Should we add enforced Radio Chatter?

Post by DeadLantern » 12 Aug 2016, 21:40

I have been very involved with the USA's military and my family has too. My Father was in the Navy, my sister wants to join the Navy as well, and my Brother is a Radio Operator for the Army. What that means is that he transmits and listens to the Platoon's Radio Chatter. It is VERY important because without communication, you can't do things. He is in charge of that, and is named the RO for Radio Operator. He receives a message and transmits it. Now, with the real Army, you have to maintain a strict guideline of what to say. Here's a quick and VERY brief guideline of slang, orders, and other info. Please be aware that this does not even pick the surface, this is just the basics of Radio Communication in the Army.
The Diffrent Names:
ALPHA
BRAVO
CHARLIE
DELTA
ECHO
FOXTROT
GOLF
HOTEL
INDIA
JULIETT
KILO
LIMA
MIKE
NOVEMBER (sometimes referred as NOVA)
OSCAR
PAPA
QUEBEC
ROMEO
SIERRA
TANGO
UNIFORM
WHISKEY
XRAY
ZULU
NOTE: THESE NAMES ARE USED FOR EVERYTHING: BASES, BUILDINGS, SQUADS, AND MORE. THEY ARE INTERCHANGEABLE.

Numbers:
ZE-RO (0)
WUN (1)
TOO (2)
T(H)REE (3)
FOW-ER (4)
FIFE (5)
SIX (6)
SEV-EN (7)
AIT (8)
NIN-ER (9)
(THE UNDERLINED PRONUNCIATIONS ARE DIFFRENT FROM THE REGULAR PRONUNCIATIONS.)

RADIOTELEPHONE PROCEDURES:
ALL AFTER: THE PORTION OF THIS MESSAGE THAT IS AFTER 'ALL AFTER'. e.g This is Hunter 2-2! All After is considered classified info! Over!
ALL BEFORE: THE PORTION OF THIS MESSAGE THAT IS BEFORE 'ALL BEFORE'. e.g This is Zulu 1-4! All Before is to be transmitted to Zulu Squad! Over!
BREAK: INDICATION THAT THIS NEXT TEXT IS DIFFRENT FROM THE PREVIOUS TEXT. A SHORT 'OVER' WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO CLARIFY 'OVER'. e.g This is Bravo 4-5! We are hitting the Russian planes, I repeat, we are hitting the Russian Planes! /Break/! We need supplies! Over!
CORRECT: YOU ARE CORRECT, OR WHAT YOU TRANSMITTED IS CORRECT. e.g This is Bravo Actual! These hostiles are Salty, over! This is Bravo 2-5, Correct!
OUT: This transmission is over and DOES NOT NEED A RESPONSE. e.g This is Echo 3-8! The Russian Bears are clawing at me! It's been an honor, Major! Out!
OVER: This Transmission is over and NEEDS A RESPONSE. e.g This is Zulu Actual! We are getting hit hard! We are in need of ammo! Over!
COPY: I HAVE READ YOUR TRANSMISSION AND UNDERSTOOD IT. e.g This is Bravo 2-1! We need some supplies with ammo, over! This is Overlord, solid Copy.
ROGER: SEE 'COPY'.
THIS IS: THIS TRANSMISSION IS FROM THE STATION WHOSE DESIGNATOR IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS.
ACTUAL: THE LEADER OF SAID COMPANY RIGHT BEFORE THE SAYING OF 'ACTUAL'.
DANGER CLOSE: WHEN ARIEL BOMBARDMENT IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE SOLDIERS ON GROUND FOR DAMAGE.
(Note, this is not all but the SOME of the IMPORTANT basic guidelines. For the ACTUAL basics, read here: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... h5.htm)

SLANG: (Phrases that are not needed but common to use.)
MIKE: 1 MINUTE.
BIRD: AN ENEMY HELICOPTER OR OTHER FLYING MACHINE. (Not needed for CM)
CLICK: 1 KILOMETER.
OSCAR MIKE: WE ARE MOVING OR, TIME TO MOVE.
411: BREIFING.
BUM FUCK EGYPT (BFE): A DROP OR A MISSION IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. USED BEST IN COLONIAL MARINES.
(Check here for more: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/Append ... tary_slang

So I just dropped a whole load of info on you. Now, my question is, should we implement this into CM? It would of course boost immersion a whole lot, but it would be very time consuming to type and remember all of this. You could always not use it for banter or shit, but most of the time you should use this. That's my idea, but how do you think? The reason I do not want to post this in suggestions is because I have no idea if anyone will like this and it's way to long to grade.
Also, here is basically what this could turn out to be: https://youtu.be/QV_C0G1KawU
( If anyone knows that one of these is wrong, blame my Brother for not remembering protocol. )

Immersion is nice and all but i highly doubt anyone would want to use this anyway. This is pretty nice though.

I already talk alot like this on radio so idk, you get used to it when all you do is play military games i guess.
You should include Interrogative, example: "Command, Interrogative, marines are reporting bla bla bla at bla bla, how copy?"

As nice as this is, I think it would be a tad excessive, mainly due to the nature of the game.

This isn't a very slow paced game. Once the xenos start pouncing, it is hard for marines to focus on keeping to the lingo. Hell, merely trying to remember all of this would be really hard. There is a reason why high RP servers are rarely populated, because some people just want to have a more casual RP experience, where they don't have to memorize a script of sorts just to play as a spess marine.

I love good RP as much as the next guy, but I can only do so much.

I was just about to edit this to add it.

Maybe we can just add enforced 'THIS IS' and 'OVER' and 'OUT's.

Enforced is honestly a rather.. Harsh word.

But I'd love to see some encouragement to get a little more into your role somewhat. Start small, go easy, let it sink into the community and then see where it goes from there.

No point enforcing something, but I guess this might be a very cool guide for those who wants to roleplay radio communications a bit better.

With all due respect, this is a foolish idea to enforce and wasteful of time and resources. Hell, half the time we were on comms in AFG we spoke plainly WRT communication. Unless you want to start mandating medics call in 9-line medevacs that nobody else fucking understands, since the average player on this server wasn't even alive when 9/11 occurred, I suggest you take a big step back from mandating any official radio chatter. Hell, people already fuck up terms in-game as well, why add more fuel to the fire for people to totally abort communications with?

Rather then engage in fobbit masturbatory fantasies about how much military lingo we know, why dont we try and use the already slow communication interface (text-based rather then verbal) to communicate information in clear, direct, and succinct ways?

Example: which is easier for you to understand, and faster for me to type?

1: LT, this is Bravo-4, 9-line as follows:

Line 1 (we dont even have grid squares) Drop pod Break
Line 2 (we all use the same radio frequencies) One Four Five Dash Seven Break
Line 3 Two-Bravo One-Charlie Break
Line 4 Alpha Break
Line 5 Lima-Two Alpha-One Break
Line 6 Papa Break
Line 7 Delta Break
Line 8 Alpha Break
Line 9 Bravo One Break

versus:

2: Two marines got fragged by and have chest fractures with lung collapse in stasis, third one is infected+walking. Send up the loaded pod and standby.

We can circlejerk over what military lingo we do or dont know, or we can attempt to communicate effectively. Its foolish to waste time with dumb shit when people wont understand it anyway.

Boy, I wish I had seen this before I spent a whole day writing a 9 liner guide on the forums.

As much as muh immersion is fun, honestly the only thing we need marines to be doing is announcing who they are, and announcing who they are speaking too.

Such as "Command this is Bravo, (message)"
Steve Humason : Squad Leader, Military Police, Squad Marine
Chroma Tuflos : Pilot Officer, Corporate Liaison

Most people who play CM couldnt care less about whether or not their lingo is correct.

I wanna play CM to shoot stuff and relax. If you want high Mil-RP go to Bay, CM isn't for this stuff.
