Rob606 - Moderator Application

Colonial Marines Character: Rob 'Gristle' McThornbody

Age: 25

Gender: Male

Timezone: EST

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate? 10-20, varies. Some weeks I pour a lot of time into the game, other weeks I just casually play a round or two.

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)? I moderated and admin'd a forum for Urban Dead, the online text game. Army Control Corps was the name of the group I was in. Game's dead now but I did a lot of forum moderation as an applicable skill to here.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers? I did not, no.

What other servers do you play on? None at the moment.

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM? I used to play on GOON a lot, back in '12.

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before? As commander, got accepted.

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where? Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines? Nope.

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)? GOON, around '11-'12. I don't remember if it was a full 24 hours I just remember getting banned for toolboxing an assistant or something along those lines.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)? Yes, used to use it a lot when I worked with a certain studio.

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.

1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.
First off, watch to see if this is deliberate or just a misclick. If it was deliberate but no one is getting seriously hurt then the MPs need to deal with it. If no MPs are on or it's getting out of hand, sleep the individual and ask them what they are doing, and why. It could be a new player who doesn't understand the server and hasn't read the rules, or it could be someone who's intentionally griefing. Better to nip this in the bud if the player is actively trying to kill other players - Rule 7 would be being broken and thus a ban is needed.

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.
If it is a legitimate breach then I believe it should be left as is. Sulaco has anti-breach measures in the forms of shutters to control this sort of thing. The engineering team needs to plug this hole if they are able. If it is a breach that is causing serious atmos issues and was caused via grief or xeno meta then intervention might be necessary as it would break rule 12 - investigate and find the culprit, then ban them.

3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.
In character as the USCM, tell them that they need to pull themselves together and keep fighting - destroying the entire colony is a last stop measure and the marines still have enough fighting force to handle this operation.

4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.
This seems like intentional griefing, so a ban is necessary as it breaks rule 7. The marine is banned straight away. I would sleep the researcher and ask them what the hell they were thinking. A ban might be excessive for them as they didn't break any rules but were accessories to the griefing, intentional or otherwise. I'd check their notes if able and if this is a common seeming occurrence, they would also get a ban for rule 7. This act should definitely be noted on their account, if it was their first offence.

5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.
Check notes on player - if this is a common issue, warn them that continuing that line of dialogue runs them into rule 1 territory. Make a note of this regardless. Toxic behaviour is not pleasant to deal with, and these types of players need to be encouraged to reign that sort of crap in. Talking back in kind is never an option.

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.
Cite marine rule 2, and ask them to change it. Make reference to how this rule doesn't fit in with the naming rules - famous person name, meme name, etc

6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.
Tell them that with so many players some names slip through the cracks. They have to change it, no other way around it.

7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.
Utilise a voice in their head telling them that they remember they can't properly operate a rifle and that there are people that need their attention in medbay. If they continue, ping them and ask them why they are carrying a pulse rifle and why they are ignoring their duties - it's possible that this is a new player who doesn't know about the standards expected of them. If they are new, tell them to read the rules and report to the CO/XO for a job change. If they are an experienced player then I will ask them to drop the rifle, and get back to medbay and do their job. If this continues, I'll check their notes and see if this is a common occurrence - if it is, jobban. If not, make a note of this occasion. Experienced players should know better.

8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.
Doesn't matter, only doctors and the CMO can perform surgery. Tell them to stop it immediately.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?
I don't think it's the moderator's place to interfere with the game like this. If one is not careful, it can tip the balance too strongly to one side. It seems that the marines have the numbers advantage, however, so a USCM high command order to the commander might be enough to push them into making the first move. In the older days of CM a MOTHER scan might have given the marines the push they needed to stop turtling, but nowadays I'm not sure if moderators can force a MOTHER scan. In any case, suggestions to the marine command would be the push the round needed if interference was necessary.

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.
EORG is automatic 3 hours ban, I believe.

11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.
Not really an issue for staff. It's something the MPs need to deal with. It happens and it's annoying but it's not griefing and it's sort of roleplay with marines fucking with each other. If it was such a bad thing, soap wouldn't be in the game.

12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.
A punch to killing is not a justifiable escalation of force. I would cite this as rule 7 and say as much to them. In game the MPs would need to handle this, either perma brigging the player or the CO/acting CO executing the character. I would put a note on the player's account that they did this. If they are a repeat offender, ban them for grief.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

It's possible I might be overzealous in some of these answers; I've never done any admin work on SS13 so I'm seeing things and being honest about how I'd react to them. Regardless of my answers I'm sure I have a lot to learn from others on how to handle situations in general.

Your answers are decent, nothing that strikes me as bad and I think I remember you, and none of it is bad, +1.

Very nice answers. I've never seen you before though. Neutral for now. Might give a plus one if someone else who's seen you can clarify you as a player.

My main concern is what you've listed as your availablility. I know I'm basically the most kettley of kettles calling the pot black with this statement, but as a moderator, you need to be reliably active. This is double true for your trial phase, as inactivity will lead to you failing your trial. That is more of a warning/advice than anything.

I like your app, and I like the way you conduct yourself on the server. +1
I'm stressing way too hard about what to put here, so I'm just gonna leave it blank.... or....

That's a fair cop. What amount of time is expected from moderators?

Well I'd say around a day/ 2 days a week.

Because think of it like this, there is 168 hours in a week.

If we hire you and you moderate exactly 20 hours in ONE week, that means there is one slot on the mod team that isn't around for the other 148 hours.

On the other hand if you moderated 24-48 hours, assuming you do a max of 48 and no more, there is only 128 hours left. It is still a lot of time unsupervised, but other members spend more time on than others and just naturally stay on longer.
Reached "Leet" post status on 3/14/17.

Mkay, 24 hours isn't too much out of my range. That's equivalent to one average round per day, with a double round thrown in one day (assuming each round is on average about 3 hours long). Naturally this would fluctuate.

I've seen you in game a good amount. I like what I've seen, and any issues with your answers is something that I can address during your trial phase. Keep some stable hours and you're good to go. +1

Liked your answers, but I didn't see you in game a lot

Neutral for now
On May 17, 2016, a group of farmers dug up the diary of an ear of corn named Watson. Here are his entries.

Day 76:
They took Lawrence, dear god Lawrence... They ripped him off the stalk and smeared him in butter, just like Tyler and Jodie. They shipped him off to the popcorn factory...
I wonder what his wife will say.

Day 120: My brother says the VEGANS are protesting for more anti-meat bullshit. They want more of us to die. FUCKING HEATHENS.

Day 153: The ants are eating me from the inside out. They are popping out my kernels and taking them back to the nest. I feel them moving inside me. Julia says the pesticides will end our misery.

Day 300: Sweet Release. I can hear the planes flying over now. They are dropping the gas, it feels so good, sweet release-

Whilst this seems to be a sorted affair, I figured I should drop by.

Rob is pretty damned good, having turned my some of my early memories of this game into solid gems, I would love to see this guy on and about as he has always been a joy to speak with.

Short and sweet, character ref A-ok.

See ya soon buddy.
