Chowder McArthor - Coder Application

Post by Chowder McArthor » 05 Feb 2018, 16:24

Byond ID: Chowder McArthor

Age: 19

Gender: Male

How would you define yourself? (Coder, Mapper, Spriter): Coder.

If Coder, what languages? DM mainly, but can read and write in java/C, but not proficient in them.

Any previous experience developing with SS13?
Mainly d20, one or two pushes to /tg/ station. Not a lot of public stuff however.

Proof of any previous or current work:
Check my previous thread I made a few months ago, viewtopic.php?f=68&t=15416
How well do you know Git?
Fairly well, I've worked with it on mutiple ss13 projects in the past.

Your primary job is server development, not policing the server. You may be given Moderator-level of access but you should *not* be invoking any administrative actions unless there are no moderators or Admins online. Do you understand? (Yes/No)
Yes
Anything else you'd like to add?
My last dev, I'd like to think that I should not have put spriter as one of the things I can do, as spriting is not my strong point. I am hoping that this time, without that, my application will be better.

Hey, since you're applying for coder I have four initial questions for you;

1. If someone points out a problem when reviewing your code or tells you to do a particular thing in the certain way, how would you react?

2. Someone points out a problem with a feature you've spent weeks working on and perfecting, and you're sure they're wrong, how would you deal with this?

3. What things do you see yourself coding for CM, adding features, fixing bugs, managing balance, implementing assets, optimizing code?

4. What one feature would you add to CM?

1.) I'd ask them why do it that way, to understand their reasoning, and if it's a good point, I'll try to change it.
2.) I would see first if it is a problem, ask them how it is a problem, and then modify it if they're right.
3.) Mostly machines; I like to be immersed when I play, but also have a good time while playing, so changes would either be made to add in new features to improve gameplay, modify existing ones to either work better or be more atmospheric, or quality of life things to make it less of a pain to do certain things.
4.) I'd like to see some form of research added back into the game, in any form, since Research has always been one of my favorite aspects of ss13. Most likely to start with, for simplicity's sake, a system like the old RnD system, that can provide information on aspects of xeno classes, or provide something neat that could give marines an advantage, if they have the materials, to help break stalemates that often happen late into the round.

I dont think things have changed since the last application, I think it would only damage the team oriented structure to accept this.

I would like to say that I have, and I have learned from my mistakes; I saw what I did wrong with my last application, and am willing to admit my faults with it.

The reason your application was denied before was because you did not seem like you were willing to make the sprites that were asked of you. Now, it's clear that you never intended to make sprites in the first place, even though you claimed to be a Spriter in your first app. So now I'm put in the situation where I have to decide if it is a good idea to trust a stranger with our code that has previously lied to us.

We can argue semantics, maybe you didn't lie, maybe you just fibbed a bit trying to increase the value of your app. It doesn't matter. None of our Devs should feel the need to lie or stretch the truth about their work in order to gain something. Our Devs work to the best of their abilities and they are comfortable with that.

This application is denied, the previous application is denied, any future applications you make are going to be denied. Your past work is competent enough from what you've shown, I'm sure you will find a place within the SS13 community, but due to past mistakes, it won't be here.
