Unweld vents w/ acid?

Post by Verarch » 09 Mar 2016, 19:22

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): You invade the Sulaco, or spawn as a larva on it, and evolve into a drone to plant your weeds, yet marines frantically weld vents. You right-click on a vent, vomit your acid on it to unweld it after some time. This could take a different amount of plasma, different amount of time, or different method of application.

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole):It will really help with being born as an alien on the Sulaco and being spotted moving throughout vents. Vents are the safest method of moving around, so you shouldn't just be restricted to that. Melting vents open would help, for one, protect against meta-weld (which is rare), or more practically, make surviving on a ship full of heavily armed marines, 1v45, a bit easier for the alien.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): So, you right-click on a vent, and you apply acid to it. This process would take either A) more time, B) more plasma [probably more coding needed then], or C) require periodic application of acid to be successful, considering it may realistically fall due to gravity. This'd help with making your way through the ship, and apply some risk/reward. You'd be exposing yourself to move to the welded vent, yet in the long-run, you get an additional vent to crawl through.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it):I'm not very experienced with coding in BYOND, but I suppose you could add a different option for vents as its own classification. For example, you can melt some loose items, like guns (meltable), however can not melt floodlights (non-meltable). Maybe there could be a separate category for vents, having different requirements to melt, and a different process of melting.
Then again, that's just an idea. I'm not experienced in BYOND code. Could just make it run a check to see "is it a vent? if yes, replace with unwelded vent"

Will add more details if needed, and may come up with additional benefits as time goes on. I just wanted to get this down and see what people think.

Would acid opened vents be reweldable in your idea?

Totally. It wouldn't be fair to run around and melt every vent so it's stuck open.

Restrict this only to drones/spitter and return it, please. I don't understand why it was totally removed either.

Every caste used to have Corrode vent, and it was removed for some reason. Bring it back! +1.

I'd rather have the Corrode vent verb back. I'd say being able to chucklevent as you say is better than having them meta weld all the vents.

Vents are ridiculous, aliens can just repeatedly run away and instantly teleport all across sulaco/prison with one button. If you want this to be added we need the more advanced vent system other servers have, where you actually have to navigate the pipes. You don't HAVE to use vents as an alien to take over sulaco for example.

Right. If aliens get to the Sulaco, they are probably winning anyways. Having this implemented would let the round end a little bit sooner.

Not needed imo, coming from somebody who played back ye olde times of the space station map, this verb was either never used or HEAVILY used, nothing in between. Currently, marines don't weld vents enough for this to matter.

You won't see welded vents unless theres an engineer with goggles specifically putting effort into getting into places to weld vents even though he has to ask for others to open the doors. If someone goes through the trouble of welding everything it's fine imo.

They're SUPPOSED to win when on the sulaco, as stated by apop.

Feeling a bit -1 on this even though I play almost exclusively alien these days. As it is the instant teleport basically means you can scout out the Sulaco levels as fast as you can select through the area box. I'd be fine with this if ventcrawling required moving through the actual vents or had more of a time delay, but I don't think it's necessary considering how strong vents are right now.

We did had the unweld vents, but it was removed since it just resulted in such a pain for the rounds, and some castes should not have had it tbh, some even could not afford it (runner)
