With the nex boxes holding 14 shells each one, and the webbing still being capable of 3 boxes, will this be upped to 42 shells? Maybe clicking with the box on the bandolier loads all the shells, and clicking it with the shotgun auto loads it, holding flares and that is covered by helmet storage threads, so...

How about, something that replaced belts, went across the body, and could hold 60 shotgun shells?

Perhaps add a reload verb to that as well, that acts like the Smartgun Reload system - so that dedicated shotguns might actually be a little more useful.

Probably not a verb, I think that might be over-the-top. Unless, I made it a "backpack" instead, and had it be a double-cross across the body...

Given you can take shells out of a box that is in your pocket, I don't really see the utility of this. I mean, I use the shotgun often, and ... sixty shells? Might be lucky to get through a quarter of that, before death or loss of weapon occurs, with the slow rate of fire and slow reloading.

If it fit in the belt-slot perhaps, and you could reload ala smartgun method with clicking the shotgun onto the bandolier, a TBD-pause to refill the shotgun, sure. You would still have to refill the vest same as the shotgun as presently, individual shells pressed into it. But it would make reloading/shell management a lot more bearable, what with the annoying clicking back and forth in heat of battle. Using a backpack slot for this however would not make it worthwhile really.
