Arklayin --- Moderator Application

Post by Arklayin » 29 Jun 2015, 02:17

Byond ID:Vyse11

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Timezone:CST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?: Depends on the week, 10+ usually.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?: Only on ss13, in which I trial modded Colonial several months back, and modded on a few small servers I can't remember the name of.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?: Yes.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines or New Eden denied before? : Only applied once, and was accepted as a trial mod.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?: No.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?: No.

If a player was shooting everyone in briefing at round start how would you deal with the situation?: Probably by auto-killing the player to prevent any more damage, and then messaging the player to figure out why he did that. Regardless of the answer, he gets a 24 hour minimum ban.

You notice that a xeno is breaching the Nostromo and is unable to seal it with resin. How would you deal with this and what punishment would you give for a first offender?: With no previous atmos notes, a 24 hour ban and a quick fix of the area is the best solution.

The marines want the nuke codes to detonate the Nostromo because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who. What do you do? I send a message back to him saying that they are not losing too many marines, and asking this question is silly. Don't do it again.

A Sulaco Medic has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online. What do you do? On a first offense scenario, the marine would get a 24 hour ban and a note stating what he did and the ban received.

What would you do if a player started to talk about the things he did to your mom last night? : If someone is willing to talk to someone in a position of power like that, they're obviously not going to follow the other rules either. A permaban, along with a message to explain themselves on the forums. We don't need people like that in the server.

Any additional information you'd like to add? Haven't been back to colonial marines for too long, but it has been quite a great time. Hope you guys consider me.

I find a few things to be a bit disturbing about this app.... If you can't remember what servers you have modded for and you didn't make it past the trial last time that should quickly raise some red flags. Dedication and investment is a large part of being on the staff team of any server.

Aside from this, many of the punishments are quite harsh. People do make honest mistakes and 24hr banning everyone who slips up isn't the best way to endear them to the server.

The response I have the largest issue with is the one regarding someone talking about your mother. Its the internet, people joke around, it honestly shouldn't matter enough to perma-ban someone just because harr harr ur mom.
That coupled with the fact you made a point of calling a modship a "position of power" it isn't, its a position of subservience or rather, it should be. Mods work for the playerbase not the other way around lording that over people is the fastest way to turn them away.

All valid reasons to be deterred, I can discuss a few.

Those small servers were servers composed of 6-7 people and lasted a week or two at most, and they also had generic names. I really have no clue what servers they were.
I didn't make it past trial that one time due to the entire staff base collapsing and the host at the time being useless. Thankfully it's been revived since then.

As said by the other staff members, punishment is taken very seriously here, and most of those scenarios are far from mistakes.

To each their own, I'm not applying for a moderator position for someone to send an admin help in and say "lel i fuk'd ur mum last night". If it was in ooc or something, then that's different.

Saying being a moderator doesn't grant any power is like saying a classroom teacher doesn't have any power over her students. Moderating is to keep something within a certain set of limits, and moderators are granted a certain amount of power at which to do so. I don't see how you can say a moderator doesn't have any power, that's just unreasonable.

Good answers, I will grant you that in the terms you discussed you are in fact correct. As for the last one it was more of a case of how you worded it but, you have described essentially the position of a mod well.

Changing to neutral, I still haven't seen you around and don't know about forum activity once I know you better I'll be able to give proper input.

The napalm answer is just.....really bad
The others are meh
Also the mom question "Someone in a position of POWER" no offence...but dont judge yourself so highly as a moderator, and it doesnt warrant a permaban if its a first offence
And you didnt solve the napalm question, bans dont put out fire or fix atmos
And.....you only have 3 posts on the forum, not active enough
And why didnt you make it past trial?
I am Crornel Jrones, grorious admin of Coronial Mahreens. U ar arr nast Trorr and will be ding dong bannu. U critizize Xenos? Ding dong Bannu. U no rike grorious adminnu? Ding dong Bannu. Hmm, you say you were a trial mod here a few months back, yet i've been here for close to two years and i don't know you... Hmm, this raises a small flag for me.
All of these answers did nothing for me, That napalm answer was particularly appalling, since you do nothing to actually fix the issue or prevent it from occurring again in the round.
Can't comment about time on the server, but that forum activity is sub par as well.

Overall, a -1 from me.

Same with Speedy on this one here.... I am probably one of the oldest staff here as well and I have never seen you and even if I have seen you I don't remember you... responses are vague and as Jones has also pointed out. Moderators really are not a position of power, They are there to help the server, Administrators have the positions of power and even than we are not really supposed to use it for anything involving A helps unless it involves investigation. We are here to help the server and make it more enjoyable for everyone. -1

-1.

Crude answers, didn't even entirely answer the napalm question, no one has seen you here before or remembers you. Overall, doesn't give a very good impression.

-1 from me. The responses to the problems are very, very harsh.

It seems like their answer to everything is "24 hour ban!" which is a bit over the top, considering that many of them are first offenses.
And the napalm answer didn't even address what he would do with the medic.
Also, a permaban for badmouthing your mother, on a first offense too?

This whole deal says "Power abuse" to me, honestly.
TLDR: Go back and read it. I spent time writing that, ya know.

Majority of your answers.... Are Bad. I can't explain it to you as others already did. I think you're best off researching solving your own problems... Also, I don't know you.

I was stupid tired when I said I'd go back to neutral... Follow your gut as they say, I'm reverting back to my -1 I think the reasons are clear enough by all the posts in this thread.

Honestly, failing the question part of any application should be almost impossible.

Just look at the other applications that have passed previously or are currently doing well with +1's

This is pretty much the most basic way to detect mindless individuals, blows my mind that people can even fail the question part so badly at times.
