Operational Order for Commander

Post by quarantinetimer » 13 Feb 2016, 11:24

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary):Currently, a message *an automatic distress signal has been received, the sulaco has been dispatched...* is all the players see at round start. Nothing else is known aside from the fact that *something* is wrong and the marines have to investigate. I think HHQ would actually transmit and OPORD to the commander with a little more detail on the exact situation.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):
This can give new commanders some guidance as to how to conduct the briefing, while not railroading them into one single course of action, as the commander can still make plans based off the operational order. It would probably enhance RP and immersion by adding more military flavour.
Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc):.
An piece of paper titled *OPORD (index here)* would be transmitted through the commander's fax machine at round start, and the commander would be expected to read it with the rest of command and formulate a plan for the mission. The OPORD will use the 5-paragraph SMEAC format.
Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):
Lore work on creating the OPORD contents with help from players who are military veterans. (Yes, apophis, you are one of them). And code work to spawn the paper on the commander's fax machine.

I prefer to put the OPORD in the communications console.

I don't see any reason as to why this cannot be implemented, really. Plus, more of that military feel is actually welcome.

I like this a lot. I mean listening to any enough commanders you tend to get the gist of it, but I think having an action OPORD would be a welcome addition.

For those of us who have not seen the style, can you do a mock up for us, to see how it will look?

(I am not a veteran, so I won't pretend to know how to write one. I expect veterans will write the final version if implemented.)
The following is a simplified and modified version of an OPORD. Do not use for reference in real life circumstances.
CLASSIFIED
Copy no. 2 of 6 copies
2nd Battalion, 9th regiment
Orbital Fort Osney
071203(Z)APR50
FAR (GL0318)
OPORD 1-35
Reference:SATMAP, LAZARUS LANDING, LV-624, GALILEO 69 XMIT
Time Zone Used throughout : Zulu
Task Organization:
HHD, 2nd Plt
1st section
2nd Section
Combat Support Section

1. SITUATION
An automatic distress signal has been received from Lazarus Landing Colony, LV-624. USS Sulaco Dispatched.

FRIENDLY FORCES:
1x USCM Rifle Platoon (with attachments)

Aerospace Wing
1x Conestoga Class Troop Transport Ship
2x UD-4L Cheyenne Dropship (1 modified for precision drop operations)

ENEMY FORCES:
Unknown: Assume- a.Pirates in sufficient number have raided the colony b.A severe incident has crippled the colony. c. A colony rebellion has taken place. Expect light infantry.

2.MISSION
2nd Platoon will conduct investigation and elimination of distress cause at Lazarus Landing Colony.

3.EXECUTION
Commander's Intent:
Purpose:Resolve the problem leading to the lost of contact with Lazarus Landing Colony.
Key Tasks:The entire colony must be swept through and secured.
All survivors of the incident must be rescued.
Endstate:The incident is resolved with minimal losses and control of colony returned to Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

Scheme of Maneuver:
The infantry platoon, split into 4 squads, are to be deployed on the UD-4L dropships via orbital insertion, touching down on the two marked LZs. The platoon will then enter the colony and secure all structures. Prosecute all enemies. Details will be decided at commander's initiative.

Fire Support Plan:
USS Sulaco will insert at geosynchronous orbit and at optimal fire spread angle to provide orbital artillery support.

4.ADMINISTRATION/LOGISTICS

a.Administration
MEDEVAC plan: CCPs will be set up adjacent to marked LZs which will also serve as PZs. Casualties will be evacuated and treated on board the Sulaco.
EPW plan: EPWs will be secured and handed to MPs aboard the Sulaco and brought to sector holding camps for processing post mission.

b.Logistics
Supplies will be stored aboard the Sulaco. The standard combat load will be carried by personnel. Supplies will be delivered to marines via orbital drop.

5.Command/Signal
USCM SOP

It can even have multiple variations with slight differences which will be randomly chosen which to spawn, just to further refine the possible feature. Any more opinions on this?

I like it, it gives the CO the feeling of being a part of a larger machine rather than king of the ship. It'll also help the command staff figure out tasks that can be assigned to marines rather than just "Make a FOB" and "Kill shit" +1

If we can have veteran input on this and write us a more realistic OPORD, this will surely get fast-tracked.

Cant really say I am that much a veteran because I have only completed conscription, but yeah this is how it goes in real army. Enlisted / marines know nothing, squad leaders know where to go but nothing else, lieutenant, might know the reason of mobilization but still has limited information of what are the actual events, and company commander knows the most. It is used as a motivation trick for lower ranks who will do the heavy stuff that their knowledge of bad things is at minimum before they arrive to the scene.

+1 I like this idea, and would be newbie-friendly for first time commanders too.

Special bump order: Is there no more interest? Or was it just bad timing? At the very least, if this has been denied, someone should officially close this. If not, continue the debate.

+1 Seems pretty cool. Heck it can just be a paper spawned in the CO's room or on the bridge. Should be simple enough.

Why the hell would the CL be given objectives to steal this? WY already knows what the operation is about anyway, since they told the USCM about the distress signal first.
