in-hand sprites for uniforms

Post by Valterak » 29 Mar 2016, 04:54

Summary (a quick, 2-3 sentence summary): I noticed that a lot of the uniforms for the marines and crew didn't have any in-hand sprites, so I made some. http://puu.sh/nXVjX/933f1666a2.dmi

Benefits (How this will benefit the server and game as a whole): Hey, I like small details like this, I'm sure other people do too.

Details (Description of how you think this would work, the benefits, etc): Basically like any other in-hand sprite.

Implementation (Optional, if you have an idea how to implement it): Additions to the icon files + some code? I don't actually know how it works.

Could you post a .png for quick reference?

Pretty good - what's not to like?

I was informed earlier that we are nearing the limit for icons unfortunately.

Yup, we are near the limit for in hand sprites. It would be wise to make our own system to support multiple .dmi files instead of just one. The override_icon thing is very bad.

Might be advantageous to compress all uniforms into one generic hand held item? Do the same for marine armor and helmets. I'm also sure there is a crapton of old assets that can be purged.

I fixed the .dmi limit. We can now have unlimited icons crammed in multiple files.

Hadn't this already been added to the game?

There is no limit on icons, the limit you are seeing in the editor is a soft limit that could easily be avoided by splitting inhand files, heck you don't even need two pairs of inhands because you can just use matrix transformations to get the l/r hand variations.
