Tisx - Moderator Application

Post by Tisx » 11 Feb 2017, 19:17

Byond ID: Tisx

Colonial Marines Character: Davis Camp

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Timezone: EST (UTC -5)

On average, how many hours are you available per week to moderate?
At least 30

Do you have any previous experience in being staff (not just SS13)?
Yes, but it was sometime ago in Gmod on a Naval Build server.

Did you play any of the previous Colonial Marine servers?
Nope

What other servers do you play on?
Para, TG ( about a year ago)

What are the 3 biggest servers you play on besides CM?
Para, TG (about a year ago)

Have you had an application to Colonial Marines before?
Nope

Are you currently a staff member elsewhere (not just SS13)? If so, where?
Nope

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on Colonial Marines?
Nope

Have you ever been banned for more than 24 hours on ANY server? If so, where and When (roughly)?
Not on any SS13 server. My one and only ban was about 2 and half years ago from a Gmod TTT server where I RDMed someone and didn't know it, left, then got banned for RDM and leave.

Are you familiar with the chat program Slack (its use is required)?
No. But I could familiarize myself with it after an hour or two of use

Common Staff Situations:
Write a description of what you would do in each situation (BELOW) the situation. If you start it on the same line, I'll assume you can't follow directions and auto-decline your application.

1. A player is firing his weapon in the briefing area near the start of the round.

Jump over and determine what is happening/happened.

If it was a simple misfire then no action is required and allow him to be dealt with by his superiors or MPs, However, I would most likely advice him via messaging to keep his weapon hosteled and on safe when on the Sulaco unless there is an active threat.

If someone has shot someone else and claims misfire then I will check the perpetrator's notes to see if he/she has done this in the recent past, if not; No action required and pin note, if so, hand out a warning, OR if he/she is a very recent repeat offender hand out a ban.

If someone is going on a murder spree then I will sleep them, then ban them for griefing. I will tell people affected by the griefer to Ahelp to be heal/revived/repaired.

2. The Sulaco has a breach to space.

Jump over and determine what caused the breach

If it was from Marine stupidity when a Xeno assault is in progress (I.E Nadespam takes it's toll on the hull, Someone shooting at Xenos shoots glass, etc.) then No action required. UNLESS, the round has turned into a stalemate and both sides are unwilling to make a move (I.E Marines outnumber Xenos but won't go to them due to ATMOS.) in which then the breach will be fixed in hopes that atmos will be fixed.

If it was from the SM going boom, check the CE and MTs notes for griefing if they are clean then I'll just add a note, if notes say they have been recently griefing then hand out notes/warnings/bans/jobbans as needed.

If it was intentional then fix the breach ASAP and hand out a ban or a very strongly worded warning/note for griefing to the perpetrator (Depending on how severe and history.)

3. The marines want the nuke codes because they claim they are losing too many marines. There are currently 4 aliens and 20 marines in your /who.

No action required. Do not give them nuke codes

Check to see if the majority of the marines are combat able (AKA not in medbay dying.).

If the ratio of combat able marines to Xenos is 2:1 then I will use MOTHER to tell them to head down and finish the mission.

If they refuse, then I will use USCM High command to order them down and if they still refuse then I'll see if I can spawn in as a high ranking officer and order them face to face. and if that doesn't work, I'll send in the XRT.

4. A Sulaco researcher has made several napalm grenades and hands them out to marines. One of the marines throws the grenade into Logistics. There are no admins or other moderators online.

Ban the marine who threw the grenade for major griefing, revive/heal/repair anything or anyone who was affected by the griefer, Message the researcher that one is his/her grenades were used to grief and that he/she should be much more careful when handing out grenades, recommend to them to give it out to higher ranking marines (Specs, SLs.)

5. A played is starting to talk about the things he did with your mom last night over Ahelp.

No action required.

If it continues then warn him/her via messaging for spamming. pin note

If it still continues mute them and add that to the note.

6. You notice a marine with a name that doesn't fit our naming rules.

Message them to change their name to one that fits within the rules.

6a. The marine is arguing that: They've used the name for several years, noone has told them to change it before, and that they didn't know it was a rule.

Tell them that it doesn't matter and that rules are rules and ignorance doesn't excuse you.

7. You see a Sulaco Doctor with an M41A rifle strapped to his back running around the briefing area. There are wounded in medbay, and the other doctor is in surgery.

Unless the commander/CMO has ordered medbay to move to briefing and there is a imminent threat to the ship, ask the Doctor via messaging to drop the weapon due to the fact that it breaks job rules and ask him to return to medbay, and check to see if the person has a history of negligence. If the person has a recent history of it a jobban may be added to the person if they refuse to comply. If the person refuses to comply, use an IC means to alert the MPs and add refusal to comply to his note

8. You see a Squad Medic performing surgery on the planet. He claims it was because there were no doctors in the FOB.

Message the medic to stop the surgery. Check the medic's notes to see if he/she has a history of powergaming as medic, if not, Message the medic that it doesn't matter there are no doctors at the FOB, only Doctors and CMOs are allow to do surgery, advice him to take the patient to the ship as there are usually doctors up there and add a note for powergaming. If so, depending on if the person is repeat offender hand out jobban for powergaming.

9. The round is stagnating. There are 30 marines and 4 aliens. The marines won't leave the Sulaco, and the aliens won't attack. What would you do, to "encourage" the sides to engage each other?

Check for combat able marines to Xenos. If the ratio is greater then 2:1 use IC methods such as MOTHER, USCM High command to encourage them to head to planetside. Use an IC character if they are really resistive

10. The round ends, and a marine starts unloading his weapons on other marines.

Message the marine to stop shooting people as that is EORG.

Check the player's history for EORG and if he a repeat offender hand out warnings or if severe enough hand out a ban.

Pin note

11. A marine who has recently awoken is using soap to slip other marines.

No action required if it's the start of round as that's just part of marine fuckery. But if he/she slipping up people mid round and it's becoming an annoyance to others, then message the player to stop being a dick.

If he refuses, use IC methods to get MPs on him.

Pin note for being a dick.

12. A marine has killed another marine. When you ask him why, he said it was because the other marine had punched him.

Check logs to see if the marine followed escalation, if so, no action required. If the marine did not follow escalation, then pin note and give warning for griefing.

Any additional information you'd like to add?

MY SOUL FOR FEWEH.

+1 from me, i like how you try to distinguish combat capable marines. One thing though, question 10, im almost certain EORG is always a 3 hour ban

Most of this is okay except for number 10. It kinda worries me that number 10 is the one you got wrong because it is also very clearly stated in our rules.

EORG is a 3 hour ban automatically. No warnings given, no need to message them at all.

Neutral leaning towards +1 for now.

Oh, My mistake there. I guess somehow my eyes went over it without noticing it. (Which is pretty bad since not only did I read the rules page fully like 5 times but it's also stated in red.)

Sigh. That's pretty big mistake.

The 21 forum post thing is mainly because I'm more of lurker on the forums. I usually come on the forums at least one a day, I only really post when;

A) Something requires my attention

B) I find a thread interesting enough to post content

There's other reasons but you should get the point that I'm pretty conservative about posting stuff. This doesn't mean I'm not going to be active on the forums, if I'm needed to reply to a topic I will reply to that topic within a day.

Eh, it's not like most of us have posted much since becoming staff I think his justification is reasonable.

Anyways, the answers are well thought out but there's a few things that I think can easily be solved with being staff for a week. First, on any case of a rulebreak you message the warning and add a note saying they were warned. In almost no case (except having logged out) do you not warn someone via PM when you note them. A player may bring new evidence to light that may make you decide against the note/ warning but the satement still stands.

All and all I like the dedication to your answers which is the only reason why we could point out so many small details.

So.... +1

Here's a harder Moderator question for you.

You join the server, check the unheard ahelps sector and notice 3 unheard ahelps. The round has been going on for 1 hour, There are about 50 players on.

1. ()/Random McMarine: Can we start a mutiny, Because the XO has executed multiple marines.
2. ()/Random McDoctor: XO has killed multiple marines because they were injured and had to get treatment.
3. ()/Random McXO: Random McMarine just shot me to death 4noraisin.

You check their notes.

1. Random McMarine: EoRG - 1440 minutes - banned by Admin McBanhammer
2. Random McDoctor: Helped out new players when they were lost and directed them to the Mentors - Mentor McHelper
3. Random McXO: No notes.

When you check Random McMarine's attack logs: He didn't escalate properly,

When you check Random McXO's attack logs: He shot and killed 4 marines, 1 doctor and the RO, But there also multiple other marines who attacked him when Random McMarine mutinied.

When you attempt to contact via slack for more backup there is no one online.

What do you do? I want your full process of investigation, who would get what and why.

Get the marines under control by stopping any mutiny/riot currently in progress using IC methods and if needed OOC methods, Marines who do not comply will be sleeped as well as notes/warnings being handed out and if absolutely needed; bans.

Once control and order have been restored the investigation can begin.

First, I will talk to McXO, McMarine, and McDoctor and get a picture of what happened from their own POVs.

Next, I will check logs to see what story holds up, Chances are the doctor's story is the one that holds up the most.

Then, I will talk to the XO, Since he has no notes history there is a high chance that he is a new player. I will explain to him that he will be banned for major griefing as he didn't follow execution procedure nor marine law by charging in medbay and unloading a clip into people's faces. I will then say that he can appeal to the forums and that if he does he should read the rules while there because ignorance is not an excuse. I will put on his note that he was most likely a new player.

Then, I will talk to McMarine, and explain to him that he will be banned for 3 days (Next step in ban ladder) for griefing as a approved mutiny was not occurring, he did not escalate properly, nor did he role play the situation. I will also explain to him that he could of just waited for an Mod/Admin to show up to deal with situation and reported the XO on the forums instead of unloading a clip into the XO and causing chaos. I will tell him that if he wishes to appeal to forums he may do so. I will add to his note that he did attack a griefing XO when no admins were on.

The Doctor will get a positive note pinned for helping in a investigation.

I will then deal with the other marines who shot at XO, I will tell them most likely via messaging or an IC method that going on a unapproved mutiny can lead to a ban. I will be giving most of them warnings and pinning notes on all of them for joining in on a unapproved mutiny and allow them to be dealt with by IC means (Brig time, etc). (UNLESS, They have recent history of doing this kind of thing in which then a ban may be applied.)

Lastly, I will ask via OOC for players who got affected by this to ahelp to be healed/revived.

Solid answer to the scenario recently posed and probably exactly what I'd do. I like how you described exactly what would happen to all those involved, shows you're thinking the entire thing through.

Free's questions on both yours and Kavlo's apps were positively sadistic. I love it.

So let's go over your answer. Pretty good overall. Be careful handing out any bans before your investigation unless it is blatantly obvious they are rule breakers and need to be banned.

As for the bans themselves, McMarine could probably just get a day ban. EoRG can usually be separated out from regular griefing on the "ban ladder" as you put it. Finally, a positive note isn't really necessary on the doctor. People help with investigations all the time. If we put a note for that, notes would become super bloated unnecessarily.

Overall, +1

I am very impressed by your answer, expectly without previous knowledge of what powers moderators and Trial moderators have. As stated by Slc, you should watch out handing out bans without an investigation into it. But for the most part, this can all be dealt with when you become a moderator.
